• LA CBS news crew attacked by Trayvon Martin protestors

99.99% of those people there probably aren't even really protesting anything they just want to fuck things up because they're mad for no reason.
I'm gonna play devil's advocate here and say that those posters weren't saying that they were like apes because of their skin color, but rather that they were like apes due to their behavior. Seems trivial, but it's an important distinction.
Personally, that's why I called them that in my head. I feel bad for thinking so because majority of the rioters appear to be black, but they keep acting like apes by climbing on cars, swarming people, and breaking fences.
99.99% of those people there probably aren't even really protesting anything they just want to fuck things up because they're mad for no reason.
They aren't mad. That's just their character, the way they really are. Give them an excuse and their true colors show. That's the so called 'culture' (Community) that Jeantel was talking about during the trial. Hood Rats are the worst type of people. It's rare that someone in that position goes this is shit, I want out, and actually rises above and breaks out of it. You don't have to be black to be a hood rat, either, FYI
Really? People are just now starting to realize this? This is what happens with every large riot in the history of ever. The whole purpose of the movement (which this movement had no purpose in the beginning anyways) gets hijacked by some group of idiots who just use it as an excuse to beat the shit out of random people for no reason, loot stores, etc.. and possibly get away with it. It's fucking sad when even more people join in just because they see others doing it. Like they're too fucking stupid to be able to think for themselves. I know a small part can't represent the whole; but we have all of this racism and negative stereotypes and people constantly wonder why... Maybe if everyone did their part to help keep these idiots in check and prevent new ones from popping into existence we would finally get rid of these problems.
people who want to go around stealing and beating the shit out of people will probably do so without an excuse. these riots happen because they are releasing a lot of stored tension and frustration at a racist society at large. a lot of people go through the day just dealing with the fact the system is fucking them over, and don't cause a scene. then things like the trayvon martin case end up opening up the debate over race in america, and people begin to see an outlet for their frustration, whether it's through protesting or wrecking shit. that's why riots over political issues happen in general. people are sick of putting up with shit and collectively decide to show the world their outrage. it doesn't mean it's right, but it means that this issue isn't just a bunch of bad people using any excuse they can find to make other people miserable.
Dude have you fucking seen rise of the planet of the apes. It's fucking 1:1 with this. A bunch of people jumping on cars, pulling people out, beating on anything they see.
Just out of curiosity can you show what you mean by doing it on youtubedoubler?
I'm gonna play devil's advocate here and say that those posters weren't saying that they were like apes because of their skin color, but rather that they were like apes due to their behavior. Seems trivial, but it's an important distinction.
like i said in a previous thread. if they aren't outright racist, they are being incredibly racially insensitive and ignorant about their word choice. if black people being compared to apes is not a great time to start having a discussion about race in america, then there is no good time and we might as well just give up on the whole equality/civil rights thing altogether.
so...like 5-6 posts comparing black people to apes... do people still think that race has nothing to do with this issue?
Welcome to Sensationalist Headlines post Zimmerman verdict aka the Summer of Blatant Racism 2013
I'm gonna play devil's advocate here and say that those posters weren't saying that they were like apes because of their skin color, but rather that they were like apes due to their behavior. Seems trivial, but it's an important distinction.
I made this argument a couple times in the other Zimmerman threads specifically with the word thug and savage. I can't make the same argument for ape. It's blatantly being used for the racial connotation, maliciously or inadvertently. No one calls riot footage of a bunch of white people "planet of the apes". Atleast not on FP. Trust me, I looked.
well when they're jumping around on top of cars, dancing on them ( white guy, but he was acting like one too), and basically acting like they just escaped from the zoo then odds are there's gonna be a few people that will describe them as being like an ape.
I looked up 3 threads from the Greek riots in the last couple of years and didn't see one post calling anyone an ape. Meanwhile the first page of a Crenshaw LA riot has several references. They aren't calling them apes because they are rioting.
By continuing to associate the word Ape with black people you are indeed continuing the idea that a black person can be called an ape. Get over that notion! An ape is obviously not a black person. An ape is an animal and these people (regardless of their skin color) are behaving similarly to an animal.
What the fuck are you on about? The only reason I'm associating the word ape with black people is because ignorant racists have done it for hundreds of years.
Why do people riot about a court case that's already been settled when there are things like the NSA or foreign affairs to take to the streets for?
It isn't so much about the court case, rather its about what it represents and the racial tensions around it.
I'm gonna play devil's advocate here and say that those posters weren't saying that they were like apes because of their skin color, but rather that they were like apes due to their behavior. Seems trivial, but it's an important distinction.
I'm glad I'm not the only one that saw it from this point of view.
Thank God I live in the south.
black people [editline]17th July 2013[/editline] not apes
What the fuck are you on about? The only reason I'm associating the word ape with black people is because ignorant racists have done it for hundreds of years.
And that is exactly my point. The only reason that for hundreds of years black people have been called apes by ignorant racists is because people keep allowing that to happen. Quit associating ape with a black person and the idea of ape as a racist term will cease to exist in time. Words change meaning and it starts with people who understand this.
You know, if Trayvon was still alive I'm pretty sure he wouldn't approve of them doing this in the name of "justice for Trayvon"
I live in california currently, it wasn't too long ago that somebody walked down my street yelling justice for Trayvon whatever the fuck. got this shit's annoying. wish they could just design a vacuum cleaner and suck it up.
You know, if Trayvon was still alive I'm pretty sure he wouldn't approve of them doing this in the name of "justice for Trayvon"
too be fair I have to ask myself the question, "what if it wasn't Trayvon, and it was some other african american kid", and the "protests" still happened, do you think Trayvon would be participating?
It isn't so much about the court case, rather its about what it represents and the racial tensions around it.
this isn't just "justice for trayvon", this is about "justice for every trayvon out there". there are many cases of white people shooting people of color and getting away with it on syg or self-defense. syg in general seems to, in practice, allow for white people to have an easier time getting away with killing blacks. this is the case that made national attention, but there have been many more that get little more than a local news story written about it. i don't really agree with the people focusing in on zimmerman's guilt, because it is arguing a smaller point. the major point should be that blacks are still treated as second-class citizens in the usa and we should all be outraged because of it. even as a white man, with white privilege, i want to fight it if only for the fact that by my inaction i become an oppressor of sorts.
And that is exactly my point. That sounds like exactly the kind of behavior that leads people to continue using racially insensitive language. How about this: Don't call black people apes. It's incredibly easy.
this isn't just "justice for trayvon", this is about "justice for every trayvon out there". there are many cases of white people shooting people of color and getting away with it on syg or self-defense. syg in general seems to, in practice, allow for white people to have an
what do you mean PEOPLE? Sick, Bad, I can say a million other examples. Obviously, in your scenario no one would understand your term the same way they would understand theirs. You'd need to adapt and change for others to understand just because the community, the people you involve yourself in have a different meaning for that word. If enough people change what the word means, the word will have a different meaning.
people who want to go around stealing and beating the shit out of people will probably do so without an excuse. these riots happen because they are releasing a lot of stored tension and frustration at a racist society at large. a lot of people go through the day just dealing with the fact the system is fucking them over, and don't cause a scene. then things like the trayvon martin case end up opening up the debate over race in america, and people begin to see an outlet for their frustration, whether it's through protesting or wrecking shit. that's why riots over political issues happen in general. people are sick of putting up with shit and collectively decide to show the world their outrage. it doesn't mean it's right, but it means that this issue isn't just a bunch of bad people using any excuse they can find to make other people miserable.
The fact that the American public at large (and, likewise, this entire Facepunch subforum) doesn't realize this is absolutely fucking insane. There are a lot of stupid voices about this trial in both communities (in my own experience, I had one friend remove me from everything on her social media accounts for simply explaining why Zimmerman couldn't be found guilty), but these past three days have shown me that Facepunch has a notoriously regressive handle on social justice issues. From the misunderstanding of words such as "Hispanic/Latino" (not a race; the census doesn't recognize "Hispanic/Latino" as a race) to defending Zimmerman's poor Neighborhood Watch work, so many people here have no idea why the case happened. Not a fact level, but on a simple critical thinking level. The fact that people are willing to justify racially insensitive comments like "they look like apes" is one of the stupidest things I've seen on this forum in 3 years, and comments like "it's like the planet of the apes" is both extremely disrespectful to poc as well as the CBS people actually in the van. The fact that we have had people repeatedly saying "there will be riots; it's going to be 1992 all over again" showcases how many people do not even understand the difference between Rodney King and the Zimmerman trial. And the fact that we need to have discussions like, "Was Zimmerman accountable for anything? Or was it all Trayvon's fault?" are mind-numbing. I get it, Facepunch users have varying views on news issues that are based on their own sociological, educational, and offline experiences. It's not illegal to have controversial, racially-charged, or pro-Zimmerman views. But some of the comments made on the forums in the past 72 hours have been some of the stupidest racism apologist shit I've ever seen on Facepunch. It's like there's barely any reasonable heads in this whole entire discussion. No one is willing to sit down and say "Well, everyone is wrong and we should have a serious discussion about how racism is seriously building tension within the United States's black communities." Instead, it's just poster after posting suggesting that this whole situation is Trayvon's fault, black people are just "pissed and looking for an excuse to riot," "white privilege is not a thing," and they should just "suck it up and deal with it." There's barely any critical thinking about racial sociological issues going on in this subforum, which is why most of these Zimmerman threads quickly delve into shitty discussions and flat-out racist viewpoints. There's nothing valuable coming out of these threads at all.
you can't fight racism through ignoring it. doing so makes you complicit in oppression. you can only fight racism through reflection on your own vocabulary, your own racial outlook, and your own actions, and choosing to change them. if we all began to look at how we personally enable racist ideas to perpetuate, our racist system wouldn't be able to sustain itself.
But it isn't ignoring it. It's an active attempt at changing the word's meaning by acknowledging its past and applying it to something that cannot be exclusive to one person.
"Uncivilized" and "savage" may not be racist but using "ape" do describe somebody has always been racist, at least where I come from.
Where I come from behaving like an ape means to behave poorly or act in a savage manner.
Where I come from behaving like an ape means to behave poorly or act in a savage manner. Ho dear you mean words have different meanings sometimes?
Hey yeah that's cool but ape as a derogatory word for black people was established hundreds of years ago when ignorant white europeans started using it and ignorant people in general have perpetuated it's use today. I'm also sure it's purely coincidental that I can't find a single instance of the word ape used to reference white rioters on FP.
You seem to forget not everyone lives in America. Please remove the pictures as well, they're not helping any sort of discussion in this thread.
I edited the text, but they're proving my point that ape/monkey/chimpanzee/ w/e has massive connotations towards race in America. There are people here making these photos. Unless you do live outside of the US, you'd have to be blind not to be aware of how monkey jokes can be offensive.
