Kill this bill. No one wants a fast tracked nuclear reactor near them
Hell, if I owned my own home + land I'd setup my own small reactor in my basement. Fallout style.
Except the ones today have gone through rigorous vetting. Fast tracking something like this is not a good idea. [editline]24th January 2017[/editline] But yet again, Rick Perry is going to be in the DoE, so I guess it all really doesnt matter. Fast track all energy.
There is a LOT of useless red tape in the current process, and it could take some cleaning up. The reason being that we've never really used this system until now for building new reactors and we are now finding out where all of the useless redundant red tape is.
Silence I Kill You could probably go into the specifics of the red tape since he builds the reactors. I am looking forward more to seeing all the cool, non light water reactor designs get some attention. Those dont get built even for tests because we have invested so much into LWRs that the NRC doesn't have the staffing/people with the education to regulate these designs. Again, please contact your senators about this bill. They are more likely to pass it if they are familiar with it.
@code3 afaik we have all the pieces in place and the only problem was getting the green light. aka don't worry about a duct taped reactor being built in your driveway [editline]24th January 2017[/editline] also i'd encourage people to read the bill in addition to contacting representatives/senators. it's only 8 pages long: https://www.congress.gov/115/bills/hr590/BILLS-115hr590ih.pdf
I wish my granpa could see this, he worked his whole life for Gulf General Atomic until '79 when 3MI made everyone afraid of the big bad atom plant. I hope people will give it another chance.

I've got immediate family members who work on a Savannah River Site nuclear project, and they talk about constantly having issues due to red tape and bureaucratic inefficiencies that lead to cost overruns, delays, and other such problems. I actually just talked to my father (a nuclear engineer himself) about this, we're hoping the bill goes through. Gen 4 fission reactors and fusion reactors getting built would be a major boon to the economy and power grid, and would assist in weaning us off fossil fuels for power generation.
