Teenager’s Jailing Brings a Call to Fix Sex Offender Registries

The Louis Theroux documentary on sex offenders really opened my eyes to how bullshit that register is. While a lot of the people on it have done horrible things others made a simple mistake and are lumped in with the rest. Communities do things like open up parks and schools in areas they know offenders live in order to force them to leave. It's extremely unfair to even those who committed the worst crimes, who already did their time in prison.
There's definitely an issue with the sex offender registry in that you can be placed on it for pissing in public because you're technically exposing yourself.
Tell us when was the last time you heard of someone going on the sex offender list because he peed in the bushes.
This never happens.
It should be illegal to trick someone into having sex with you under false pretenses, especially if you are knowingly causing them to break the law without their knowledge.

Then statutory rape crimes will rise 1000%.
Suddenly, this woman who was defending her exploiter, will no longer see it fit to cover his ass and undermine his credibility significantly by exaggerating what happened to save herself.
I don't think the people who are defending him on Facepunch want that.
Indiana doesn't have romeo and Juliet laws??? These are what those laws are specifically designed for
Age based rape (via "age of consent" laws) is bullshit.
There are 19 year old girls that look like they're 13 (and have the mindset of a 13 year old), and there are 13 year old girls that look like they're 19 (and have the mindset of a 19 year old). If neither person took advantage of the other person (i.e. it was totally consensual), then let it be.
Teens are horny. They're gonna have sex. Why ruin their lives because of it?
This has happen to me before, although I actually never met up with them, but I've seen a lot of kids get on those apps and lie about their age. One time I had some kid get on Tinder and claim they were 18, but they were actually 15. But see the thing is I don't get on those apps for sex anyways, so if you're critical you can usually pull out the bullshit. When you're horny I think sometimes you have a hard time seeing through the bullshit.

This happened at a mall I used to work at but for something even more minor. Some guy was changing in his car for work, he was a waiter at P.F. Changs, and he got arrested and put on the sex offenders list for public exposure for changing in his own car on the far end of the parking lot.

Their crime will not persist into adulthood and by all means it is a productive punishment geared toward prevention of something that has probably persisted since we were nomadic hunters.
I was always concerned this was going to happen so I literally carded women and yeah, it may have been awkward, but I at least could proceed knowing it was safer than it had been ten seconds earlier.

Do you have the source to the full story?
I have a friend who was caught drunkenly pissing in the bushes while the sun was still up at California. The cops did not do anything other than to scold him.
Do you have the source to the full story?
I heard it from my boss at the time, who got told from the guy himself.
It is entirely irrelevant because like the majority of anecdotal stories, it is untrue and key details are left out. This is why we always hear of these brazen 'injustices' via hearsay only. The person on the side of story never seems to be guilty.

Here's a chart from Slate about where you can be put on the Sex Offender's registry for Public Urination

As well as this article from Buisness Insider states
At least 13 states require sex offender registration for public urination, according to Human Rights Watch's comprehensive review of sex offender laws in 2007. Two of those states specify that the urination must happen in front of a minor.
Wow, I always thought people were fucking with me when they said you can become a registered sex offender for peeing in public. What the fuck is wrong with this country.
she didn't say she was raped
she didn't lie to a court
she had sex with another teenager
it isn't like she wanted his life ruined, and she couldn't have anticipated the judicial unit being so stupid either
She lied about her age. She straight-out knew what she wanted was illegal.
I honestly would just leave the country and find one that doesn't have a broken justice system.

I don't get it, you're disproving the other guy's story because they are anecdotal but just a few minutes before you gave an anecdotal story to support your point.
I believe most reasonable cops won't go after guys pissing on the bushes, but is it that unreasonable to think that it might have happened, considering the law?
I had sex with my girlfriend when I was an adult and she was 16, thank fuck I didn't live in the US.
I'd probably kill myself if I'd be forced in to the sex offender registry.

have fun searching forever, all countries' justice systems are broken in one way or the other esp as long as money talks, among other problems
I was lied to in a similar situation.
That shit is legit terrifying and horrible.

All states set their own Age of Consent; here in Connecticut it's 16 unless you're like a teacher or hold power over that individual in that sort of way. None are as low as 14 though; 16 is the lowest iirc.

Reading this article reminded me so much of someone I used to know; she had lost her virginity (consensual from both parties) at the age of thirteen with her boyfriend at the time.... Who was in his early 20's. :v:
I hope the girl is proud of herself. Hopefully she learned something.
She better have, considering she ruined someone's life.

Here is an idea. When you turn 18, you get a legally required tattoo on your forehead as proof..............

This is not really a black and white "kids should ID or you are boned" kinda thing.
You cannot expect every non-adult to be this careful, kids undergo biological changes, both affecting mind and body, expecting that everyone of them has the full responsibility and ability to comprehend the consequences that might occur is ridiculous, which is the entire point of them not being adults yet.
And to way-out-of-proportion laws and punishments the US has on this, doesn't make this any better.
I will not even go into the whole Fake-ID/No-ID possibility, that complicates things even more.
[editline]when[/editline]
Oh god, I just realized, "kids should ID or you are boned", that pun was not intended.
He should be taken off the list since that girl lied about her age. On second thought is that even possible assuming they have records of the conversations between the two? I'm guessing when they chatted they asked how old each other was so there should be a record of that that the police can get.

Depends on where they had this conversation
If it's in person or over a standard phone call, they can't pull up any recordings they might have without it being illegal search and seizure. If they did it over the dating app or over some other standard messenger platform (e.g. Facebook), he could just pull the conversation up on his phone (assuming he hadn't deleted it) and show someone at the station and it'd be no problem
I find the idea of the registered sex offender list is ridiculous. I get that there are some monsters out there who probably deserve to be on the the list, but why not deal with them another way? The whole concept of it just seems archaic and mean-spirited, especially when you hear all these stories about why people are on there for bullshit reasons.
But NOOOOOOPE. Got to keep people feeling safe and secure; obviously worth the price of a few people being socially ostracized forever for a mistake they made.
Who is the victim? Who is pressing charges?
If the answer to both is "no one" then the answer to "Who is getting punished?" should also be "no one".
