Clint Eastwood breaks silence on empty chair speech

While Clint is a good actor and director, he's a poor ad libber. I mean, the concept was a bit interesting, but its execution was poor, and to be honest, Clint really isn't the kind of person who could pull that off.
He spent most of his career as an actor. That is, a person who says lines written by someone else. This is why lots of actors are so boring or otherwise inarticulate on talk shows and things like that, they are fish out of water unless someone tells them what to say.
So it's not surprising when an 80 year old actor tries to speak without a script and is pretty much nonsensical.
The part that surprises me is that they let him go out there without even a rough outline of what he was going to say. That's taking a hell of a risk, an old guy can get it into his head to say all kinds of things.

how was the concept good exactly?
looking like an idiot is a "good" concept?

Well, a better execution would have been far more entertaining.

Entertaining in a good way.
Jesus Christ Clint's performance wasn't rooted in his age, ability to ad lib (or supposed lack thereof), depth as an actor, depth as a politician, intelligence, etc.
He gave a poor speech because he went for a gimmicky concept. It's not an inherent issue in his character, it's an inherent issue in what he specifically did.
Just sayin, you guys know he's nothing like his movie characters in real life right?
He plays piano and he hates cigars.
Fuck, if anything that makes him more badass
Chuck Norris isn't a badass, he just plays badasses. there is a difference.
There we go
but Obama is betteeeeerrr.
No, both Obama and Romney are idiots. They both have their foot in their mouth 24/7 and they both have their bad points.
You can't decide whether you like a political candidate or not until they serve in whatever office they're running for at least once. The hate for Republicans and Romney here is almost on the level of racism against African Americans. People here hate Republicans often times just because they exist.
The various news sources have a field day every election year about smearing things candidates said one way or another, but almost always the things that whatever candidate say during their election campaign never come to pass, they're mostly lies.
I don't want to watch that speech and have my view of Clint Eastwood ruined forever. Hell, I'm democrat, but I still don't want to watch somebody I think is cool fuck up.

Just because I think his political ideology is horrible and he's silly for supporting Romney, I still can watch a good movie with him in it and appreciate him for being a great actor.
he just struck me as a senile old man
"Well, I had a speech at hand. However, just before I went on stage, I shit my britches and forgot who I was for 30 minutes."

How does that make him any less bad-ass? It just means he's not a rampent generic Duke Nukem type.
I can easily imagine James Bond playing the Moonlight sonata or thanking no to a cuban. Hell, the only alcohol he'll drink is a Martini that's shaken, not stirred. Adds some personality and class.

so
I hate alcohol and I play casual games, doesn't stop me from being awesome.
If anything, the "piano" thing is a plus, assuming he's good at it (which wouldn't surprise me unless he's only started recently)
My favorite moments of that night happened immediately afterward:
Rachael Maddow, blinking at the camera, stunned to silence. . .finally stammering, "That was. . .um. . .it. . .uh. . .well, it. . .ah. . . . .well, he IS 82. . ."
and Al Sharpton: "Something tells me this isn't the first time Clint Eastwood has had a conversation with a chair."
EDIT:
Somewhere, Clint Eastwood sits alone in a darkened room, brooding. He occasionally grunts, and lifts a sleeve to wipe a drop of spittle at the corner of his mouth. His eyes dart around the room for a bit, finally coming to rest on an ottoman in the corner. His eyebrows furrow.
"Fuck you, Mondale," he mutters bitterly.

comparing people hating republicans for being republicans to people hating blacks for being black is stupid. the republican party is a political group with a set agenda, if you consider yourself a republican then you adhere to this agenda, if this agenda is fucked then it's safe to assume you're fucked too. i don't hate republicans for existing, i hate them for supporting the platform they do. not a fan of obama or the democrats either by the way.

you could be preaching the validity of personal gender identity and say this and it would still invalidate your post entirely
