That's really what he wanted, wasn't it? I think four and a half years is too long. Sounds like they were intentionally just being straight up assholes and he couldn't handle it anymore. Mental abuse can be just as bad as physical.
While I can fully understand where he came from, after all my high school years were full of the same exact horseshit, it doesn't excuse stabbing a bitch so hard he broke his knife off in her face. That's lethal force, and should only be used if the aggressor is also using lethal force. If they're just being assholes a fist to the face is suitable.
I get that he did a horrible thing but he still didn't instigate it.
He still did it and he should still face a penalty for it. I think 4 and a half is fairly reasonable, if on the harsh side, for attempted manslaughter.
and the fact he snapped just because someone called him Harry Potter, that's one incredibly short fuse.
I've got a legendarily short fuse and I've never resorted to stabbing a bitch.
i can sympathize with this guy, i used to have huge anger issues in high school and when you've been picked on for who knows long you can easily misinterpret something or snap at something you wouldn't have otherwise
still, he's fucked himself over by acting out so violently. i just feel really sorry for him, so many things could've been done to prevent the bullying or him acting out and nothing did.
oops i forgot to make a statement about how dumb it is to snap at a single statement (despite the 4 years of shit this guy went through before then) or a bad harry potter joke

You can't compare your experience to his because both of your circumstances were most likely very different.
You guys are disturbingly upbeat about the damage this guy did to those girls. Yeah, bullying is bad, but it in no way justifies the use of such violence.
It's not that what he did was justified, more that it was understandable. People can't take unlimited abuse and will react in different ways. Some commit suicide, some lash out, some luckily manage to deal with it, depends on the person.
Is it just me or does he kind of look like that one youtuber Markiplier?
he pleaded guilty, handed himself in to police and made a full confession
judicial courts have to take into account circumstances like above as well as the fact he likely was bullied for the majority of his life
And they followed him, continuing to harass him. Had the damage not been so severe, he could have walked entirely. If you intentionally incite a fight, you are often considered to be responsible. (obviously depending on the Jurisdiction. I don't know about where he is)
the guy telling me this is the guy who fails every class, doesn't respect anyone/thing, and is going to amount to nothing, so i'm not phased at all.
Congrats, you've thwarted the Romulans.
Don't fuk with eminem
Girls bully guy.
90% of Facepunch can relate.

You mean snow?
Kind of ironic he gave her a facial scar.
Kids used to call me Adolf when I was in elementary school, because I was the German foreign kid with the accent, and all I did was gas a few of them - this guy took it way too far.
i got called harry potter the other day, just because my hair looks like his

I was tempted to tell him "if i was harry potter i would have cast a spell to silence you a while ago", but giving the kid attention is the worst thing you can do.
i guarantee if you said that to anyone they would have cast a broken nose on you

Whats your point?
My name is Kane Lynch. I get a LOT of shit for my name, especially after the game came out. I get where this kid is coming from 100%. The face stabbing is a bit far (worst i've done is gave my cousin a black eye) but I definitely understand the reaction. Saying "he's a dangerous man" is just plain stupid. He was a kid who was pushed to his wits end.
Girls bully guy.

He got called Harry potter once and lost it? Oh boy, he would not have liked to have been me.
Imagine the scene, you're a young, 11 to 12 year old boy, when the Harry potter books first come out, you have dark bround hair, styled much like the titular character of the series, you have round glasses, and you have a forehead scar.
Yes, that was me around 1997, when the books first came out, I got the piss taken out of me SO badly for a couple of years, then it died down until I was in college and then the films got released, and so I got the piss taken out of me then, albeit in a more good humoured way. Hell, the chefs in the kitchen I used to work in steadfastedly refused to call me anything other than Harry, it got to the point where I got so used to it, I automatically responded to that name and after I left, it took me a while to get back to recognising my own name.
Ok, I get that this kid was bullied and pushed over the edge. I get that he probably has had a tough life. And I get that these girls were acting like like shits.
What these girls did was bad, very bad, but that doesn't justify this kid's actions. What he did was a really damn awful act of violence in a fit of rage. I don't know if I'd say he's dangerous, though. I've done some pretty terrible shit, too, but I eventually came to realise that I was a piece of absolute scum back then.
In other words, I feel bad for all of them

From what I gathered from the article, he's been bullied in school for a long time because of it. You'd have to be completely unhinged to lose it after just once, lol.
Holy shit those girls better get the chair for what they did. Criminals.

The irony is, if he'd have committed suicide the instigators would have likely gotten off scott free. Not that I'm saying he's right in what he did, there's a difference between turning round and smacking someone who was bullying you, because you'd had enough, and the extent that he went to.

People like you are why the vicious cycle of bullying continues. If you don't think that bullying is a serious problem, think again. Yes, they may have been the last and final act that made him snap, but grains of sand can sink a ship, if you have enough of them, but they're all as responsible as the next for doing it.

If you said that around here your face would be smashed in..
That is literally asking for pain.
He deserved the 4 years ofc.
But after the comments from the mother I can't handle it anymore.
Isn't there a law against bullying in the UK?
This didn't happen just because of this one incident...
Pfft I look identical, and I have perscription glasses, and a large scar on my forehead in the exact same place that I've had since I was one, that was probably my #1 nickname in school for over 10 years, and if that's not bad enough my name also rhythms with dick.
Fuck this kid he had it easy

In my experience at least, bullies only got "punished" by a telling off if they got caught in the act by the teacher, which was, as you can imagine, largely ineffectual. Sometimes you just have to turn round and smack your bullies in the face, though, as I said, what he did went way beyond that. Hell, I turned round once and smacked the guy that was bullying me, I got punished for it, but oddly enough the guy later ended up being a decent friend because of it. But female bullies can be some of the worst, they just seem to have a way of getting right into your vulnerable spots and hitting you right where it hurts.
When I was 15 I got bullied a lot in high school because I resembled Harry Potter. One time I actually threw a handful of twisted staples in a kid's face who had been sitting behind me in class and whispering it to me repeatedly for about a week straight. He nearly got blinded.
Sure is a lot of 'i was bullied for x and dealt with it, therefore he's a pussy who can't take shit' up in this thread.

Here I think that qualifies in some way.
Sure, everyone's different, but life is going to have a hell of a lot of fuckbags, and it's just going to get worse if you try to fight it.
It really sucks, but since it's pretty much everywhere, I'd say to just deal with it and ignore it. The bullies will then move on to a weaker target. Dunno if that's the kind of encouragement these kids need, though.
I have a friend who has quite a resembles to Harry Potter, and he gets called it quite a bit by folk. Worried he may snap now.

Because it's that simple right
