And thus, the cars decided our fate in a nanosecond.
What if the car consumes alcohol?
And Taxi driver is soon to be added to the list of occupations ruined by computers.

Exactly what I was thinking. I love advancements in technology as much as the next guy but what about all the jobs we'll lose in the next 10 years to those advancements. Economy sucks.
It probably won't be able to go over the speed limit. That would be a little bit frustrating.
I can't drive 55.
Yes it does.
I have a GPS and I last used it today. Mine, at least, does not and I don't think any do.
The GPS will say "Turn right in -some many- feet" or ".whatever miles" and than you're expected to figure out which lane to get into in order not to miss the turn. It will not tell me "Turn right in -some many feet- in right lane." or anything like that.
-Pull over... PULL OVER!
-I'm afraid I can't do that
What if the car consumes alcohol?
Running on methanol. DUI
But really, this is great news. I don't get it why people are freaking out over this. If it's been thoroughly tested and put through it's paces, with no crashes even in the worst conditions, It's good to go IMO.
If it can be turned on and off easily, it's cool.
If these can drive themselves then auto bomb delivery?
Terrorists will use it to cheat and do multiple "suicide" bombings.
Oh shit... I shouldn't have wrote that. If some politic lunatic see it, this will go down the drain.
And then everything will be like WALL-E.
Ok you're driving along, a moose, deer, comes across the highway, what would the car do? I'm just wondering about wildlife coming across the highway. They can come across the highway in a split second. What would the car do in a situation like that? Swerve or hit it straight on? or?......... I just came home from Winnipeg, on the way I saw numerous foxes. all in about 10 minutes of driving. I got kinda upset. Then 15 minutes later, a moose was lying there. ok, I cried. I felt sorry for the moose. I had never seen something that big, dead. But anyway, what would the car do, any ideas?
I hope self-driving cars will be the norm in two or three decades and it'll become illegal to drive manually (on public roads). I like driving, but it's dangerous as fuck and I'd feel a lot more comfortable knowing that neither I nor other drivers could kill me and everyone around them by making a tiny mistake.
I'm confused by how negative FP's reaction to this is. Even my more technologically illiterate friends think this is awesome.

Smart scientists will study it for months (or possibly years) and find the best solution and program the car to do handle the situation perfectly. Months of research are always better than thinking about it for half a second with tons of adrenaline rushing through your body.
Sweet, now I can fap on a cruise.
The wonders this would do for old people like my Grandparents... <3

Probably react to the special situation in the smartest way possible, breaking full stop or driving around or a mixture with ABS and all that while taking a 1000th of the reaction time of a human.
I passed my driving test today, and THIS is what I come to see?

I don't think this will be an issue. People who hire taxi's either do so because they are:
1.) Not wealthy enough for an expensive car.
2.) In need of a one-time ride, ie. girlfriend throwing you out after pissing on her dog.
3.) Live in a compacted city like NYC where its useless to buy a car and much more common to take a taxi to work.
None of these things will be solved by smart cars, thus a need for Taxi drivers still exhist.
IF ANYTHING, taxi's will become more popular if the taxi companies start using smart cars because customers will feel safer calling for a taxi, and it would be more luxurious im sure.
What I'm really looking forward to is when most of the cars will be that way, highway traffic should be reduced because people won't be braking for no reason.
Does this mean goodbye to ethanol powered cars?

That's what I mean. Taxi/limo companies will buy these over hiring drivers. A robot won't get tired, won't get lost, won't call for directions, doesn't need benefits or salaries, etc. Once this tech becomes cheaper drivers will be replaced. Don't forget about public busses and such either.

I think, at least with this technology, the car is still needing a driver. Someone to turn it on and someone to make sure the car isn't going haywire.
[terminator]In the future, ya they might be person-less.[/terminator]
I can't even handle how my window automatically closes and opens all the way with one push, I'd freak out in one of these
Honestly I wouldn't mind driverless cars as long as I would still be in control of the windows and destination.
As long as there's an easy manual override, like simply being able to overpower it by turning the steering wheel or pressing the pedals, I'd be willing to get a car that drives itself. But there's no way I'd trust a system to be entirely fool proof. Airbus makes their planes with an unbelievable level of automation, and system failures can be a real bitch.
I drive a 4-speed from the 70s most of the time, and love every minute of it. "Driving" in a car that does everything for you would just feel so alien to me.
I remember reading a short apocalypse book where a meteor destroys the earth. In the beginning there were self driven cars that were so advanced the driving age was lowered to 14.
That was the worst fucking book in the world, the US picks rich people to go on a rocket to no where sincr the world is blowi.g up, and two brothet dibshits try to sneak on. One brother gets shot and the other hid in a bag. Then on earth a nerd falls in love with a girl who dies and thr whole book sucked dick

I can safely tell you that within 100 years, 99% of all human jobs will be able to be done by a computer.
The woodcutters of the Netherlands were so angry in the 1700's of the construction of windmills that made it possible to standardize wood for shipbuilding. The windmills used the wind to power saws that cut the wood at a predetermined size, of a quality and speed much improved over human speeds. The woodcutters went on a rampage, making campaigns saying people will be without jobs soon and they will have no money.
As time moves on, there will be newer professions to take over those that disappear.
What I would worry over if I were you, the decision to replace Chinese workers with robots is just a minor sign of things to come.
