That's the problem, the current one doesn't. It looks like a misshapen doll arm. Until they can make them look real enough to get out of the uncanny valley, I'll take the artificial looking prosthesis.
atleast theyre trying, and its gonna get better its also the first one of its kind
When I get an arm prosthesis I don't want it to look like a normal arm, I want it to look like I'm able to lift 200 kilos with it.
when?
Wow finally. No one on Facepunch has ever mentioned it. Everyone is a bunch of grimdark apocalyptics with no sense of exponential growth. That was a harsh generalization. I'm sorry.
I'm an avid Transhumanist, its why I'm going in to Biomedical Engineering. [editline]23rd February 2013[/editline]
when?
Yes? What about it?
I think this is awesome for people missing limbs, but why would you replace your working arms with robot arms When will you ever need to punch through a wall?
The way I see it, that sort of shit will be useful for the first people who live on Mars and Shit, lower gravity sure but it's a dangerous environment, if anything falls on someone you want to be able to get it off them quickly.
Something like this ? Yes yes deus ex, but that thing looks god damn sexy [t]http://sphotos-e.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash3/830241_467953353258018_1294584292_o.jpg[/t]
Whoever made those augmentation concepts for that game deserves a god damned award.
Fucking amazing.

I think NASA's smart enough to avoid chopping off limbs and replacing them with tools just because they can
I think this is awesome for people missing limbs, but why would you replace your working arms with robot arms When will you ever need to punch through a wall?
listen if we get to the point where we have some sick ass augmentations like HR, I'd gladly get a limb taken off to get one of those babies. Call me crazy, but this whole transhumanist augmentation thing has always been something that amazes me to no end, and something I've always wanted to try. (before anyone goes crying "you're just an idiot nerde who likes this kind of thing cause of videogames!", I've been interested in this for long before that game ever came out)
I can't recall all the of universities that offer Cybernetics but reading is one. (I do not mean the old term) http://www.reading.ac.uk/Study/Departments/ug-cybernetics.aspx The stuff it out there and with a focused disciplined that gets better streamlined through each progress point, in 20 years things will be different.
Thread music.
Fuck ~Reinstalling~

They're all typically wrapped up in some form in BME courses, whether as part of the topic of prostheses or the like.
Can we make blatant Deus Ex references in transhumanism news articles a banme? I mean, Christ, it was funny the first few times, but now it's just annoying.
We did all ask for this.
"i want my arm to look like im a robot because its cool" i dont know about you, but i would want a real looking arm if i ever got a replacement
Why though? Do you live in a country where people are looked down on for being disabled? Having a robot arm would start so many conversations.

I don't think that robotic limbs will become preferable until they've perfectly emulated normal limbs in every possible way. After all, you're cutting off a perfectly good limb, not to mention all of the other reasons why your puny fleshling organic arm is superior to a metal one.
A new age! I want one
how am i supposed to punch holes in walls if it hurts man!
You couldn't punch a wall with a robot arm either, the shockwave of the impact your arm makes with the wall travels to your spine and hurts you there.
You couldn't punch a wall with a robot arm either, the shockwave of the impact your arm makes with the wall travels to your spine and hurts you there.
I'm almost 100% positive that if we start doling out robotic arms capable of blasting holes in walls we'll be able to build them with a shock absorber.

I just hope that I don't have to cut my limbs just so I could compete with my peers
Fuck google glass, get me some prosthetic eyes with google glass capabilities instead! Fuck yeah that would be awesome!
Don't you mean...prosthetic shades? Still this is fucking incredible. Wonder how long it will be before transhumanism and prosthesis such as these become common-place. Probably not in my lifetime.

Wow, i love technology- All of These awesome break-throughs, in my life-time. whenever an article like this comes up i cant help but think, hey, maybe ill even live to see cyber arms, flying cars and other Sci-fi stuff widely used. feels fucking incredible.

Lol, robo-boobs.
Lol, robo-boobs.
Actully thats just where the arm attaches to the side.

i would never want to replace a perfectly functional limb
i would never want to replace a perfectly functional limb
I would replace my eyes if I could. But only if there was no always-on connection bullshit which always leads to problems in cyberpunk movies/games.
I would replace my eyes if I could. But only if there was no always-on connection bullshit which always leads to problems in cyberpunk movies/games.
My eyes and internal organs are probably the only things I'm willing to augment
i would never want to replace a perfectly functional limb
I am ashamed to say I am probably one of those people who'd replace their left arm or something just because it'd look cool, provided it's as functional or more than my original limb
