I don't get why so many people are against it, I mean I'm used to the male doctor as much as the next guy but from a lore standpoint he CAN regenerate into a woman (I do recall him saying that timelords can regenerate as either gender but they don't get to decide which it's going to be or something like that), it just hasn't happened aside from a comic relief episode. I'd be totally ok with it as long as it isn't done just for "social justice" purposes and doesn't feel forced, as long as it's played well I'd be fine with it.
Except The Doctor is a man who has had children and grandchildren with humans. We have seen male and female timelords, and they have been referred to as men and women. The only timelord we've seen change gender/sex is The Master, and the time before that he was body-jacking people so we don't even know if he regenerated into she or if it's just body snatching. Also this recent trend of people calling for male characters to be changed into female characters is fucking bullshit. It's all agenda pushing, if you want a good female character write a fucking female character, don't be a lazy hack. People would flip their shit if a female character was turned into a man.
http://tardis.wikia.com/wiki/The_Corsair
Here's what I think; and I apologize if the exact same point of view has been explained in the same terms prior to my post. My first reaction was that a female Doctor would be ridiculous, and I was against the idea. But then I thought about it... Anyway, characters like James Bond can never be made female because the character or role is written to be a bit of a power fantasy for males, the whole dream of being a spy, bedding exotic and beautiful women, and fighting under the radar. The Doctor, however, is different. He surrounds himself with companions but is ultimately alone. He is confident, competent, and cannot be bullied or bought. He is, in short, the archetype of a heroic leader, and is a character everyone looks to when there's no hope left. The Doctor always finds a way. sexuality or sexualization was never a necessary part of his character, even if he is lonely and characters often feel an attraction to him. Why can a woman not play this role just as well? I think back to a movie I watched when I was a child, a really old Disney family film, Mary Poppins. If any of you have watched that movie, you know exactly what I'm talking about already, notwithstanding all the singing and dancing that characterized Disney movies in that age. She was very much a Doctor Who type of figure. Strong, possessing of mysterious powers, composed in all situations, even under heavy stress, and ultimately someone that everyone else looked to to save them or give them hope. If there's a female actor who can play these qualities, and play them well, I think I'd be very happy to see a female Doctor one day.
http://tardis.wikia.com/wiki/The_Corsair
off shoot referenced introduced by new series that gives more fuel to gender pushing over good writing. It was a fun moment, but people take it to far and want fan fic to be cannon. Shit give Romana a spin-off and allow people with a healthy mindset model a hero figure that's not the doctor. I find inspiration and idols in either side of the gender spectrum, but I don't go out of my way to change their gender to fit my lifestyle.
Ya'll need to grow the fuck up It's like most of the people who post in sensationalist headlines are scared of women
I actually came up with some way to explain how all previous incarnations of the Doctor have been British white dudes despite Gallifreyans theoretically being able to regenerate into any form. It's already well established that there's a telepathic link between the Doctor and his TARDIS, and that the TARDIS has a bunch of tech in it that maintains the Doctor's vitals, as well as shit like autotranslations and what not. I figure, one of these chips is a sort of regeneration constraint enforcer, to prevent anyone he happens to be travelling with from being stunned that the guy who kinda looked like someone's grandpa suddenly transformed into something that looks more like the Master from Fallout. So how do you introduce a black person, or a woman, or even a black woman as the Doctor? Easy. If memory serves, the Doctor's TARDIS was a really old model when he first got it, so it would make sense for certain components to start going bad. And if the regeneration constraint chip was starting to fritz out, it makes sense that it would only start out by loosening the constraints instead of just outright failure (especially given how infrequently that chip is used anyway).
Ya'll need to grow the fuck up It's like most of the people who post in sensationalist headlines are scared of women
Go back to through history on discussions during the old series. People complained way louder about the seventh doctor's change from the sixth, McCoy got shit told to his face. And people agreeing with him are scared of women? Maybe it's two sides can grow up, but definitely the people with a stronger stance for a female doctor in your own word "need to grow the fuck up". You could say because of his new regeneration cycle borrowed from other time lords, he got some regeneration from different sexes. And if you had to pick a 'black' doctor doesn't mater if it had to be pushed, the only person I find who could take the role is Idris Elba. Though he may have turned that down http://screencrush.com/doctor-who-casting-black-doctor-idris-elba/ tid bit there on a female doctor, coming from neil gaiman, the person who introduced the gender regeneration swapping to the series.
I haven't watched Doctor Who in a while now, but while I was watching it, after I found out that Time Lords could switch sex, I thought it would honestly be cool if the Doctor had a woman incarnation. I think it would be a nice mix-up to "male model doctor travels with female companion" thing they've been doing. The addition of an older looking Doctor I thought was a nice change after all the hotties we'd been seeing the entire series run, and I think a female Doctor could be executed very well. It's honestly one of the only bits of media that can completely get away with it and do the gender switch well. It'd be more interesting to me than seeing a fuckin' Ginger doctor like he wants so bad. I'd also like to see the Doctor cart around a male companion for once. Not like Rory or Mickey who were like, companion's companions, no, I want him to have a dude chill with him for a while. Or a guy who's not from the modern day. The guy from the 1800s who thought he was the Doctor would have been a GREAT companion, I had thought. I just think that the series as I had seen it so far could do with some big shake-ups to the formula.

I also don't hold his Sherlock series in high regard either, so I know it's not just "waah some loser is ruining my show!"

The pacing and amount of plot progression in the old was different because you had story arc which were told in several (mostly) half hour chunks. Instead of 11 episodes a season you had a butt load until about the third doctor to over 20 episodes a season until the sixth. Also if you want to see a guy who was chill with the doctor and not from modern times. His name was Jamie. Adric was also another, but he was an alien from E space. Seriously, there was content for 'everyone'. Things fell off around the fifth doctor in quality (yes there were bubble wrap monsters before then), but it went places mixing up the formula in some areas incredibly well because it had good writing.

People who monitor behind the scenes leaks and spoiler forums will know Charles Dance was cast as The Master and Michelle Gomez was playing somebody else. Gomez had to drop out of her role, round the same time Dance dropped from his so she was asked if she wanted to do The Master instead. It was just that a good actor was available. Not LET'S PUSH THE AGENDA. I imagine if a female Doctor is ever cast it will be because a good actor was available. Just like Capaldi was chosen for his talent not for an AGE AGENDA or SCOTTISH ITALIAN AGENDA Series 6 The Doctor mentioned a Timelord that changed genders. When The Doctor regenerated he checked to see if he was a girl. In the novelisations it's often mentioned how timelords gender swap, most recently in the War Doctor novel. Think it's in the recent Shada novel too. People have been asking for a female Doctor since the 80's. It's not some new agenda. A character that can change height, body and age can surely change genitals. Who's to say The Master or the Corsair didn't have children?
He regenerates into a woman in a Comic Relief episode. Other than that, no.
This is the best Dr Who episode I've ever seen. And the only one I've ever watched till the end.
