Remember when you guys used to love Notch and Minecraft :v: ?
Minecraft was a good and promising alpha/beta. But as a final product it's just shit.
Remember when Minecraft was an incredibly promising alpha, not a disappointing final product? He could have done so much with it, but ended up adding a small amount of incredibly mediocre content, and hardly any actual gameplay mechanics to speak of.
I'm not sure what the problem is considering Minecraft is basically going to be in perpetual development You'd have a point if nobody was working on it anymore but people still are
I remember when notch said the minecraft textures were placeholders
But they were. They were eventually made slightly darker.
This is what happens when you get an idea for a really cool thing (computer emulator) and then try to make a game around it. I bet he got really bored once he finished the emulator.
Why would you name your game after hexadecimal gibberish instead of using actual words?
Why would you name your game after hexadecimal gibberish instead of using actual words?
Notch is so lazy he didnt want to think of a name.
I'm not sure what the problem is considering Minecraft is basically going to be in perpetual development You'd have a point if nobody was working on it anymore but people still are
really i'd have no problem with the game if he didn't arbitrarily release it and jack up the price accordingly. it's just, why this particular point in time to consider it released when nothing really came with it that couldn't have just been in another large update
Remember, games that are complete shit generally don't get bought 10 million times.
Yeah no bad games sell a lot of copies, only good games sell a lot, like Diablo 3, or MW3, or Blops 2, or War-Z, or Mass Effect 3.
I have a college degree in Game-Design, and am currently getting a Masters in Game Architecture and Design
God what a waste of time and money.
My teacher's are all 20-30 year industry professionals of all sorts.
I always love hearing that.
Yeah no bad games sell a lot of copies, only good games sell a lot, like Diablo 3, or MW3, or Blops 2, or War-Z, or Mass Effect 3.
Business-wise those are not bad games because they sold well.
Wow, sure is bandwagony in here. Notch decided he didn't want to continue with his endeavour? He's lazy/despicable/stupid/unimaginative/needs to go on a vacation.
Oh man, I really liked how it was shaping up visually (article's screenshot is way old) it was a cool concept, and he was throwing around some interesting ideas, but I was worried it would have no direction, and sure enough he let it shudder to a halt.
its a broken unfinished sandbox environment that can barely even be called a game. nearly all of the promised features weren't put into the game, it's all programmer art because the artist left before any art could be put in (he gave two entirely different reasons for this, which suggests neither are probably accurate), i could go on for days. just because people have fun with a piece of shit doesn't mean its not a piece of shit, it just means they don't recognize good game design and disregard that they got a quarter finished game.
Overstatement, It's a great concept, with an overall decent execution. Not only that, its also a hell of a great game to play multiplayer with friends, there are countless possibilities to be had. From skirmishes to simple exploration or building. I don't think you have played many broken games. Here, let me give you a hand.
God what a waste of time and money. I always love hearing that.
First one is debatable. Second one, you say it as if my statement isn't true. Care to provide some proof for your claim?
Notch made this in a week instead: http://shambles.notch.net/ And honestly it's the first game by notch that I had interest playing.
Now this would be cool if it was expanded on.
Well, if we're going to throw background knowledge around, I have a college degree in Game-Design, and am currently getting a Masters in Game Architecture and Design. My teacher's are all 20-30 year industry professionals of all sorts. What is your definition of good game design? I'm not here to fight, I'm just interested to see what you seem to know that makes you make such strong statements of fact, rather than opinion.
I have the diploma and all that, did an internship at EA and now do contract work for whatever company who's work interests me the most at any time (why I don't come here much :v:), and all people who I know who know about Minecraft in the business can simply square it down to is that it is a good game, no doubt, but it's evident he didn't have a consistent development process which made the end result suffer. Basically it could have been a more solid game if he properly planned it, especially if he didn't add the whole convoluted spell thing, but the fact it got so successful anyway is actually pretty admirable
due to a "creative block"
heh
I still remember very good that on the old site, it stated that if you bought Minecraft that you also gained access to "All future expansions" which made me think that Notch would release different add ons which add whole packs of new content and features. All i ever wanted so far was to go to space in Minecraft and since recently that little dream has come true thanks to the mod community. (http://www.technicpack.net/tekkit)
both got popular. Can't be ~internet hipsters~ if you like something popular
because when a game changes for the worse or has stagnant development, you can't then dislike it, because your opinion has to stay the same!!!!! stupidest fucking argument that keeps getting brought up facepunch's opinion changed because the game and time changed, get over it
Maybe he saw how many other games where like his and thought he wouldn't sell very well?
Notch made this in a week instead: http://shambles.notch.net/ And honestly it's the first game by notch that I had interest playing.
That's really cool. Why doesn't he do more stuff like that? He really needs to get a pseudonym already.
i actually understand game design because i dedicate myself to studying it, and critiquing everything i see and play from an objective perspective. im fully qualified to make that statement, but call that arrogant if you want (ur wrong tho)!! i also followed and played minecraft from back when it started in 09, seeing a lot of potential in the ideas that he said he would put in. none of the things he promised ever made it into minecraft, and the game shipped being largely the same game that it had been for a long time. updates came slowly and nothing substantial was ever added after it really got popular. he didn't know how to handle his own game because he is lazy and a bad game designer.
Knowing about things doesn't qualify you for fucking shit, and broken promised features have nothing to do with the actual core design, Notch is just bad at planning. "Objective perspective" my butt, it's only objective relative to what little you know
if you're legitimately interested in game design then id recommend starting here: http://critical-gaming.com/ this guy owns and explains game design from an objective point of view by using the original Super Mario Brothers to convey theory.
Great, tying everything to know to one game of one genre, that's really going to broaden any aspiring designers horizons isn't it, you're only meant to take that stuff as a guide, not the sole basis for what and what not to do
good i hope he never makes another game, minecraft was the poorest excuse for a finished product ive ever seen and i dont want his shitty work ethic to spawn another terrible game
And yet it took the world by storm, and provided countless of hours of fun.
really i'd have no problem with the game if he didn't arbitrarily release it and jack up the price accordingly. it's just, why this particular point in time to consider it released when nothing really came with it that couldn't have just been in another large update
he "released" it because he wanted an excuse to make it the price he said it was eventually going to be, probably there was never any misinformation about the price increases, everyone knew they were coming eventually
I'm relatively certain I've read this word for word in an image about /v/.
"fun is just a buzzword when you can't actually think of any real reasons as to why the game is good, don't use it." which is stupid as fuck
remember when the majority opinion was that minecraft was a sick game???? the whole hivemind joke stopped being funny a year ago
Apparently games can't change over time, and along with it, popular opinion about said game
"fun is just a buzzword when you can't actually think of any real reasons as to why the game is good, don't use it." which is stupid as fuck
If it's widely regarded "fun" without being specific then something's working right
seems fishy, eh
Better go on a vacation to get some new ideas and refresh.
Can you blame him, if I was him I'd already be on permanent vacation!
good i hope he never makes another game, minecraft was the poorest excuse for a finished product ive ever seen and i dont want his shitty work ethic to spawn another terrible game
i think the real problem was they lacked any real vision as to what minecraft should be and as a result we get the almost half-finished game that really is only fun with tons of mods or on a server with tons of people. the game should have had a way better npc system where you actually would want to work with them and help their survival, instead you just kinda horde them in hovels until their numbers multiply to the point where you just want to murder every god damn one of their squidward nosed-faces. i would have loved if the npcs would have actually made roads between villages and would have expanded their shit. also putting the entire game on java was a dumb idea, it should have been switched to the x-box c+ version along with proper modding support
