"Door Closes to Open Internet, But All May Not Be Lost"

If something like that this were to happen where i'm i'd have to look into the idea of starting my own isp company seriously, just in order to use internet as it's meant to be used w 100mb/s down and 40mb/up without silly restrictions or caps. Here's hoping this remains an American thing.
It's my understanding that the court was actually justified in throwing out the FCC's rules, and it's the FCC's fault for fucking up their regulations.
Under the Telecommunications Act 1996, the US has two different regulatory systems: one for telecommunications services AKA 'common carriers', and one for information services. The FCC can regulate the shit out of the former, but not so much the latter.
In 2002, the FCC formally classified broadband as an information service, meaning they don't have the authority to impose net neutrality rules. They then tried to impose net neutrality rules anyway, and that's why the court struck it down.
From the ruling:
Given that the Commission has chosen to classify broadband providers in a manner that exempts them from treatment as common carriers, the Communications Act expressly prohibits the Commission from nonetheless regulating them as such. Because the Commission has failed to establish that the anti-discrimination and anti-blocking rules do not impose per se common carrier obligations, we vacate those portions of the Open Internet Order.
A lot of campaigners are now calling for the FCC to reclassify broadband as a common carrier, which would give it free reign to enforce net neutrality and slap ISPs around much more than currently. There's currently a White House petition calling for this. However, to do so would be to ignite World War III - or at least that's how the chairman of the National Cable & Telecommunications Association described it. In fact in 2010 the FCC tried to classify parts of broadband as a common carrier service, and the ISPs told them to fuck off and the plan was abandoned.
But I'm not sure what the FCC can do other than reclassify at this point. Chairman Tom Wheeler says they'll continue to fight for net neutrality, but hasn't said how. They could just appeal the ruling, or issue modified regulations but they'll likely just get struck down again if they're still trying to regulate an information service. Of course if they do reclassify, the ISPs could try taking them to court and arguing that they're not common carriers. So maybe the Act needs to amended, but good luck getting that done. It's another case of huge corporations having too much power etc.
There are ways around everything, and there always will be.

You mean "Here's hoping this stops being a thing" right?
Alright, many people, myself included, are very concerned.
So give us a solution, a plan. What do we do?
I seriously hope something happens.
Where are the people who were against SOPA?
Why isn't their outcry being heard now?
We're going to eliminate an open internet for the sake of a short-term return?
Seriously?
I just don't get it.
Do these morons not think about how many industries they're effectively about to destroy for the sake of their monopolistic greed?
I'd probably say that 80% of people employed today depend on the internet working the way it does currently in order to remain employed.

You also have to remember the fact that it's basically elderly people deciding what is right for the modern information age. I would not doubt that they have no idea how it works.
Yet they are deciding what is right and what is wrong.
Im so tired of seeing people get buttfucked. It's like, why can't we live in a sane and fair world, why be a greedy cunt.
I say fuck em, let the retards have this shit planet.

as is the case with many politicians

You realize it's that type of thinking that hurts more in the long run right?
as is the case with many politicians
Just because it's common, doesn't mean it's right.
Would it be possible to set up a peer to peer network instead of relying on internet service providers if every person allowed traffic through their computer? Correct me if I am wrong.

Some of the most successful and richest businessmen & entrepreneurs of the last two decades have depended on the internet working how it does now. Amazon, Facebook, Google, Reddit, Valve, Spotify, Paypal, eBay and practically every other startup in the history of the internet are only what they are because of net neutrality.
All the good ideas would have just got snatched up by the ISPs and remade into crappy 'implemented versions'. Facebook would have become 'Verizon Social' or something equally balls. Spotify would have become 'Verizon Music'.
And the ISPs have the nerve to call their customers pirates?
And the worst thing is, there's nothing to stop them from doing that now. It's a gateway to monopoly and practically kills any creative endeavours that anyone could attempt.
Some people don't want to work for other people. And those people start businesses. I honestly feel like these massive corporations just want everyone to become paid worker drones so they can keep all the money for themselves and never have to deal with the threat of competition.
I honestly hope Google hurries up with Fiber and keeps it entirely neutral, and then people realise the bullshit that Verizon is pulling and jump off.

Only problem is, unless you're lucky enough to live to see colonization of other planets, you're probably never going to leave this "shit" planet. I don't know about you, but if I'm gonna be trapped in a shithole for my entire life, I'm at least going to try and make it less of a shithole. Even if I can only do so in some hilariously small and unimportant way, such as making people feel better through comedy.
The whole reason the assholes have as much control as they do is because people have your attitude and refuse to change things. Although, at this point I honestly think we might be too far gone to actually fix anything.

I'd say the opposite is true.
Computers and the internet have given humanity so much freedom and opened up new avenues of intelligence and I think it's been around too long for anyone to fuck with.
Here's what I mean.
Microsoft, with Gates at the helm, released Windows, a pretty open platform that allowed practically anyone to do anything they wanted with it.
So lots of people did just that - made indie games, made indie artwork, made websites, built businesses, thrived.
Consoles, like Sony's Playstation, are pitched as a convenient alternative to PCs. But their functionality is severely limited. Your also limited to buying titles from the select few companies who make games for them (not so much anymore because they're letting indie's put stuff on the platform).
Imagine if Windows had never existed, and instead all you had was 'Sony Game Console' selling 'AAA blockbuster titles' from shitty Activision-like companies.
If you wanted to learn how to make games and become a game developer in this scenario, you'd have no choice but to work for a Sony-accredited developer which would inevitably suck so utterly terribly.
There'd be no indie games and all you'd ever get game-wise would be Call Of Duty re-hashes and free to play bullshit. We'd literally be stuck 10 years ago with no escape and nothing new being made.
Thankfully Bill Gates hung onto Microsoft just long enough for it to remain open to the current generation of developers. When he left as CEO, Microsoft seemed to attempt to go the way of Apple with their 'Windows 8 Store' which thankfully flopped, because it was clearly obvious that with it, they were trying to shut the platform down (to be more profitable you see).
Now there's lots of cool stuff like Valve, Steam and SteamOS on the Horizon. It'd be absurd for Microsoft to try and shut their platform down at this stage, but knowing corporations, not unlikely.
As for consoles, I do think they're a suckers game. Sure, you can procrastinate with them, but can you do anything useful? Ever? Even if you wanted to? Nope.
I don't really think this is going to do anything. I mean sure some will start cutting out websites but if any of the big ones did that a new company would come along and make a service where it was the same as it is now and basically take all the customers because no one wants a shit service that is making you pay extra to go to Wikipedia.
Welp. Might as well kill my self. The ride is only going to get worse from here.
It's only a matter of time.

so the porn is free then?

Take away my piracy and I will literally go fucking nuts.
Fucking idiot politics that don't understand the internet tamper with something that they should not
you literally should not be allowed to vote on "ISSUES" with the internet if you don't know shit about it.

Oh god please no. It's like these ISP companies don't even know how the internet works/evolves.
I mean, most of the websites in this picture wouldn't even be what they are today if it weren't for net neutrality.
The BBS will rise again.

Splitting up the internet like that image is an exaggeration and would be unlikely to happen, but what ISPs almost certainly would do is make websites with significant traffic pay a fee to avoid being throttled. They argue services such as Netflix and Steam which use up a lot of bandwidth should have to cover the costs of upgrading the network.
"They may take our internet but they will never take away our LAN-Parties!"
At least it seems as if we're heading backwards in some way. With heavily reduced bandwith it surely seems more interesting to share stuff offline then. And besides by reducing the amount you can download you're basically pushing people to do so; moneywise it could be quite accelerating considering that not everyone's rich.
This is the kind of thing that would start a civil war. Not things like health care or gender issues or drug legalization, this right here would provoke an uprising.
Far too many people would be utterly pissed.
You underestimate how much shit people are willing to eat.
It baffles me to no end that this keeps happening.. I mean, they're using definitions and rulings made from years upon years ago to push their agenda. Why is this allowed? I don't understand how ignoring these obvious discrepancies is legal at this level.
Stupid that the major hot topic of these lawmakers is the internet and its neutrality, when there's much bigger fish to fry.
I really want to live in a country that doesn't have a government that seems to do horrible/idiotic things every other five minutes.
AT&T will definitely do this. My bet is they'll be the first

ask yamwmen for that
If I recall correctly, Verizon is against it and won't mess with anybody's internet. Whether or not they keep that promise is unknown, but here's hoping it works out okay.
Verizon, while a total shit company in terms of being a wireless phone network, is actually semi-sensible in the internet business department.
