I'm not an american and as such don't know too much about american politics, but am i right in thinking republicans are like a whiny child who doesn't get picked to be the leader in whatever game they are playing so they throw a tantrum and ruin the fun for everyone else? "NO, we are NOT doing this. If we can't be incharge we won't agree with you on anything!"
If you put it that way, they're pretty much like that, ironically. It's all about power.
Title is a bit misleading, as it wasn't killed:
50-49 oh come on, now they are going to push other republican crazy bills in exchange for this one. Damnit
There's not much i can say after reading this thread. Just wow. Politics in the US are broken.
That's heresay, let's try to keep the discussion focused around facts and not fears, mmkay?
I find that pretty hard to accomplish when discussing politics. For the most part it is peoples' opinions based off of other peoples' opinions which may or may not be correctly be based off of facts.
And the sad thing is that the republicans are probably going to be elected.
This is why i'm protesting downtown this weekend.
"I hate obama. obama sucks. ect.." Everyone is blaming obama for this shit when the republicans wont stop fucking declining everything

I wouldn't mind if every single person currently in office was forcibly removed, and all partisan news stations were taken off the air for 3 months leading up to the elections. Democrats would win by a landslide. [editline]13th October 2011[/editline] Only problem is leadership for those 3 months. [editline]13th October 2011[/editline] We need to ban corporations that our too big to fail. Monopolies are supposed to be illegal, not the case.

Why is senate allowed to do this in the US?
Could someone explain this graph to a non-American?
Cloture is used to slap a time limit on a bill or issue so that the voting can actually start. This is used to overcome a filibuster, which is a term for when a group deliberately tries to obstruct the process of a bill passing through congress. What the graph seems to be saying is that, starting at the 1970's, the political parties grew increasingly more and more hostile to each other, trying to block legislation from the other party, not by voting, but by preventing the voting from even happening. I believe that right now, tensions between the two parties have yet to reach a fever pitch. In other words: IT GETS WORSE.
Okay Im tired of all this crap. We need to take initiative.

Obama could propose a bill that totally goes toward what Republicans want, they'd still deny it because it's Obama who proposes it.

Holy FUCK, this is a to read. Anyhoozel, I've read the Republican side of this discussion, and they're literally talking out of their asses. It takes filibuster to a whole new dimension. "Well there's a reason we shouldn't create jobs, oh we shouldn't shave off billion of dollars of our national debt..." GOD DAAAAAAAAAAAAAMN
http://www.senate.gov/pagelayout/reference/cloture_motions/clotureCounts.htm
Nice. Can someone plop that data into Excel and get us a nice graph?
Republicans are just general assholes and like to destroy nice things. End of Story. ( I bet Boba_fett is gonna rate me dumb )
Republicans are just general assholes and like to destroy nice things. End of Story. ( I bet Boba_fett is gonna rate me dumb )
Politics should be about compromise and cooperation between different ideals. Your crude generalization is not helping.
Nice. Can someone plop that data into Excel and get us a nice graph?
fixed the graph I projected the end of the 112th congress's numbers based on if the data was as of this October. couple with this the fact that the other chart ends with a projected high of 70. [t]http://newsjunkiepost.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/Cloture-Invoked3Final.png[/t]
Politics should be about compromise and cooperation between different ideals. Your crude generalization is not helping.
Indeed it should be, but with the Republican Party pushed so far to the Religious Right, and the Democrats effectively having to take Centre-Right positions on just about everything, any compromise will land somewhere between "pretty conservative" and "everything the republicans asked for".
I like to think that it is not the fault of the entire party, but corruption in leadership and political motives. EDIT: Also, looking at the new graph, I am wondering why the drop in Clotures is so sudden, granted we have another year to go but the projected number is still lower than 09-10. I think what changed is that since the Republicans have a majority in the House of Representatives, they didn't need to filibuster anymore since they could just vote anything down. This is all just supposition on my part though.
Why is senate allowed to do this in the US?
To prevent dictatorship?
To prevent dictatorship?
but surely the democrats have the majority and thus should be able to pass laws with ease.
but surely the democrats have the majority and thus should be able to pass laws with ease.
Not exactly. The Republicans have the majority in the house of Representatives as of the 2010 elections. The Democrats managed to hold on to the Senate but it's not enough to pass whatever they want.
Not exactly. The Republicans have the majority in the house of Representatives as of the 2010 elections.
I like to think that it is not the fault of the entire party, but corruption in leadership and political motives.
Nope. Entire party. If your party just has a few failures on occasion, then whatever, but all the Republicans do, all day, every day, is make life as miserable as is humanly possible for everyone inside my country. I am no longer willing to compromise with these fucking psychopaths. I am tired of them, their extreme greed, and their ability to use their invisible magical friend as a weapon to control the ignorant masses fucking up my country. It is irresponsible and ridiculously dangerous when you have a nation that sits atop such an overfunded military force. I am tired of being told that compromise is the answer. The Democrats have compromised enough. We are barreling full steam ahead towards needing to kill the goddamn Republicans in order to solve the problem. Widespread peaceful protest is the first step, and as we have seen, it has very much been taken. Angry angry people are organizing across the country in large groups with other angry individuals. If this fails, these people don't magically disappear. They are now angry, poor, networked, and disenfranchised. This is when you start producing radicals as a society and when bad things begin to happen.
