I hate every telemarketer other than the ones that say they are from Microsoft.
I usually keep them going for about half an hour, then say I'm on a mac.
They still piss me off though, once had 7 telemarketers phone up between 3-8pm
has a telemarketer ever convinced anyone to buy anything?
They convinced me to buy a hitman to kill them.
Not always. Telemarketers don't know the circumstances, Who Picked Up, Why they hung up (kids tend to pick up and hang up if they don't know the # and parents are not around). If everyone was marked to not be called if they were hung up on, they would talk to far less people. Telemarketers probably don't have bigger call lists then we do, and that's why they continue to call; they have no new numbers to call from the lists provided to them.
God forbid I ever get sent to this hell, but if I ever found myself working as a telemarketer and someone did that I would add them to the DNC list. The chances it isn't someone annoyed by the call are significantly lower than the chances that you're annoying someone that wants to watch Hell's Kitchen in peace.
When I get calls from telemarketers I just mess with them instead.
One called work the other day and I was all "excited" about what he was saying and then for the last part of the deal he had to let his supervisor complete it, so when the supervisor came on I changed tone entirely and was sad because "I just got news this morning that my dad passed away and I tried to tell the other man that now is not the time, but he just kept insisting."
The supervisor got all apologetic and said he'd have a word to the other employee.
I wish I never got that telemarketer block on my phone.
I miss getting calls from random strangers.
I can tell you that we have a high turnover rate where I work. I've probably a dozen of people start and quit shortly after, and I've only been working since the start of this year. I'd hate to think how much more shit telemarketers have to deal with.
What people need to understand is telemarketers aren't taking any pleasure in bothering you, but when you give them shit or make their life harder you can stop; they have to get right back on the phone and call someone else who most likely is going to give them shit.
At times it just feels completely useless, and you just keep hitting a brick wall and you end up hoping that every call you make that the person on the receiving end doesn't pick up, just so you don't get a rude or snide comment. That's what it feels like to work in a call center.
While I agree that it's not right for people to be rude, and personally I'm not rude to anyone who calls, you can't expect people who gets bombarded by these calls all the time to remain calm. In my house, we get more calls from telemarketers, scammers, and consumer interest groups than everyone else combined, and it is absolutely infuriating because you have to drop whatever it is your doing to answer the phone just in case it's something important. So if you get connected to someone who is annoyed it's because you've interrupted them for something that they're most likely not going to be interested in.
I don't have a home phone anymore and I never get calls on my cell except like once a year from this cruise company (???)
when we did get telemarketing calls my dad would just scream or fart into the phone and hang up
i got that same fucking cruise call. did it have a terrifying foghorn sound that sounded like a goddamn transformer at the beginning?
Shouldn't there be a global do-not-call list that all telemarketing companies have to blacklist from their records?

Not to be an asshole though, you guys are the ones calling and terrorizing people in their own house. I know you're doing a job, but at the same time think about getting dozens of calls every fucking day in your house. Even after you politely said no, not interested. It has happened to me. My phone would go off at least 3-5 times a fucking hour. After a while you get pissed, so i started acting like a total asshole about it. Because it was the same people, same companies that i politely asked to stop, even put my number on a do-not-call list. They still continued, so after acting like an asshole and even threatening to go after the company's for harassment and made up some other bullshit they finally stopped. Now i get one or two a week, it is fucking ridiculous to be terrorize in your own home by a fucking phone. I can handle the regular-run-of-the-mill telemarketer that is trying to sell a service or something and I can very easily tell them politely no thank you, but you got some people that just got a hard-on for calling me. Sometimes I think those people got enjoyment from pissing me off.
...Did nobody else catch this?
As soon as I noticed that I speel my DREENK.

True. And that's the other perspective. I can't obviously account for your experiences, but I know and acknowledge that you're not the only one to experience it. Most likely you talk to someone who can't bother to make some note that you don't want to be called, or that somewhere in the chain someone is not doing their job right. Aside from when we call from a list that a company provides us, the only reason I stick with my job is because we do call people most of the time who are signed up with us to do market research, so there is an understanding why we're calling them. Still sometimes even people signed up with us don't expect to get called once everyday.
For my part, whenever someone asks to be taken off our call list, I make it a point to deliver the message to someone who is responsible for taking the number off the database.

Then slowly their possible client base would dry up as everyone in the world found out about it.
Best thing to do is ask them nicely to put you on their do not call list, if they refuse or are being general fuck heads then say you want to elevate this (elevate being a keyword) and then you will speak to their manager. Rinse and repeat until you are on their do not call list, it worked for me as we have a publicly listed number and haven't received a telemarketer call in at least 3 years.
We don't have many telemarketers here in Malaysia, but I recall this story from Tumblr about this Korean girl with the last name Won and her dad's first name starts with U.
So when she calls people it says U Won on the caller ID and people ignore the call because they think it's telemarketers.
I've had a couple of foreigners call and pretend to be Microsoft, I just tell them to go fuck themselves and hang up.
It's like "herp derp ur compootr is virus infecterd and we are gonna turn your pc off if you don't fix it" mmk go get hit by a bus.
What I usually do is spin up a virtual machine (always Windows 2000 or ME) and set up traps (like I'll rename a copy of 42.zip to BANK_DETAILS.zip or set the home page to a shock site). It's like a nerdy version of Home Alone watching them stumble into all of the traps.
...I have way too much time on my hands.
One of those Microsoft scam people called me and said I had a virus on my computer and needed to download a file or whatever to fix it.
I had her on the line for a good half hour, while I was playing solitaire. Just with simple "Uh huh, okay" kinda thing, and then I finally said "Well, it's not letting me open this file because I run Ubuntu"
The noise that came out of that phone was pants-shittingly loud then they hung up.
Similar thing happened to me. Strung them along, until:
"Now sir, what operating system are you running?"
"Linux."
"..." - then they hung-up.
Lol, I got called from some very-indian (Never ever heard a more stereotycal indian accent) guy, who told me I had to download a program from some weird link (Something like mikre.soeft.comput.er), and I just kept saying yeah, yeah, yeah, and then I told them I had to turn off my computer and turn it on again for it to work. Then I walked away from the phone and started playing games for like two hours, when I came back, a very bored indian man asked me if it worked. I said no, sorry, and hung up, while he shouted "WAAIT NO NO I WILL HELP YOUR COMPUTAR"
For some reason, I get calls from my ISP trying to sell me the exact same internet service that I currently have. Can they not see that I already have it? It's goddamn annoying.
Also, I get lots of "I'll give you this magazine for free for a year, only 50€!" -calls that make no sense.
Funny story dealing with telemarketers. My grandmother, instead of signing up for the "Do not call list" would always reply to them "EAT SHIT AND DIE" in Spanish, then hang up on them.
I remember picking up and there was a market research guy that wanted to 'ask some questions', so I told him "I'm sorry I have to go right now" he replied "Yeah, fuck you too buddy"
It's weird for someone you don't know to just call you up and rudely mistreat you over the phone.
You see thats when you try to sell them something
I always ask them to say it slower and sexier.
