Take a look around youuu! At the world we've loved so well! And bid the ageing empire of man, alost. farewell. It may not sound like heaven.. But atleast it isn't hell.. It's a Brave. New. World. With just a handful of men.. We'll start.. We'll start.. ALL OVER AGAIIIIIIIIIN!
I wonder if anything significant that can really change the way we live would happen, i mean there's been times that scientists have predicted pretty catastrophic events and sometimes nothing really happens. Not gonna say it's all crap, but i honestly wouldn't be surprised if any of the flares don't have such a large impact or let alone have any flares. But i wouldn't know, I'm not a scientist.
I expect it'll be like that supervolcano thing. Mentioned. never heard of again.
I expect it'll be like that supervolcano thing. There is only one thing we can do. Blow up the sun.
omg these storms will reverse earth's poles and tear it in half! 2012 was right!!
I think material like that already exists... i doubt it will have much of an effect against the sun though =/
Its called lead.
omg these storms will reverse earth's poles and tear it in half! 2012 was right!!
then what happens?
It's Faraday Cage time, bitches.
I remember a guy in the last thread about this explained that at worst we'd lost all of our satellites. The only flare strong enough to take out ground electronics would probably vaporize stuff as well.
We'll live.
Sure we will. Not sure how good. With TV, lights, internet gone there is no way to get any news. Your car won't start so you can't go anywhere. All the meat being produced will rot and the ones at the stores will fast be looted for all things that is food. Then you will get riots with no way of knowing anything that is going on. This isn't like a rainy day when the thunder comes along and you cut off the power and it feels cozy. This will be like the thunder, but without the switch to turn on again. How will we get food? Without machines to produce the huge amounts of food we eat, the capacity of humans which can be supported with the manual labour farming will be dramatically lower than that with machines. How you going to farm the massive fields in the mid-west? How are you going to fertalize them?

Calm down, we all know the insane consequences if we fail. Maybe that's what he meant in the first place?
Even if it does destroy most stuff, we do not need to re-invent them. But a day without technology will cause chaos. Planes will fall, boats will get lost and all that crap. Also people in hospitals will die...
Much of all electronics in the world is unprotected from an EMP burst. Every running electronic application running during the EMP would be fried. This means, servers containing valuable blueprints for nearly everything, servers containing stock trades, rates and loans would be fried as well severly, if not completely, destroying the financial sector. The wires in your house would begin to send out electric currents as high as they would look like they were sending out sparks, frying them so they can't be used. This means every wire running electricity at the moment of the EMP would be useless. With cars being unable to run, you would begin to have a major problem as a electronic plant worker to replace the wiring. That's not to say you wouldn't even get paid since it's going to take a severe amount of time to re-establish the bank servers containing your pay.

Your car may not start, but older cars aren't difficult to fix.

You won't even be able to predict when an eventual solar flare would occur, since it's going at the speed of light.

We can't stop it, but we can prepare for it. I meant we can stop it from destroying our civilization (if it does happen at all.)
Oh wow this thread is worse than the other one. It's not the end of the world guys.
Oh wow this thread is worse than the other one. It's not the end of the world guys.
None is saying it is?
None is saying it is?
Everyone is saying it's going to be the complete meltdown of electronics. No it won't. That's worst case scenario. They fail to realize that worst case scenario would also include a good chunk of the Earth being fried. We'll lose some things but not something we can't fix in a few weeks/months.

...Wow. What a Beautiful feat of Techno-fear...
In 1989, just a minor flare knocked out electricity to millions of Canadians.
...I'm quite sure that since 20 years, modern day powerlines, fuses, and the likes, have had one hell of a Superconductor update.
...There is no Wall Sreet...
...Is this guy chinese or something? ¬.¬ ...Either way, some of you grouchy gits need to get off your computers and get out in that sun and GET A LIFE anyway. XD Maybe this'll be the world-wide remedy to Computer Addiction, and remember, most forms of Internet, Electricity and Phone are provided by Cable(And Fibre Optics) nowadays. ...And yeah, abit of snow crumbles the british economy... But I doubt a sudden lapse in electricity will. (Just means one FUCKOFF HUGE RESCHEDULE that might actually make the fucking politicians think straight for once.)
It's techno-fear for a good reason. The infrastructure of first world countries depends heavily on electronics. Without those, shit hits the fan. Imagine this: Hospitals have no working equipment aside from basic, manual tools. Refrigerated storage is rendered non-functional, spoiling a great deal of perishable food. Any stored digital information that is unprotected runs the risk of being destroyed, taking everyone that depends on that information alone with it. Ever see people leaving a hurricane zone, especially if it's an evacuation rather than an exodus? Or the aftermath? Looting, roads absolutely clogged with traffic or vehicles, and so on. Imagine that on a state/provice, country, or global scale. That is what people are concerned about, what happens afterwards if it really does happen. Of course, it also stands to reason this is could be hogwash and we have nothing to worry about.
It's not going at the speed of light if it has mass.
Electromagnetic Radiation didn't have mass last time I checked...
We can't stop it, but we can prepare for it. I meant we can stop it from destroying our civilization (if it does happen at all.)
Good luck finding a way to protect every single electronic instrument on this planet without costs making it worse than letting everything go to hell.
I expect it'll be like that supervolcano thing. Mentioned. never heard of again.
Are you trolling or intentionally ignorant
brb tinfoiling my room so my pc doesn't die.
Good luck. In the mean time I'll build myself a series of faraday cages. The solar storms will mainly affect satellites, the internet will still be here. And even if satellites go down, shit will just be rerouted to broadcast via the internet.
...Wow. What a Beautiful feat of Techno-fear... Systems like that are really fucking difficult to update, and do you even have a fucking clue what you're talking about? really? super conducters would make the problem worse, and besides to operate they require sub zero temperatures so they have never been implemented like that. Don't say a word unless you know what you're talking about.
Worst case scenario people, stop whining about the end of the world. Humanity will still be here, and it won't be the end of electronics and the internet if it does happen. We still have blueprints for satellites and rockets, we still know how to set up the internet again, we still can renew every electronic we have. It may take time to reset everything to the way it was, but by that time maybe we will have something new in the works and everything would look differently!
