Libraries are very important, and even if Google scans all the books, holding a real novel in your hands can never be truly replaced by something else. Well, e-book readers are quite cool but they are expensive and still not like an actual book. And what if your connection goes down?

but that would not be a good reason to spend that kind of money on it imo. It adds nothing to have the real books right there.
I too prefer holding a real book compared to looking at a screen. I don't go to the library much but I do buy my books from a bargain store.
I think that libraries should be funded a bit more, and education should tie in with it. We really need to pull out of Iraq; our soldiers are in danger because of it. Keep some of our boys in Afghanistan, and look - more money for necessary things like libraries and education. Just my opinion.
They shouldn't touch libraries.
honestly i prefer an e-reader to books. I can't get into a comfortable position with a book because i inevitably block a part of a page from view and it's a real pain in the ass
still, libraries are important
I love the library. It's really one of the only places you can get so much knowledge for little to no cost. There's the internet, of course, but some people can't afford it. So there's the library, probably with free internet. Cutting off access to books like encyclopedias, novels, and the like will only end up hurting the country as a whole. I can't believe this subject has even been brought up.
Does anybody else remember what happened during the book burnings?
Libraries are necessary. Those without internet or computer access need the same opportunities as everyone else
I'd hate to see libraries go.
Books too. I hate reading short stories off a screen, and can't even imagine reading an entire novel off of a screen.

you can also bring a book anywhere. sure, you can bring a laptop somewhere, but it's not as small and it will run out of battery before you finish the book.
"Hurr Durr Let's cut out a necessary tool in education and replace it with something useless Hurr"
Can these fuckers get anymore stupid? Yeah, redirect the money to schools? Yeah, and they spend it all on fucking sports and other useless crap that makes the national IQ average drop another 10 points. These fuckers need a damn lesson in reality.
/rant
My school does this too. They're basically completely getting rid of the music program except for fucking choir.
But no need to worry we still sport nearly every fucking sport in existence!
Mabey 80 years down the line libraries as we know them will be obsolete. But not every one in the world can afford home internet access or have it available so I think they're still necessary.
for some reason, I thought I was reading Liberties instead of Libraries.
any way, I starting to find libraries a good place to barrow video games. So I don't think they are a waste.
Where do all of you live if you can get video games and laptops... :sigh:

Less funny looks on the bus too if you have a book instead of a computer.
Hell, I feel like an idiot when I whip out my Gameboy on the bus

All our band instruments are falling apart and crap, but we still have a bike club and fucking curling and other useless crap
How about cutting out some of that 56% of all tax money that goes into defense instead.

Michigan. in my case anyway.
plus all our arts funding seems to go towards the musicals we do each year, but that's not so bad since they're actually good. our sports teams kinda suck
Saw the stupid title and the source "MyFox."
Immediately knew that this article was going to be shit. Really, how is Fox so fucked up? Practically the only reason they're popular and get a good cashflow is because Warner Bros decided to give them channel numbers mostly consisting of low, easy-to-spot ones. The CEO of this company and most of it's employees are idiotic beyond comprehension. Remember when they posted a Obama Speech on their website and they edited out the applauding poorly to support their theory that Obama is trying to make the country Socialist? They barely have any idea what they're talking about, as Socialism isn't that bad at all. Europe is holding up better than us with it. Look where a "Democratic" society allowing hardcore religious idiots and soccer moms to make political decisions.
Wait... Last time I checked there were no hardcore religious idiots or soccer moms in office... And by the way we are not a Democratic society, we (America) are a Republic according to one of our founding fathers (Ben Franklin). I strongly disagree with you on Europe but this isn't the thread.
Anyways, if State government would stop spending we wouldn't have to worry about cutting the essentials, like libraries.
I see no cash returns on schools either. Let's get rid of them too.

Then that time you looked was a long time ago. Sure, they don't hold the top offices anymore, but they hold a large portion of the way down. And they may well return 2012CE.
My library is nice, it's got free internet access, tons of books on every subject and a nice calm (quiet) atmosphere.
I frigging love KPL myself. Loads of SF, of every vintage. Good comics too. And an excellent non-fiction section. DVDs are good, except for the assholes who grope them with peanut butter covered fingers before returning them. The software section leaves something to be desired though.
:foxnews: "Here in FOX news, we believe that don't need no edumacation and so-called "book learnings". Books are for homosexuals and minorites. USA USA USA!" :foxnews:
Honestly, I would say tear down most libraries, and add on to a few current ones to make them much larger in the main cities...
Still quite a few years away from that but it'll come eventually, everything is getting digitalized, Soon we'll have just a couple hard copies of every book, instead of many, But limitless digital copies
Let me be number 2 to say FUCK YOU. I get most of my entertainment and knoledge from those places.
Apparently you don't get enough "knoledge" from libraries.
Balls. How did I miss that?
Anyone ever read Fahrenheit 451?
apparently you don't get enough "knoledge" from libraries.
hurr someone made a typo quick point it out and make them look stupid while i look smart for being the first one to point it out

Same here.
And best of all, if a book isn't at my library, they can have a copy from another library in the program delivered to mine so I can pick it up. It works great.
while I do buy a lot of books, especially my favorite books, I do check out a lot of books from the library, its a great place, nice environment, its also a good place to study and do projects with friends, they should definitely not cut funding to the library
