limited freedom of speech, its already in place today
for example, its illegal for you to say "i am going to kill president obama"
It's also illegal to shout fire in a movie theater!
It's also illegal to shout fire in a movie theater!
They're not shouting fire in a movie theatre.
They aren't protesting anything, they are just inciting hate and harassing people.
With that logic, you could take down any protests.
Wall Street could say "oh they're inciting hate and harassing us" down at OWS.

Apologist
Apologist
Or someone who doesn't think restricting freedom of thought is a good idea because YOU don't like what they say.
Releasing anybody's personal info is a pretty dick move but WBC should've seen this coming a mile away.
Or someone who doesn't think restricting freedom of thought is a good idea because YOU don't like what they say.
I can understand the freedom of speech point, but it's a scam one way or another. Piss off the people and get attention, try to invoke them into doing something so they can get free money from lawsuiting the individual(s). They might believe in what they say, if them disowning one of their daughters is anything to go by, but they pretty much have no support in the entire nation. Freedom of Speech has its applications and I don't think simply removing it from them is good by the rules of the Universal Human Rights, but there's a point where the speech ends and the attempts to intentionally piss off everyone for easy money comes in.
Nice going Anonymous. For the most part the MSM was doing a good job at not giving these WBC members press coverage, because if no one hears about it, their power is weakened. The only "source" covering the WBC was Examiner.com "bloggers" and one local news station.
Now, thanks to this attack, more sources are reporting on this story. So all Anonymous has done is given WBC more power.
You Americans sure do love your 'freedums'.
I'm all for freedom of speech, But sometimes I really think there should be a line. What the Westboro church does is just sickening.
There is a line. The westboro church steps across the line, then draws another line and takes a flying leap over that one.
WBC are a perfect example of those groups and people who abuse their freedoms and rights
You Americans sure do love your 'freedums'.
I respect their freedom to do what they do, doesn't mean I have to show them a bit of respect, or sympathy when they bring these things upon themselves. They're basically running a scam.
i dislike the WBC. they're not cool people and I bet nobody sits with them at the lunch table
A friend of mine just linked me to an interesting petition:
https://petitions.whitehouse.gov/petition/legally-recognize-westboro-baptist-church-hate-group/DYf3pH2d
I realize that the website is basically useless, but the more signatures it gets, the better the chances they might pay attention to it, right?
Or is that just hopeful thinking?
They aren't protesting anything, they are just inciting hate and harassing people.
Negatory. They're protesting the course that this nation has taken.
but they are also inciting hate.
They aren't harassing, technically, for reasons I've explained in depth in a previous debate on this issue, and would be happy to repeat here if you insist.
the WBC are engaged in hate speech. That's illegal
Hate speech is not illegal in the United States and they technically aren't practicing hate speech.
Not in the eyes of the government
Because as we all know the government is a perfect single being.
And then there's the fact that if you try to do anything against them, even non-violently, they jump at the opportunity to sue you.
I'm not going to argue about freedom of thought or freedom of speech, all I'll say is that, in my opinion, despite having the ability to freely state most of your thoughts and feelings people need to have the class to keep it to themselves sometimes.
What are the signs going to say? "GOD HATES CHILDREN"
Lets all just give this minimal attention and continue with our lives
WBC are a perfect example of those groups and people who abuse their freedoms and rights
How do you abuse freedoms and rights?
Freedom of speech and assembly were made specifically for the type of group that Westboro is, a small group of people with a point of view that goes contrary to the majority.

Using those rights to attempt to incite violence against onself as to achieve personal gain.
It's basically "trolling," baiting people for things like dead family members. They don't honestly hold those views as far as we know. Yes, they're legally allowed to do these demonstrations but don't act as if this is some sad group oppressed by the majority for following their own beliefs. And even if they really believe these things (please explain to me the logic of picketing the funeral of dead children, the bible doesn't say anything that I could even imagine could be negative towards children) I still believe they have that right.
I'm not going to argue about freedom of thought or freedom of speech, all I'll say is that, in my opinion, despite having the ability to freely state most of your thoughts and feelings people need to have the class to keep it to themselves sometimes.
But put yourself in their minds. Imagine, that, instead of being a heinous hate crime, that what they were saying is "God hates slavery". Let's imagine for a moment that they picketed the funerals of Confederate soldiers and promoted the treatment of blacks as equals. Society itself finds this heinous- as heinous as anything we hear from them in reality. And in this imaginary world, there is someone sitting on an internet forum saying:
"I'm not going to argue about freedom of thought or freedom of speech, all I'll say is that, in my opinion, despite having the ability to freely state most of your thoughts and feelings people need to have the class to keep it to themselves sometimes."
This is how WBC thinks. They don't see themselves as immoral or evil or spouting something unclassy. They see themselves as promoting the right thing, the correct thing, and that we are wrong. We all agree that they aren't, and society at large also believes this, but that doesn't mean we get to tell WBC to shut their 'abolitionist' mouths or request that they keep quiet.

"As far as we know"? As far as we know, they do hold these values. You have to remember that this church was founded far before they began protesting and picketing this stuff. And they aren't the only ones with these beliefs- there's a very large movement of fundamentalist Christians that believe these same things, but are simply less vocal. Even if they aren't the ones believing it, this belief does exist, and someone is saying it.
How about every time a westboro church member dies we picket THEIR funeral
I really wish they'd stop calling them Anonymous when you should be calling them a group of spergy morons.

You do not understand laws.
You do not understand Anonymous.
A shitload of them are spergy fucks because they do it "for the lulz" but it has a healthy portion of intelligence.
if anything the intelligence is masked by the stupidity, so when a good portion of anonymous people work together, they aren't taken serious until the hardcore, working non spammers really fuck shit up, possibly using the assistance of the less useful bulk of the group. The bigger the group, the bigger the results.
Also I don't see how releasing their contact info is a big deal.
4chan did this earlier this year/sometime last year. I still have the screencap saved.

No they most certainly are not.
Anonymous is literally just a 4Chan name given to a group of people who ironically aren't very anonymous in terms of who they are.

Far too nice.
Sauce-less, stuffed crust, extra cheese w/ sardines.
Now I want to donate money to anonymous.
No they most certainly are not.

are you actually trying to say 4chan and anon are hand in hand... are you actually THIS naive?
Anonymous literally only means a group that chooses to not have a name at all so they use a blanket name to hide themselves
it as literally no connection to anyone. That's like saying Socialism and the USA go very hand in hand because that's where it started.
the only connection to anonymous and 4chan is the blank names. Every other board like that does the same. 4chan isn't the only one.
Are you like two?
yes
because making an obvious harmless joke makes me immature

You are giving way too much credit to these losers

Anonymous is 4Chans collective group of spergs, don't pretend it's anything but.
They literally run off the coattails of 4chan.
[editline]16th December 2012[/editline]
They're NOT some sort of social activist group. And if they're absolutely convinced they are then they are exceptionally ineffective.

You keep saying that but don't provide facts to support it. Not all of Anon is that, many just want to fight for what they believe in and fight corruption. If they want to do that through Anon, they have every right to. Especially when they fight for our everyday freedoms, like what they did against SOPA.
