Rather than saying that the commond cold and flu evolve, would it not be more accurate to say that they're very prone to mutations?
Mutate in a way that increases their ability to survive and reproduce and passing this trait to the next generation. Sounds like evolving to me.

I suppose what I said was more of a preference regarding what to call it, I dislike calling such rapid, yet beneficial changes (to the pathogen) evolution.
Don't think I've ever received antibiotics, I've been under general anaesthesia at the dentist though :v:.
Better to let your own body fight it off if it can imo.
Pretty much Jim Henson's last words.
On-the-fly reprogramming? So, we could have one dose of nanobots, and when we get something particularly nasty, like the plague, we could just download the latest patch? Oh my word, the good that can come of this. And the evil.
It would be pretty cool to have like loads of nanites in your body that essentially rip apart any invading organisms, like an even better immune system, with pincers that can just pop cells and kill them instantly!
WAIT A SECOND, there's a vaccine for the common cold?
Why hasn't anyone told me this.
It is possible to vaccinate against the common cold, but there are so many different strains and loads of new ones pop up every year, its pointless trying to...Just gotta rely on your good old immune system.
I was to a doc because of cold and he goes all like, you have a virus, here's antibiotics.
Antibiotics don't even kill viruses.

They just seem to give them out to keep patients happy

Actually it's so the pharmacies profit. Drugs aren't cheap really.
Antibiotics are a foolsy pill to pop; not only do they increase the chance of breeding superbugs, they ALSO kill many of your good bacteria as well, which can be bad for one's digestive system and other subroutines.
yep
die of sepsis or have an upset stomach
my three siblings don't like upset stomachs
now I'm an only child

unfortunately most people don't know that, and it reduces the length of the infection because humans are absurdly susceptible to the placebo effect

see above
No, that's just silly. Viruses are the obvious answer.
They're called bacteriophages.
They're called bacteriophages.
isn't that more in line with bateria vs bacteira?
isn't that more in line with bateria vs bacteira?
No. That's the name for a group of very distictive virii that specialize in attacking bateria.
whoops biology 101 mistake there
I was thinking of macrophages
They're called bacteriophages.
Yep. The great thing about bacteriophages is they evolve alongside the bacteria.

My doctor told me I had a virus and prescribed codiene for it. I'm not sure how that helped me.

You're not complaining though, are ya?
