fuckin gross dude. do people have to wear a gasmask when you talk to them to avoid dying from the stench??
Looks like all of Facepunch is covered then.
Most people don't eat tooth paste.
You don't have to eat something for your body to absorb it smarty pants. We're talking about something we take into our mouth twice a day for several minutes at a time.
After reading over the article, I must say some of those chemicals I just can't say.
My family started to filter all of the tap water fearing this kind of thing.
I got a cavity a week later.
I once ate a donut and week later I had a heart attack and died.
General Ripper was right, after all!
I told you guys about this in another thread having to do with San Francisco water bottles, but you didn't listen and you all rated me boxes. Fluoride is being put in the water to dumb down the population, and it's happening only in the United States and not anywhere else in the world like Europe.
Even if you don't believe that fluoride is harmful to humans, you must also realize that it's forced medication. If people don't want fluoridated water they should have a choice, but in most places municipal water companies just put it in the water anyway without asking the population about it first. Also all of that fluoride is being dumped into lakes and oceans seeing as a lot of water isn't consumed.
Please petition your county representatives to take fluoride out of the water supply, thanks.
But there's no link between fluoridated water and developmental disorders.
But there are studies that link fluoride exposure to IQ and they were conducted in China and Iran and imply that fluoride decreases IQ in children.
Drinking pure H2O is not very good for you for long periods of time as its missing a ton of natural minerals.
I had some Computer Science majors who were talking about how their were chemicals in the water that would stagnate births and cause issues.
I just sat their and realized that Engineers really shouldn't talk about things they don't even study.
What... the US actually does add fluoride to their watersupply?!
You're kidding me right?
The government tried that here in the Netherlands and that shit got overturned in court pretty quickly.
More and more, piece by piece, it's getting shown to even to Americans that "The land of the ultimate freedom" is just a marketing slogan for the USA.
Europe has so much more freedom.
Yeah we can't own guns without being a member of a shootingrange, but that's about it.

I don't really know that fluoride is a matter of freedom; even if it were, the risks are clearly negligible and the benefits tangible.
how...fluoride has been in the water for 50+ years and the U.S. isn't populated by idiots...
sure fluoride in massive amounts is probably bad for you but thats true with about every chemical. fluoride in the water is in such a low concentration it barely beats out the iron from the pipes and the sedements in the pipes, and there is very strong evidence in favor of the dental benefits, fluoride replaces calcium in enamel and is actually stronger.
there just isn't any indicative data, just coincidental data

there's just too many anti-goverment nuts out there that are willing to "prove" public health works are really a secret goverment conspiracy
did you know there's a goverment innoculation conspiracy? in schools the goverment pumps mesles and mumps into the air supply to force you to inject your kids with their autism inducing vaccines!
i can prove this because places where the parents have fought the goverment have had higher cases of mesels and mumps and whooping caugh and outbreaks of everything in general.
see?

Well it certainly wouldn't surprise me if there was something in the water you've been drinking.
Can someoneactually actually post facts as to the typical amount amount of fluoride in tap water rather than just saying it's harmless?

Probably lead since we have old pipes.

Fluoride is in all the most popular brands of toothpaste for fucks sake, the whole movement against fluoride in water supplies is rediculously stupid, keeping in mind that water companies don't take shortcuts and provide a constant safe concentration.
Metals diluting the water in old pipes is probably more of a worry than fluoride tbh
Opportunities for epidemiological studies depend on the existence of comparable population groups exposed to different levels of fluoride from drinking water. Such circumstances are difficult to find in many industrialized countries, because fluoride concentrations in community water are usually no higher than 1 mg/L, even when fluoride is added to water supplies as a public health measure to reduce tooth decay. Multiple epidemiological studies of developmental fluoride neurotoxicity were conducted in China because of the high fluoride concentrations that are substantially above 1 mg/L in well water in many rural communities, although microbiologically safe water has been accessible to many rural households as a result of the recent 5-year plan (2001–2005) by the Chinese government. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Water_fluoridation
Water fluoridation is the controlled addition of fluoride to a public water supply to reduce tooth decay. Fluoridated water has fluoride at a level that is effective for preventing cavities; this can occur naturally or by adding fluoride.[2] Fluoridated water operates on tooth surfaces: in the mouth it creates low levels of fluoride in saliva, which reduces the rate at which tooth enamel demineralizes and increases the rate at which it remineralizes in the early stages of cavities.[3] Typically a fluoridated compound is added to drinking water, a process that in the U.S. costs an average of about $1.02 per person-year.[2][4] Defluoridation is needed when the naturally occurring fluoride level exceeds recommended limits.[5] A 1994 World Health Organization expert committee suggested a level of fluoride from 0.5 to 1.0 mg/L (milligrams per litre), depending on climate.

In 1994 a World Health Organization expert committee on fluoride use stated that 1.0 mg/L should be an absolute upper bound, even in cold climates, and that 0.5 mg/L may be an appropriate lower limit.[6] A 2007 Australian systematic review recommended a range from 0.6 to 1.1 mg/L.[10] In 2011, the U.S. lowered its recommended level of fluoride to 0.7 mg/L.[38]

Groundwater is the most appropriate and widely used source of drinking water for manyrural communities in Sub-Saharan Africa. Studies reveal that in some of the boreholes,F− concentration may be way beyond the recommended limits for drinking water. This study evaluates the use of raw unprocessed bentonite clay and its Fe3+ modified form for fluoride adsorption. A series of batch adsorption experiments were carried out to evaluate parameters that influence the adsorption process.
Defluoridation is considered an essential process to make ground water safe to drink, and too much fluoride being present in naturally occurring ground water is an actual problem is countries where they do not have sufficient water treatment infrastructure.
Conclusion:
Fluoride in at the levels recommended by the US and by the WHO do not cause adverse effects on people.
All studies linking fluoride consumption to adverse health effects physical or mental occur in situations were people consumed water with fluoride concentrations high above the recommended safe maximum because they did not have access to properly treated water.
The United States has a very good water treatment infrastructure - tap water is considered safe to drink, and if the tap water were to contain more fluoride than the US recommended maximum of 0.7 mg/L, it wouldn't be considered safe to drink. That is to say that the US will defluoridize water with excessive fluoride levels.
Drinking municipal tap water in the US means you will never be exposed to dangerous levels of fluoride. There are no studies supporting any health effects from drinking fluoride treated water at the levels present in tap water.
Tap water does not pose a danger to your health.
All it takes is reading this thread and approximate 5 minutes of googling to not be a fucking idiot and take your tin foil hat of.
The health benefits of fluoride at recommended levels are proven and the adverse effects have zero supporting evidence. Pushing to have fluoridation removed from your water is on the same level of backwards bullshit as trying to argue creationism over evolution - there are mounds of evidence supporting one side of the argument, and zero supporting the other. It's really quite simple.
"A meta-analysis of 27 cross-sectional studies of children exposed to fluoride in drinking water, mainly from China, suggests an average IQ decrement of about seven points in children exposed to raised fluoride concentrations."
Oh, it's referencing the studies of, among others, Chinese children exposed to hundreds of times more fluoride than is ever added to drinking water, owing to geological contaminants in those areas. This is that study this one refers to, for those curious (which itself is also a review compilation of information gathered from multiple other studies.

I remember when the referenced article was posted here as well. It's interesting how some scientific studies resemble a human centipede of information.
Also for some odd reason, the original pdf from the Lancet is 4mb smaller than the one posted on this page. Probably worth sticking to the original

When this was posted to /r/conspiracy I mentioned that and got called a shill. You are correct though, this article says nothing about the dangers of artificial water fluoridation in public drinking water. Conspiracy theorists are running wild with the headline but ignoring what the study actually says.
100 percent of people who get cancer breathe oxygen, therefore oxygen causes cancer. :downs:
... no... READ IT
I'm not mocking the article i'm mocking the conspiracy theorists that we've been talking about for two pages.
When I get a chance I'm going to have to read this.
Fluoride though is the most non descript thing ever though, it's just an anion, whats it attached too? I mean Sodium is highly explosive in water and Chlorine is deadly, but together they make every day table salt.
So what is it about fluoride in particular that causes people to go crazy over it? My grandmother is dead set against it since she thinks even minute amounts can outright kill you.
Edit: Also what is it with people being against brushing their teeth? christ just do it.
The effects on Flouride on the brain is negated by selenium. You can have all the effects of pure water not damaging your brain and all the dental benefits of flourides just by eating 1 or 2 brazil nuts a day.

Don't forget to drink 2 liters of water everyday, brush your teeth twice a day and use mouthwash.
I'll play fate, I haven't brushed my teeth for 10 years, and have been a chronic soda drinker since before that, no cavities. On the other hand my sister, whom brushes every night and never drinks soda has a LOT.
Being an outlier is fun.
Have you actually been to a dentist who said "No cavities" or are you just saying it because you don't feel constant pain etc? Because in order for cavities to hurt, they need to be exposed, and yours aren't if you don't brush or anything.
Also I once stopped brushing for 5 days (week long work-trip, it was literally work-sleep-work-sleep for 5 days) and I felt so disgusting I pretty much power-washed my teeth.

Par for the course, really. Happens with any scientific study that even remotely hints at their preconceptions being possibly right; this thread is living proof.

Hi Tengil
Can I just point out that I, like a large number of users on Facepunch, would have discarded the premise and results of this news/post if the title had have read:
Study Links Fluoride Along With 10 Other Chemicals To Neurodevelopmental Disorders
Instead of:
Harvard Study Links Fluoride Along With 10 Other Chemicals To Neurodevelopmental Disorders
Which I am ashamed to admit.. but, in the endeavour for intellectual honesty, I needed to make it known.
Simply because so many fake, and false-science studies have been conducted with a clear bias to slur some of these chemicals.. I just wouldn't have believed any-old study.
But, The Lancet is a really fucking reputable journal.. so, I'm sure it's going to turn some heads, and the dental industry will be in shit further than any cavity they can fill.
That why I always drink bottled water.
