I wish they would. SSNs are the password to your life that you can't change without going through a bunch of bullshit to convince the government you need a new one. Many employers and services require you keep it on file with them, and giving a fake one can be counted as an act of fraud.
It's hard to feel sorry for them if you ask me, if you're getting involved in shit like this you should be aware that these kind of outcomes are very possible.
