Ultraviolet light reveals how ancient Greek statues really looked

I like them better without the paint.
If you ever make your way to Italy, make sure to try the ice cream there. I have never pleasured my tastebuds with such golden flavor before.
But my trip did cost a pretty penny, and I highly doubt I will be going any time soon. One week, and I took 1,776 photographs, covering as much as I can. I didn't go on my own, though. It was part of my college's art program, actually. For an extra 3 credits, if you paid the $2,300, they allowed you to go on a complete tour around Florence and Rome. We were suppose to focus on the artwork, but I went for the history :hist101:

Just realized that this thread was about Greek art, and once again the Romans conquered. :v:
Albeit master artisans; the color palette presented is hideous.
Looks like someone just read a Cracked article.
This was unexpected!

Even if I had (btw I haven't yet), it doesn't change the fact that this is awesome and worth discussing. :colbert:
Can someone put a link to this Cracked article everyone is mentioning? I would like to read it and I can't find it.

Loved the "Chinesus!" joke :v:
That is correct. Especially from Greece. It was considered to greatly up your social status if you had a Greek slave, who were usually used as tutors for their children.
Greek slaves could barely be called "slave" in a sense, as most were extremely well treated and had more liberty than most others in servitude.
Why is it that as society progressed onward, people started treating slaves worse and worse?
It seems odd that a slave in the human trafficking rings these days is treated like shit while a Greek one was treated fine. I understand the purpose is different now but still.
Man realized, "This person is working for me, I'm not paying him..I can treat him like shit and get away with it!", except people were nicer back then maybe?
You don't rely on slaves to teach your kids, to cook your food or to read and write your letters. If you did, you would treat them well.
Science!

Looks like a tranny.
I like them better without the tacky painting tbh.
There goes my mental image of the Greeks living in plain white utopias...
I always used to think that most ancient marble statues were left unpainted. I always had a hard time picturing what they all would have looked like as painted sculptures.
Kind of amazing what a little science can do to the way you perceive things. :science:
The ancients had a very precise, and exact art. us finding what they once did then, really bring out the light of what they actually had.
Its a known fact, that alot of the "rich" cities of "rich" countries, had very colorful, bright cities.
Its what drew people in awe to them. The reason to conquer.
Ever see skyscrapers now? While they lack color, they have masonry.. but the right artistry on them, and they would be beautiful.
Too bad real art slipped away from society.

This kind of art... On modern buildings? The world would look like... Well, like your avatar.
My God, the Romans had invisible bows.

Good point!
I don't even have a real world reasoning behind this. We moved forward. We just cant simply push the ancients as "not knowing" to produce color and life likeness.
Infact, our masonry abilities in the last 3000 years have nearly died off. We're all carpentry or foundry(steel/metal) these days.

I am sorry, citizen, but these Greek statues are currently placed at Security Clearance ULTRAVIOLET. Seeing any of the true colors contained within these statues without appropriate security clearance is considered treason. Please proceed directly to the nearest available Termination Booth. Have a fantastic day!
Oh god I nostalgia'd so hard. :v:
They're beautiful..
They are fucking ugly in my opinion, unpainted they looked way better.
Yeah, they look pretty good.
the paint makes them look like they're made of plastic
They look amazing.
Woah that's trippy and awesome at the same time.

So true. I've never tasted ice cream as good as the Pistacchio flavoured that I bought from a small shop in Cicily. So incredibly tasty.
Shine the light on dinosaur bones so we can see what they look like :downs:
