because what gives the painting value is completely different to this
comparing apples to pears, good job!
because what gives the painting value is completely different to this
you are aware there are collectors out there for things that are just rare or one of a kind right? prime example is how some mismarked dollars that are literally worthless as currency can be worth thousands just because its an error and rare to be circulated anyway.

But at the same time, if you own a Monet painting, you own the only version of it that has ever been made, and ever will be made. You cannot recreate it authentically, because the artist is dead. You can reproduce it, but it won't be the one made by Monet. The age of the painting also comes into it. Tons and tons of factors. The war dog CAN be recreated, it depends if valve want it to be, its rarity is dependent on the whims of valve. Sure there are similarities between the two that go as far as 'things that are rare have value' but that's only scratching the surface of what gives a painting value.

There are multiple other reasons that paintings are different and thus you can't really shoehorn them in, but the fact is that most paintings which sell for millions have their rarity guaranteed by reality, not by the whims of a developer
uhm, you are aware that the game is coming out to korea right? you are aware how many korean dota 1 players are about to fucking do backflips for dota 2 right? once the eastern playerbase gets into the game, i can easily see it being the most played atm. and that means the value will skyrocket.
For now yes, but unless he can find someone else stupid enough to pay over $38,000 for the item then he's wasted his money.
I hate myself forever for selling my golden roshan for only 1000$, I was so low on money I just had to sell it. I think its worth over 6k now. :(

It still wouldn't pay my college bill. :v:
Actually iirc there have been only 2 on the market in the past month or so and the cheaper one was being sold for 11.000$
Are you kidding me? And I thought that it couldn't get crazier than tf2.
no one really trades at all in games since you can report them for doing so instead of playing the game. anyway i wonder what my unusual wardog would go for :
I'll give you a flaming Christmas tree for it.
First of all, art is tangible. It is an actual object that exists, not just a strings of ones and zeros in a database that you do not actually own. Second, the actual value of a piece of art is determined by experts and is not just guesswork. The item can be insured based on that value. You try to go to an insurance company to get insurance on your $38,000 imaginary pink wardog in case it gets stolen and they'll call security on your ass. Third, fuck jeah I'm jeallous of some asshole who can drop nearly 40k in cash on bullshit like this. if you're not, you don't understand the value of money.
I could do much the same, if I did play DoTA to that extent, and really I have the money to be doing so if I could. If you're jealous that you couldn't do the same as this fellow, because 38k is a fair bit of clink, that's also understandable. But saying that people don't understand the value of money when they do something like this is a fallacy. Everybody's entitled to the occasional impulse purchase. Some people have more money to spend on impulses than others. Everybody's also entitled to spend their money howe'er they like. And there's nothing in the whole wide world as is going to change that. Your point on actual art is perfectly valid and understandable, but real life art has been around for longer than online goods were ever a thing. So strictly it's more of a very big grey area as it is now. But please don't make the mistake of associating large sums of cash spent on something as not understanding the value of money.

This is why nobody respects or likes rich people these days.
This is why nobody respects or likes rich people these days.
Not all rich people spend their money purely on themselves. Don't tar all rich people with the same brush, thankee kindly. Lots of them try to give to the less fortunate.
On the other hand, must feel fucking great to get $38,000 for that crap.
lol people trying to justify spending more than two years worth of full time minimum wage pay on literally nothing
According to a post in oify, a guy sold it for 40$. Then he found out it sold for 38k.
So Valve already turned DotA 2 into Team Fortress 2, where people spend more time circlejerking over $32,000 virtual items than actually playing the game? Great, and I was just going to get into DotA.
lmao you barely see unusual couriers
You could buy an ultralight aircraft and take the lessons to fly it for that kind of money. He bought a pink virtual dog.

Your War Dog may be unusual, but it's just a normal War Dog which can still be acquired in many different chests. This article is talking about the Defense 2 War Dog, which could only be (rarely) found in a crate that was discontinued very early in DotA 2's lifespan, which has a very rare unusual effect. There is probably not another one like it in the entire game. It's literally the rarest thing in DotA. are you guys sure that this isn't a hoax
i like how he explained how it was worth a college fund, without actually explaining why its worth a college fund
That's not a Defense 3 War Dog, that's fake.
Defense 2, you mean.
Defense 2, you mean.
Yeah, sorry.
"This combination makes it extremely rare, and one of a kind. There are only 4 other known pink ethereal flame wardogs."
one of a kind but there's 4 others? something fishy is going on here.
There are only 4 other known pink ethereal flame wardogs
this quote looks like it was made up by a tv show writer for a sitcom.
I will laugh my dick off if someone hacks the buyer and erases the item
