Um, wha? Sorry but you'll have to word that in a different way. My primate brain isn't that effective at sorting out sentences like that, lol. I gotta say, I'm somewhat surprised at your reactions. Facepunch, being full to the brim of atheists, seem to be assembling into a murder of crows to peck at me. Keep doing it, it's turning me on.
That statement wasn't targeted at you so why would you read it as if it were? Sorry to burst your apparently huge epeen bubble, but I've not been speaking to you for the vast majority of this conversation.

In fact, I didn't read it at all because I couldn't make heads or tails with it. Don't know where you got that idea. You is crazy. I'm outta here. This threads heating up too rapidly and I don't want it to melt. Discuss the main topic, not my opinions, even if they stand out. Want to continue the pointless debate with me? Do so in PM, but please not here, as it's dangerously irrelevant.

I really tip my hat to Stephen, because just by looking at how he produces his sentences by operating a computer with only a single muscle makes me gringe, because I wouldn't have the patience to do or learn that. I wonder what kind of a man he would be if he never got diagnosed with the disease he has.
well at least I can fucking walk
Asshole. He's trying to further our understanding of the universe despite his condition. At the very least respect him for that.
You can't disprove or prove the existence of god or an afterlife, not with the information we have, so scientifically agnosticism is correct not atheism.
I often hear that it's supposedly impossible to disprove an entity that doesn't exist. That's not true. It's very easy to disprove many kinds of gods. Omnipotent gods, for example, violate logic merely by existing. If they couldn't violate logic, they wouldn't be omnipotent. That's a logical contradiction and either logic is wrong or omnipotent gods don't exist. The former assumption is destructive and must be abandoned. Granted, that's merely proof by exhaustion. It doesn't disprove the existence of every imaginary creature. It can only be used to disprove the existence of those imaginary creatures that would have a significant impact if they did exist. It only leaves behind insignificant gods.

I'm pretty sure we would have had a scientific revolution and most of this religious crap would be gone.
Those Yahoo comments make me so pissed I could spit.
I just have a hard time believing in a place only mentioned in a really old book.
I just have a hard time believing in a place only mentioned in a really old book.
It's also worth mentioning that the modern image and idea of Hell and Satan comes from Dante's Inferno, not the Bible.
Why can't they ever find a good picture of Stephan Hawking
Why can't they ever find a good picture of Stephan Hawking
The man has looked the same for like 30 fucking years.
I believe in his words, mostly because religion ends up contradicting itself loads and loads of times. And thats just one good reason to dismiss religion in my book.
Stephen Hawking is a smart guy, but does he not see the difference between humans and computers? One can not prove anyone else has a soul, but one can sense their own soul's existence. People can tell they're not just big, self-sustaining sequences of chemical reactions. Science has a problem with denying the existence of anything that can not be measured. Perhaps there is no life after death, and it's hard to believe because we can not comprehend non-existence, but humans do have souls, or at the very least I know I have a soul, so the comparison to computers just doesn't work.
It's also worth mentioning that the modern image and idea of Hell and Satan comes from Dante's Inferno, not the Bible.
Which is a really cool image if you ask me. A 100m huge satan stuck in ice with 3 heads each chewing on a different person.
People souls makes the universe expand.

There is no soul. When you die you seize to exist, your body lets off a huge dose of DMT (it's a psychedelic drug) which is the same chemical that makes you dream. This high is what gives people those out of body experiences when they have near death experiences. If you don't cling onto life and claim what you saw in your massive DMT rush as a religious experience you simply drift off into a dream world until your body literally shuts down. Your brain dies, you die, you seize to exist and you have no way of ever knowing you existed. You are no more. Can you remember how you were before birth? This is the most logical explanation.

If you want to believe that you are something more than just a walking hunk of meat, you think that there is a greater source of power within you ie. a soul. Science is based on rational thinking and facts. Having a soul, god or anything supernatural cannot be comprehended or proven by either of those. That's why they don't exist from a scientifical point of view.
I don't know. Here's how I see religion. Religion is a part of human nature that has a chance of occurring. It gives us hope and morals, but is inevitably false. The next step in human evolution is to denounce religion, and my friends, this next step is already taking place, we just all haven't experienced it yet. Religion WAS vital, but now we are beginning to grow out of it. Imagine it as a mothers breast milk, feeding all of humanity, giving us a certain necessity to progress, but it is inevitable that we will all grow out of it. It's quite exciting, seeing the atheist revolution grow and grow, taking over the ancient and now obsolete idea of religion. Can't wait until everyone has evolved past the idea of God. Just imagine what we can accomplish. No more hatred towards gays, stem cell research internationally accepted, rape victims able to get abortions. And most of all, no more holy wars. I'm honored to be a part of the generation that is witnessing this transformation of humanity!
I believe in the life I'm having right now.

How is this news?
"Because there is a law such as gravity, the Universe can and will create itself from nothing. Spontaneous creation is the reason there is something rather than nothing, why the Universe exists, why we exist. It is not necessary to invoke God to ... set the Universe going,"
But what created the law of gravity, eh?
But what created the law of gravity, eh? :itisamystery:
Don't you mean who?
The "reasonable" perspective changes over time. 500 years ago the "reasonable" perspective was to assume it was gods doing.
So you base your opinions and belief on 500 year old evidence? Smart.
Seeing how miniscule your life is and how you will cease to exist someday is just too much for some people. I don't blame em, it's a scary thought.
From the yahoo comment section: "I don't understand how anyone could believe that there is no God. How do you think this earth was formed and we came about. Why do you think our bodies needs the minerals from the earth. God said he made us from the dirt.If you read your bible, you will understand that things are happening now just like it says in the bible. He says in the last days he will get our attention. Look at the floods, tornados, the sickness. People need to open their eyes and ome to him before it's too late. Once you die and you don't believe it's to late to change then. your time has expired. We all have a appointment to die. We don't know when that is, but God does. Unlike us, God don't cancel his appointments. I feel sorry for the ones that say they don't believe. But those same ones will call out to God in the time of need" I don't fucking understand it. I can't even put it to words. Calling people like that dumb seems so offensive, but I don't give a fuck. How can human beings be so dumb? Is it just that all these people are too weak-minded to accept that they actually only have one life and will die and forever be dead at the end of it? I mean really? Death doesn't scare me a bit, eternity does. But its a lie. So I'm fine. He's not, obviously. [editline]16th May 2011[/editline]
Oooh, an Atheist thread! It's like a religion thread except the irrational people are rated winner! :buddy:
Because in religion threads reasonable people are rated winner. Sure.
There better be a fucking afterlife. Dieing must suck ass if there isn't.
There better be a fucking afterlife. Dieing must suck ass if there isn't.
You seem to have no life then.
There better be a fucking afterlife. Dieing must suck ass if there isn't.
Do you remember being a sperm? Then you won't know even know you existed once you die. There will be nothing.
