not really sure how its poorly written. its less about violence and more about how you cant just up and "stop giving words power" because you aren't the one who puts power behind it.
IMO if a persuasive argument can't articulate a point without being overly aggressive and cussing up a storm then it is poorly written.
And that also makes no sense. Just because someone else gives it power doesn't mean you have to give it power. If you don't fucking care then you don't fucking care. If you don't let people get to you then they have no power over you and your emotions. It's simple. It's easy. If its not possible then how come I've done it? In all honesty it just sounds like an excuse to be a baby over something.

just because you "don't care" doesn't mean the word doesnt have power if its being used against you, especially violently. cursing and aggression have no bearing on wether or not something is poorly written.
Fag is losing its meaning and strength. Its a sign of social progress.
yeah now its just used by everyone to describe something they don't like. wonderful progress.
[editline]19th April 2014[/editline]
like its getting better but its not where it should be by any stretch of the imagination

Okay no offense but this is a stupid way to look at life. It's not "simple" or "easy" for everyone.
just because you "don't care" doesn't mean the word doesnt have power if its being used against you, especially violently.
Yes it does. It's like a bullet hitting a kevlar vest. The bullet has power until the kevlar stops it from doing any serious damage. If someone puts power into a word and you block it that power is null.

Maybe so, but if you don't try to not give it power then it's always going to harm you.

i like how you completely ignored the last part. stop acting like being called slurs doesn't affect you. maybe not immediately but long term things like that wear you down. words have power no matter wether or not you want them to.
i like how you completely ignored the last part. stop acting like being called slurs doesn't affect you. maybe not immediately but long term things like that wear you down. words have power no matter wether or not you want them to.
I like how you start off your response by grasping at straws to point out something irrelevant in order to sound smart or whatever. I already told you that the words have no power in a violent situation. The violence is what has the power. Because the power is located in the fist thats punching you in the fucking face.
And I'm not acting. They seriously don't. If they did I wouldn't use the terminology myself in a joking manner. Furthermore, I've dealt with being called names and shit all my life because of bullies in school. I've grown to learn how not to let words affect me instead of sitting in a corner and crying about it.
yeah that sense of not getting mad at words really played out well here didn't it
Words are offensive
ban words

Intent doesn't matter, who cares if you're supporting trans people
You're using the wrong words and that offends my sensibilities

Yeah, it's like appropriation and context don't even matter.
I don't even know why I'm arguing about the context of the situation being violent or not.
With the actual topic at hand the words were just used in a lighthearted manner by someone who is also transgender. No violence. No hate speech. No slandering. So what's the big fucking deal?
I don't even know why I'm arguing about the context of the situation being violent or not.

because you can't use a slur "lightheartedly". its a slur. it has meaning and a history and even if you think its ok to use it doesn't mean it is.
not to mention we have no idea if the people she was with even appreciated being called trannies

People believe that you should never ever use derogatory slurs or swears no matter what context or situation. Unfortunately this makes the words more powerful when actually said.
because you can't use a slur "lightheartedly". its a slur.
Mah nigga?
People believe that you should never ever use derogatory slurs or swears no matter what context or situation. Unfortunately this makes the words more powerful when actually said.
Very true.
[editline]sadlasd[/editline]
what makes them powerful is the history behind them. people believe you shouldn't use them because they're generally considered "bad words". this doesn't give them power but reinforces that people using them must be assholes for using more vulgar language.
I'd give you a response to this but, by the looks of things, you can't seem to take in an opinion that differs from yours without marking their view as dumb so fuck it I'm not even bothering.
Very true.

how about nobody uses it because its a generally awful word with a bad history
This is something I've been thinking about recently, but the idea that words used that have bad histories, like those said during assaults, battering, bullying and other events of ill nature (in this case "tranny" or "shemale,") should not be said, just leaves some loose ends.
If these words aren't used anymore, great. But what if the horrible people who commit these crimes just end up using the proper terminology? Wouldn't words that were created as ways to describe people without offense then take up the bad history the words "tranny" and "shemale" have? Having a mob beat the crap out of you while calling you "genderfluid" doesn't seem much better than being called a "tranny." Eventually the word is just going to be associated with bad intentions regardless of who's saying it, ignoring context.
The way I try to avoid offending others is to be careful about the words I use as to not offend. But, all conversations have context and sometimes harmful words are used without the intent to harm, and other times non-harmful words can be used to offend. I think the best way to approach someone in conversation when it comes to identifying pronouns is to just ask, because some people might be fine with one word and others not. Words have meaning that is given by both the speaker and the listener, it's two-way communication, so both sides have to try their best to not offend. Since we can't know the events and inner minds of others without speaking it there's bound to be some words that are up in the air, meaning they might offend some but not others.
So, I don't think it's a good idea to just completely stop using certain words, but instead to evaluate the context of the conversation you're in and the people you're conversing with and then decide if the word is acceptable to speak at that time. I think in online communities moderators need to understand the context of each post instead of banning just because of a word used, and from my limited understanding of the OP it seems that Facebook didn't care enough to understand the context of this person's posts.
I'd take the whole SJW/LGBT movement a lot seriously if I knew what point they were trying to drive home.
Everyone I've talked to in feminism/LGBT/SJW has complete off the wall opnions compared to the last person I talked to about it; thus making it impossible for me to support. Much like the 99% movement.

Well, see the main point of the LGBT movement is for us to be treated the same as heterosexuals, and allow us to be married legally.
Feminism is about getting rid of the pay gap between women and men and deconstructing harmful and archaic gender roles.
It's not that hard to understand.

I understand that, but if I go talk to some LGBT/Feminists at my college they'll tell me some other bizzare story about how men are actively working to oppress them and trying to pick up women is wrong.
How can I vote for something that is divided in it's own self?
I mean shit, see the OP of this thread.
We want to not be fucking oppressed anymore, it's not that hard to understand.
Again not saying that isn't some of the goal but when a goal seems to be so decentralized on what people want to the point it's a pure blame game on cisgenders for oppression I have a hard time taking a party seriously.
Would you vote for someone if the party was pro%thing you like%, while at the same time a large majority of the activists were going on some off thing that didn't even fit the main goal?
It's like the 99% I thought the goal was noble and in most part something people should fight for, but the whole movement got bogged down by so many other groups bandwagon'ing and indoctrinating the groups on it I couldn't support them.
I understand that, but if I go talk to some LGBT/Feminists at my college they'll telly me some other bizzare story about how men are actively working to oppress them and trying to pick up women is wrong.

it's literally not divided at all, stop using 1 or 2 people to define an entire movement.
as max said earlier in this thread, its' not my fucking job to change or silence each and every uniformed person under the same label as me, it's your job to be smart enough to fucking ignore them. if you can't even begin to that maybe you should read some wikipedia pages or something.
also chances are they aren't as crazy as you say they are, they're probably just upset and fairly vocal because they're treated worse than men are all over the fucking world. most people would act that way.

referring to someone via the way they might be categorized in porn is quite offensive anyway so yeah i don't think that's relevant

name one time in recorded history where someone who wasn't cis has severely limited somebody else's rights, killed a number of people based on some physical, mental, social trait, power, or whatever. man_hater_girl_power42546 on tumblr saying "fuck cis people" on tumblr doesn't count as oppression btw before you say that.

So someone who wasn't anyone current in the movement is at fault? I am not talking about the past I am talking about what the movement is right now; and that movement is a huge gray area.
I don't really know how you want me to respond, that we should feel bad for mistakes none of us personally made and focus on that? Or look into a future where we can be people; but then why bring up past torment?
I mean shit look at the OP!
I mean I don't even vote against gay marriage; if you want to deal with that shit fine see how tough it is. I don't agree with it, but I don't agree the government free should have any say in it.
tumblr hyperbole is literally worse than any of the oppression faced by GSM's
the tumblr bs is as much saturated in the SJW/LGBT/Feminism movement as the tea partiers/GOP are in the Repblican. It's hard to differentiate unless you are really into it.

I'd compare the whole movement to the Republican party so many subfractures in what is and whom isn't in the true meaning of the party I can't take it seriously.

yeah, probably. you're in a position where you're probably not oppressed at all and won't be fucking killed for how you identify, so you should try to help out those who don't have it as good as you.
if everyone sat on their asses and went "i / my ancestors never did that! not my problem!" everyone would be fucked.

I'd go off about my Irish heritage and the Birtish but eh Irish never had it rough. I'm not debating that and I would like to support a minority that has good ground and a common goal. Again that is in the past, but we need to look at the future and think as others of individuals and not reflect on feeling bad about our pasts and make logical choices for our future.

It's harder than you think when you go to a rally and get told completely different opinions.
Again I am not saying the LGBT movement is terrible or voting to deny it, I'm saying finding a common goal to win my vote is pretty challenging when I see some of the rallies and people in person that want to win my vote.
The whole movement is being saturated by others. Just like the Republican party is with the GOP/Tea Party

the world is the way it is now because of the past. why is there a high percentage of black people in poverty? systematic oppression. why are gay people treated like shit? the terrible idea that ONE MAN, ONE WOMAN ONLY for marriage, terrible upbringing, etc. why are trans people not understood and/or bullied all around the world? thousands of years of upholding the idea of the gender binary, and the terrible concepts of masculinity = men and femininity = women.
trust me, everyone would forget the past if it was that fucking easy, but it's not. try to go into the fucking ghetto and say "hey black people, my government treated you like shit and turned a blind eye when you were being lynched in the streets, but that's all in the past! get over it!" we need to atone for what we've done in the past, regardless if we have or don't have personal ties to it.
instead of going "i don't support/ am iffy about X because of this small group," try to understand why people think and act the way they do. why would some trans woman go "fuck oppressive cis people" on their blog? why would a gay dude get fucking furious when somebody says that gay pride parades are a joke? why would a feminist post on a videogame forum asking why samus in the new smash game has high heels?

christ yes you said it perfectly
and its not even "the past"
you gonna tell me no form of oppression exist against my people, vietnamese people, today? it stems from events like the vietnam war and practically how much the french brutalized us and how they needed their lapdog to save them (US) because they were twiddling their thumbs up their asses; it goes a lot more deeper and subtler as milkandcooki said: systematic oppression, changes the attitudes and perspectives of how people view those races and those views become common and entrenched later on as time comes and also gives birth to stereotypes, etc; and that common hivemind feeling pressures us into tropes. the vietnam war only happened around 40 years ago
apologies that im getting heated up about this but this is a issue i face everyday
Jayne County's first studio single was called "Fuck You" and a follow-up was called "Are you man enough to be a woman."
People are shocked by someone who's transgender and made a career out of saying obscene shit, because she's saying something considered controversial relating to transgenders.
I'm not even going to get into the obvious argument of it's context and the intents of her saying it, as I can tell by the 5 pages that's probably been thrown out by everyone who believes their right to be offended trumps others right to basic free speech.
