Censorship and restriction of freedom of speech at it's finest. Good job Facebook, you shmucks.
We should not restrict language, no matter the 'consequences,' it's a basis for freedom and free-thought.
How do you go about banning racism? Let racists speak and get laughed at by society. The punishment system is already inherent.

and yet when the same thing happens to someone using a trans slur its a big deal and a matter of "free speech" and something to laugh at.
They've been slurs for a very long time now. Ignorance is just so widespread, intended or not, that a lot of people don't know they are. The accepted colloquial term is trans.
If nobody's using it offensively then why is it offensive?
Because honestly that sounds fucking stupid.

I believe people should be able to say whatever they want.
I also believe that it's their fault if what they say is totally and purposely offensive and they get expunged from the norm of society because of it.
If nobody's using it offensively then why is it offensive?

The same reason why using the words 'retarded' or 'faggot' is still offensive. People use those words to describe different people (examples: retarded= you're stupid, not meaning you're mentally ill but those with mental disabilities still take offence from it's original use. Faggot usually is just a standard insult, but LGBT members still take offence) but it's original meaning is still bigoted and hateful.
I believe people should be able to say whatever they want.
Can we just be clear from here on out that no one has the 'right' to be a bigot.
and yet when the same thing happens to someone using a trans slur its a big deal and a matter of "free speech" and something to laugh at.
Because nobody's trying to be offensive. If someone calls someone a racial slur just because they're a different race, then yeah, it's a big fucking issue because they're doing it on purpose. This is more like saying "fuck" in a room full of people you didn't know were religious.
Wait, shemale and tranny are now bad words?
Have been for a decade, man.

As far as the boundaries of where I live go, saying "faggot" is obviously offensive because it's not something a person not trying to piss off somebody would say.
"Retarded" on the other hand, I see your point.

I don't think it matters if they're trying to be offensive or not. A pretty much given rule is that you should know the boundaries of the people around you before you start dropping words like faggot or tranny.
I do think there are certain exceptions to that rule like say you're a well documented famous comedian known for that type of humor who could not possibly know what offends his or her audience. In that case people should avoid said comedian if they know they'll take offense to his or her jokes.

Something offensive causes distress and upsets someone. You don't need to be aiming to be offensive to offend someone, it's how the person takes it that defines it as offensive to them.

You can't exactly forcibly change who a person is. The government shouldn't be regulating what people can say or believe.
Private communities on the other should be able to.

i find it really hard to believe people aren't aware that 'shemale' and 'tranny' are offensive.

I thought "shemale" referred to some kind of fetish regarding "chicks with dicks" (aka futa IIRC?)

Well you're not really right, but it is a word used a lot on porn sites.
Regardless, I'd hope you wouldn't use it to describe somebody you happen to see or are just talking about in a conversation.

Pretty sure this article isn't even about that, it's about someone getting banned from Facebook.
In any case, usually when someone says they have the 'right' to do something they mean kind of a free-from-repraisal kind of right. Now, you don't have a right to be a bigot and be free from criticism or censure by your work if, for example, you're a spokesperson or some media personality or executive. It's got nothing to do with a law that says "it is illegal to say [x number of slurs]", but there could very well be anti-discrimination or anti-harassment laws that take into account you saying those words as part of a larger, more substantial offense. If your boss calls you a slut and a whore at work, and threatens to fire you if you report it to HR, that's harassment in which slurs play a pretty important role.
People who say freedom of speech should also include hateful speech have probably never been on the receiving end of hate speech or similar harassment.
Like, shit, if somebody says something hateful specifically to offend or demean, is it really so bad to tell them to stop or punish them for it? Especially if it's in public/they're influential.
Who get's to define what's considered hateful?
I know I personally don't trust any political party with that task.
Because nobody's trying to be offensive. Tranny and shemale are derogatory slurs aimed specifically at teams people, usually transwomen. So no this is actually exactly like calling someone a racial slur because you dislike their race. Uess you mean this exact instance where the lady used it passingly.
i find it really hard to believe people aren't aware that 'shemale' and 'tranny' are offensive.
With the way porn sites use them it isn't that hard to believe.
;44585446']Have been for a decade, man.
Give it 20 years it'll probably become acceptable to use it ironically.
I always thought tranny was short for transvestite.
Let's see the extreme section of the feminist movement: where people joke about cutting dicks off (the view), men and white people are demonized (Suey Park and that one lady who goes around giving speeches on how they can make a world without men)
I'm not saying 'misandry' is real but there is sure a lot of people who want it to be real
i just dont even
even if you're joking (I really hope you are), this is the kind of shit mentality that ruins the credibility of transdudes and dudettes. like, "awowW wfwTFF it's like MAN with a long hair!!! gross!!"
literally who gives a fuck? you shouldn't have to have X bodytype or Y hair in order to identify as Z. making fun of this chick based on her appearance is just like me saying some dork on /r/mensrights isn't a man because his facial hair is ugly, or he has a weird nose or something.

Only if it means people who speak hatefully (racism etc) permanently revoke their claim to the 8th Amendment (or your country's equivalent)
I always thought tranny was short for transvestite.
it originally was short for transvestites and transgender people, however it's meaning changes when you're getting beat up/harnessed with it being thrown at you in a similar way a racial slur is thrown around when violence occurs to them.
Would this topic be put to rest if we all agree that only trans people can use the word like how black people are the only ones who can say the n word?
Would this topic be put to rest if we all agree that only trans people can use the word like how black people are the only ones who can say the n word?
how about nobody uses it because its a generally awful word with a bad history
Would this topic be put to rest if we all agree that only trans people can use the word like how black people are the only ones who can say the n word?
Anyone can say either one of those words as much as they want and wherever they want, they just have to deal with the consequences of doing so.
People think the internet is this bastion of free speech but it's actually a place where you don't have any right to free speech at all, unless you own the server that you're putting your speech on.

The way to defeat words is by not giving them any power in the first place.

Not sure how this is even a retort. I mean, this thread involved no violence. Just a word. Even then, the word doesn't have power; the violence does. I've stopped giving the words power and I'm happier as a result. Even when someone decides to drop it on me. I just shrug it off. Seriously, try it instead of listening to some poorly written tumblr post.

not really sure how its poorly written. its less about violence and more about how you cant just up and "stop giving words power" because you aren't the one who puts power behind it.
In 2014, you feel absolutely comfortable reclaiming the term fag because of how far removed you are from the gay rights movements of the 70s and 80s. I highly doubt that the people at the forefront of the lgbt movement during that time would have just simply said “fag is just a word
Fag is losing its meaning and strength. Its a sign of social progress.
