Geez people. What sort of education are some of receiving in some parts of America. It was one of the worst things America has done and it's not like the education system is trying to hide it. Not in California at least where it's brought up a bunch of times.

Plus, everything between 1783 and 1860 is about why the war between the states inevitably erupted. [editline]30th March 2013[/editline] The most Amerindians are mentioned in US history is during Columbus's time, then fast forward to the 1880s when we put them on reservations in the midwest (save a quick mention about the French & Indian War/Seven Year's War on the way).
Man, how irresponsible of him to say something like that #MadresDeLaPlazaDeMayo
Too soon. Too soon.

We went over everything like the Trail of Tears multiple times.

If the Trail of Tears was mentioned, it was so brief I don't even recall. It was brief enough for me to know it was there and what it was generally about, but beyond that nothing.

My middle/high school was five miles from the Kickapoo reservation in Kansas, so Trail Of Tears was covered pretty extensively.
if he didn't mean anything by it then why did he mention a direct event of genocide in American History?
Certain phrases aren't inextricably bound to events in time, you know. Perhaps he was referring to a trail of tears left by ISU leaving the competition after being narrowly beaten by Ohio? Really, how much sense would it make to intentionally mention a nearly two hundred year old tragedy when talking about basketball? [editline]asda[/editline]
The "tears" I was referring to were the tears of Cyclone fans. I have removed the tweet & apologize to anyone who was offended.
I only learned about the Trail of Tears due to Cards Against Humanity, but I'm also not American. I seriously doubt this guy was taking about that, though, because not everyone knows about it.
Pretty dumb thing to say. If he wasn't an elected official I might let him go just for being ignorant but you should really probably be smarter about these kinds of things.

We talk extensively about how interference in other nations (such as Latin America) has lead to economic dependence and general instability. I would hardly say my class glorifies America.
I find his tweet to be offensive, Anne Frankly all genocide jokes are in bad taste.
the world is a wonderful world full of fascinating people just waiting to be offended

And I've never had a class that called the Civil War "the war between the states" Are you from the south or something?
I am from New Jersey.
Have to work during tonight's Walking Dead #holocaust #sandyhook #aids
Why would anyone be offended, it has nothing to do with the historical event anyway. He wasn't making light of the actual "Trail of Tears", it was obviously unintentional. If I was him I would not have apologized. gosh darn screw you silly liberals and your prejudiced agendas to persecute me for expressing my views! #DachauBlues
Even though history classes do talk about American genocides, schools try to avoid talking about them as much as possible. I grew up in Jersey too, and I think we only had one section on Indian genocide. The curriculum's focus was more on talking about the Gilded Age than how Americans took away Indian body parts and used them as fashion souvenirs during systematic genocides. Genocide chapters usually get shoved to the side - either as summer reading, a spare section in a chapter about Manifest Destiny, etc - and rarely receive they focus they properly deserve. That said, my school DID also hold a class about genocides throughout history. And I imagine they touched on American genocides, as well as many that aren't particularly studied in world history classes. But, even then, public schools don't give the proper credit to American history that a (respectable) college would.
The Civil War is called "The War of Northern Agression" in the south.
Best ironic title for a war ever.

Even if he were unaware of the Trail of Tears, he's a politician and should have been aware of it. 4. I'd be fine if this were a comedian or a celebrity, but this guy is an elected official.
The Civil War is called "The War of Northern Agression" in the south.
Just so everyone is clear, no one actually calls it this.
Best ironic title for a war ever.
it's technically historically accurate depending on your interpretation of early events. it was the union occupying csa territory that caused the csa to attack. the union was obviously wanting to fight against the csa. but that's a major digression and largely irrelevant to the major issues of the civil war.
