Intel's Ultra-Thin (<2 mm) Ultrabooks To Use Plastic Cases

This little guy happens to disagree

And I can understand why some people want a thin as possible laptop. Since they're usually lighter, prettier and take less space. If I had a desktop I'd probably be looking for something thin with a long battery as well.
Well enjoy paying out of your arse purely for for a good looking design that gets easily scratched.
Ever heard of ceramic cases?
Ever heard of ceramic cases?
Fuckexpensive compared to scratchproof plastic.
So yeah, I have.
Besides it's easier and cheaper to layer plastic materials than metallic compounds so it only makes sense to make the exterior of laptops and other mobile devices out of plastic.
Keep the metals for the actual "skeleton" of the design only, that's where they're actually useful.
Function >>> Form, fuck this retarded fashion trend.

It's not the trend, it's just you being cheap.

"Oh he's poor he can't afford good design"
Well maybe because I (and many others according to this thread) don't give a damn about having a Fabulous looking device, as long as it's not hot pink with yellow and green dots all over it.
Good job making yourself look like an ass.
Function >>> Form
the truth the whole truth and nothing but the truth.
http://www.asus.com/Notebooks/Superior_Mobility/ASUS_ZENBOOK_UX31E/
That's sexy.
Also wouldn't a metal case be better anyway because it conducts heat a lot better? Your laptop would be one big heatsink. Or just the screen, so you won't burn your lap.
it looks like its going to snap if you touch it at the wrong angle
It's not the trend, it's just you being cheap.
if you choose the right plastic for the case of a device it can undergo a larger elastic strain before permanently deforming compared to a metal
in other words if you drop it it's not gonna get dented
so no, sorry, it's not just about not being able to afford stuff that you apparently can because we're poor
It's not the trend, it's just you being cheap.
Modern plastics are a far more viable material than the brushed metal and glass designer crap. They're also cheaper. Unfortunately they don't fit into Apple's design aesthetic and therefore that of their clones. Drop a plastic android phone on the floor and then an iphone and you'll get what I mean.
Hey Intel, I have an idea.
How about scrapping the whole "thinner is better" idea and for once build a laptop with a keyboard that's actually great and comfortable to use.
Y'know, just an idea.
Well look at the good side of it.
Smaller computers means they have to make hardware smaller, so they spend a lot of money making the components smaller. So in a big machine you'll then have space for more hardware thanks to those components. So their research will benefit us either way.

Surely it would also double up as a faraday cage if the designers were a bit careless, leading to wireless issues?

Generally in the slightly more expensive ones, but the chicklet style keyboard ASUS use in some of their laptops and the Transformers is actually really nice.

IBM/Lenovo had those issues.
Part of the reason they didn't like the idea of laptops with all-out metal case, and instead went with a durable plastic case with titanium "rollcage" skeleton design.

You're honestly making yourself look like a jerk too. Some people like sleek designs, and there is a demand for it. If you can get something functioning fine and looking nice, do it.
One of the trends I don't get.
Ultrabooks.
Ultrabooks are great. They're small, light, and easy to carry around. It's useful at uni and such. I have the HP Folio which works great. The Acer one looks pretty nice as well though.

it's pretty stupid to say that our tastes in design are only what they are because we can't afford something good

They're not saying that people who want nice design are stupid.

I believe that my friend's 4s would definitely agree with you.
I wonder sometimes why people try to defend design over functionality.
When I was back in school, studying, I had taken a very short, but informative, design class. It was a very general design class, and as such, taught us a few things. For example, what I consider the most important of all, is what design IS. Or at least, what I've been taught that design really is.
You see, design is not all about looks. Because then it would just be a synonym for that.
No, design is the fusion of function and looks. Great design allows us to see instantly what an object can do when we use it, and how to use it, while still having a very beautiful look to it.
But that could just be me. Now stop bashing eachother about design.
Ultrabooks in my opinion are a GREAT idea. I don't give two fucks if I can game or not, or hold 10,000 videos. My current laptop is a heavy addition to my bag and starts to fuck with my back after a while. I would much rather carry an ultra-book around over a heavy as fuck notebook.

The thing is, people here often see their needs and wants in a laptop (relatively rugged, semi powerfull) and project it as the required functionality for a well designed laptop.
Whereas those thin ultrabooks tend to full fill a completely different niche and are targeted at a different set of computer users.
They are usually very well designed, they just don't have that raw power.
