Credit cards aren't that common in the Netherlands. It's literally just something most family's have on them in case of an emergency. No one ever really pays with them.
I think I was pretty responsible with money at the age of eighteen. I saved up a lot of money so that by the time I left my parents' place I was able to by my own brand new appartment with a much lower mortgage and was able to furnish the entire place.
I have a debit card. I can only spend what I have in my account...but that doesn't help because I have enough to buy whatever I impulsively want.
Set up a Standing order to a secondary account for a large % of your wages into another acount after expenses. that way you can impulse buy on your primary account but not totally fuck yourself over.
If they were smart at all, they would not get a credit card.
If you live in the US and are above 18 (or even younger if you aren't going to university) you should seriously get a credit card because having a good credit score is practically necessary. If you just use it like a debit card and build up a score it's fine. Just try to never reach a point where you can only make the minimum payment, that's when you start to accumulate debt.
