some dude has a TF2 backpack worth that much combined http://backpack.tf/id/76561197971691194 how the fuck can a single item be worth that much? jesus christ. I know some people have a lot of money they can blow through, but jesus christ.
Imagine being the guy who got paid though. He's probably rolling around in with real joy
If I was ultra rich I would totally be blowing thousands on virtual shit just because. Why is everyone so against this person spending their money how they want? If you got it, flaunt it!
people buy paintings that don't look like much for millions of dollars. what's so different here? it's as valuable and pricey as whoever wants it to be.
Awesome example, to one person a painting is worth the dosh, to this guy a virtual dog thing is worth all that money.
That might be more than what I make in a year.
it's a little more than what I make in 3.
Ok, I've seen people spend a lot of money on stuff in the circles I move in, but this has got to be some kind of record for one of the most expensive online items sold ever. Granted, in my old days of observing the RWT of in-game goods, I did see somebody buy a Gaia panda hat on eBay for $10k.
except it absolutely has been justified by the fact that someone with the money decided to buy it at that price. goods are worth what is paid for them, and that particular item is worth $38k to someone, presumably with a lot of fucking money to spend.
Yeah, but really games are so fickle, imagine when (or if) Dota 3 is made, that person's investment is not going to mean anything anymore. At least with a real life thing it will always be worth something for some reason, but with video games they are a few lines of code and are locked to that game.
I can see these types of items being like the future of coin and stamp collecting. In a secure item system such as TF2 and Dota, the "misprint" rarities are worth tons, much like how upside down stamps or improperly minted coins go for tons. It's not that crazy, since sales like this have been done many times throughout history.
that is a disgusting waste of money and there is absolutely no way to justify it
I don't know, it could be an investment. If people are stupid enough to buy it once at that price I'm sure it can be bought again for an even higher price in the future.
So Valve already turned DotA 2 into Team Fortress 2, where people spend more time circlejerking over $32,000 virtual items than actually playing the game? Great, and I was just going to get into DotA.
"oh no cosmetical items that doesnt affect gameplay at all and is completely optional to collect and use!"
I don't see why everyone is hating so much. Good for the seller, and good for the person who wanted it that badly.
well, that's gonna come back and bite him in the ass since he probably had to take a loan for it. Some people just have no sense of economy
well, that's gonna come back and bite him in the ass since he probably had to take a loan for it. Some people just have no sense of economy
We'll talk when he sells it for twice as much in a year

I have a job, a house with a mortgage, my own car and people to feed. In these times of crisis when people are losing homes left and right, the thought of someone dropping this much money on an imaginary item in a videogame that'll be obsolete and forgotten in a matter of years just makes me want to lie down in a fetal position and cry.

Me too. That's perfectly normal.

Art is just as useless, it doesn't benefit you in any way. But people buy it because they like it, they attached their own value to it. Just because you think it's pointless doesn't mean other people don't see any value in it.
How did it sell for that much? With the rarity of 1:4 and considering what TF2 items sold for in the past around $3000 should be the limit for it. Maybe $5000 because dota has more players but $38000 sounds unbelievable.

Just because you think it's pointless doesn't mean other people don't see any value in it.
First of all, art is tangible. It is an actual object that exists, not just a strings of ones and zeros in a database that you do not actually own. Second, the actual value of a piece of art is determined by experts and is not just guesswork. The item can be insured based on that value. You try to go to an insurance company to get insurance on your $38,000 imaginary pink wardog in case it gets stolen and they'll call security on your ass. Third, fuck jeah I'm jeallous of some asshole who can drop nearly 40k in cash on bullshit like this. if you're not, you don't understand the value of money.
pop the champagne
its yellow though instead of pink flames so idk how much it would be. infact some ruskie wanted to trade me 150 keys for it but i decided against it.
its yellow though instead of pink flames so idk how much it would be.
Yeah, just noticed it's one of the paintable colours. It's still a nice courier, though, so you can still get dosh

i just saw WHY it was so rare, mines more around like 100-200$. but my fucking nyx dagon item i got for free thanks to valve not sending one of my shirts goes for like $90 and a collar for when the shirt actually came in is also $90. hell if you really wanted to, the actual like clothes' items go for like the same price or more on the marketplace. so you technically get a free shirt and more, downside is that you cant ever get that item back once you use the code.
Third, fuck jeah I'm jeallous of some asshole who can drop nearly 40k in cash on bullshit like this. if you're not, you don't understand the value of money.
I am more jealous of the guy who made 38k just because he was lucky enough to unbox it.
That might be more than what I make in a year.
That was 3,5 times as much I make a year.
That was 3,5 times as much I make a year.
Where do you work a sweat shop? :v:
I don't know, it could be an investment.
It's a virtual item that's value depends on the popularity of the game, no it is not an investment, this guy is either rolling in money or a complete moron.
uhm, you are aware that the game is coming out to korea right? you are aware how many korean dota 1 players are about to fucking do backflips for dota 2 right? once the eastern playerbase gets into the game, i can easily see it being the most played atm. and that means the value will skyrocket.
that is a disgusting waste of money and there is absolutely no way to justify it
Maybe he will find someone else who will pay $38,010 for it, then he would make $10 profit
people buy paintings that don't look like much for millions of dollars. what's so different here? it's as valuable and pricey as whoever wants it to be.
because what gives the painting value is completely different to this
