The Israeli army has voiced alarm over a fresh jump in the number of suicide cases among it service members since the beginning of the year.
Nineteen Israeli soldiers have put end to own lives this year, following a relative decline brought about in recent years by various programs aimed at stemming suicide in the army, Israel's Ynet news website reported on Tuesday.
The 2010 figure shows a sharp rise in the toll compared with 21 in the whole of 2009. The Israeli army reported 30 suicides in 2000 while there were 35 similar cases in 2005.
The military subsequently launched a training program to help commanders diagnose serious psychological distress among soldiers and offer necessary assistance in time. The program, meanwhile, envisaged reducing the number of administration soldiers who take a personal weapon home.
In the years 2007-2009, there was a fall in the number of suicides to less than 24 in one year -- making this year's figure all the more disturbing for Tel Aviv.
Two officers were convicted of a criminal offense in 2008 for failing to prevent the suicide of a soldier who showed signs of psychological distress.
A mental health officer was tried in a disciplinary trial in connection with the same case for failing to assist the soldier.
The guilt must be overwhelming, I feel sorry for them.
allah akbar
The problem with the IDF is that because its almost 100% conscription all the fuckups and psychos that would normally never be hired end up with guns.
This happens in every army across the world, folk see shit that they wouldn't normally ever see and it fucks em up, and sadly most armies don't give a fuck about you when you're finished your tour, they don't really care as long as you get your job done then you're left to fend for yourself.
Britians just as bad, if not then a hell of a lot worse, our guys get brought home then pretty much told to fuck off, the most they get as psych treatment is a week holiday when they get back from a tour then sent back to the barracks :sigh:

It's not because of guilt, if you read the article you'd see that it's because of the stress. Imagine what it's like having to do anything and everything your commander tells you to do, no matter how hard it is, having to wake up at 5 AM and go to sleep at 11, (there's a minimum of 6 hours of sleep per day). Seeing your family only two days per week, but for new recruits its more like two days per month, endure great physical challenges (I've heard that most combat unit troops have to do a 60km run, and the elites have to do a 80km run, before they finish their training).
I don't even know if I'm ready, since I HATE running, I absolutely despise it, well at least there will be training before that to make it easier, but that just means more running, ugh.
I'm surprised the suicide rate in ALL conscription-based militaries isn't this high.
The IDF noted that in a number of cases in which career soldiers put an end to their own lives, there was no connection to their military service. But the IDF also investigates whether there was any negligence on the part of commanders which had led to suicide.
Heh, well he sounded like a pussy. "mama I don't wanna go to the militury :(".
Just kidding, but aircraft maintenance doesn't sound hard, he should just do his part and get over it. If he's really really stressed about it or is having any psychological problem he can talk to his commander or officer about it and if he thinks there might be a real problem he'll let him see a psychologist, who might let him off of the army.

Well, all he did was fuel planes/ sit on his ass for 6+ hours doing nothing. He said you can't trust anyone and he hates it. He's been regularly seeing a military councilor.

Maybe he should get some medication for paranoia. Hating your job is also not equal to suicidal thoughts (in normal people).
He should be lucky, sounds like one of the easiest jobs you could get in the military, most non-combat positions are still hard to do.
