There is no merit. His entire campaign was built around angrily shouting things that were made up on the spot, and people believed him. Or they wanted to spite Hillary. Or they thought Trump was an "outsider," which was disproved on day 1 after being elected by his cabinet choices. I can't wait for people to try to pin the failings of the coming administration on Obummer.
Or the most said, most talked about most pushed idea why people voted trump that shillaries keep omitting because it is incredibly uncomfortable for them... Hillary was unelectable because of her corruption scandals and had lost all her popularity because of the blatant rigging of the DNC against Bernie. I've seen polls go around saying 30 to up to 40% of Bernie sanders supporters voted trump, 20% voted Hillary and the rest voted 3th candidate...
I believe the idea that the money would be taken from the funding we currently send mexico, not that we would actually have mexico send us money for it. A lot of the early arguments about this were along the lines of "we give mexico money for valid diplomatic reasons, essentially to exert control and power over them, so we shouldnt just take that away for no reason" and i tend to agree even though i dont have much faith in american diplomacy.
We give Mexico about 50 million dollars a year. The most conservative estimations for a wall along the border is 10 billion.
