For some reason I don't think Avatar 2 will come out in December 2017 and Disney already knows this. There is no way they would want to destroy a franchise that they have invested money into (Avatar Land in Disney's Animal Kingdom).
I expect to hear an announcement of Avatar 2 being pushed back soon.
I still like the "name a character and quote a line from the movie" challenge
Can't do it with Avatar
I'm trying to and I keep just picturing different shots but instead of saying anything, the speaking character just kinda makes a confused and slightly disgusted face and shrugs.
Avatar sold itself off its visual, it was literally just "Look how gorgeous this is!" But really, those visuals are nothing spectacular these days, and it's only going to get worse in 2017, a full eight years after the release of the original. Unless suddenly the movie and theaters start using VR technology to literally thrust you in to the movie itself, it will have nothing going for it. It rode a wave of hype that it can't really get back because what Avatar did is now just sorta the expectation.
avatar is the highest grossing film ever made
doesn't mean its any less shit
I wouldn't really call Avatar a rip off of Pocahontas, it's just a standard white saviour film like Dances with Wolves or The Last Samurai except it's in space with blue people.

Look at new Star Trek movies for example, they are more action movies then movies about "exploring strange new worlds, and seeking new life and civilizations". I would say Avatar is my favorite Star Trek movie.
don't forget the catchphrases!
"HE SAID THE THING!!"
I swear Bones McDick was my least favorite character by 30 mins in
That's its one defining trait other than "pocahantas in space" and "blue cat people"
Honestly I saw it more as a Dances With Wolves rip-off more than Pocahontas.

Hey, just remember. Dances with Wolves came out first. Just sayin'.
It's clever when it comes to marketing to do it in December.. all of the toys will be out well in advance of the film, and parents who have kids that like the movies will buy them because there will be next to none left after release.
because the tickets were like 25$ a pop
What theater do you go to? The tickets everywhere that I know of were the normal price. Yeah 3D cost more, but it costs a couple of dollars more for anything.
What I liked about Avatar is how Cameron wasn't afraid to slow down the movie to show the world they created; Pandora, its flora and fauna and the Navi culture. Yeah, it's a bit like a documentary about blue Indians living in African jungle on another planet, but for me it was a refreshing change in the sci-fi genre.

One thing about it is that it's very watchable. Put aside how generic and cliche checklist compliant the plot is. It's just well directed. It's a solid movie. It's has nothing that makes it truly great, and is nowhere on, let alone near the top, of my "you must watch this movie list", but I enjoyed it nonetheless. The 3D is extremely well done and incredibly immersive.
I remember noticing how when they were coming out of cryo, the focus on the 3D shifted down the length of the ship, and it did it at the same time that I would have. There's practically no jump out of the screen 3D gimmicks. It felt absolutely natural.
A lot of people like to criticize Avatar for being unoriginal, and that its success is only based on visuals, hype and marketing. But can people honestly say Force Awakens is much different, and that it truly is the greatest thing they ever saw ? The marketing and the hype was out of this world, and from what I heard there are a lot of story elements taken directly from New Hope.

Doesn't stop Force Awakens from being a much better movie.

I can honestly say without a shadow of a doubt that TFA is one of my favorite films of all time. The movie took bits and pieces from all 3 of the originals, but anyone who says it's a "remake" of A New Hope is an idiot. It pays tribute to the originals while still being able to tell its own story

The Force Awakens didn't make me vomit uncontrollably like Avatar did though.

He's right. Dances with wolves was more similar imo
Never understood why Avatar did well. Really sad the new film has been delayed, but at least we get Rogue One this September.

True but people are just more familiar with Pocahontas since it's a Disney cartoon and chances are everyone and their grandmother has seen it.
I don't get the hate for Avatar. It was a nice movie. I think people just like to be contrarian and hate on the popular stuff to pretend they have better taste and higher standards than others.

I think it's all that blue alien sex that quashes their standards..
The movie was a piece of art.

yes i can "truly say" that
the force awakens has heart
avatar is a disgusting cash grab
Avatar wouldve been better if the humans had won. seriously, scifi gunships against space indians on pterosaurs, how does one even lose that fight to the aliens?
IIRC according to supplementary material Earth has turned into a shithole and the stuff they were trying to mine would've helped fix that, plus the Colonel clearly honestly gave a shit about his men and would've gotten Jake his legs back, so screw the traitor who sold out his species for some blue alien pussy. Avatar 2 should begin with the resurrected/cloned Quaritch exterminatusing the hippie paradise
Hey, just remember. Dances with Wolves came out first. Just sayin'.
I think the last samurai is the best version of this story
The original release was on the 40th Anniversary of A New Hope though. The original date was on purpose.
I rather get a good movie that isn't rushed to shit than a cute nod to release dates but hey that's just me
also on the what-is-avatar thing, Fern Gully had a lot of parallels too. Ultimately it was a HUGE show of force with new technology and proved 3D movies could be done pretty well (though it still fell into some of the garbage "lmao you flinched at a thing flying straight into your face!" gimmick kinda stuff). It wasn't supposed to have a be-all-end-all story, In michael bay terms, it was an explosion-porn movie, but for raw special FX quality, and they did well

I felt that Colonel was the weakest part of the entire movie, he was just "evil" for the sake of it. He had no background story except the scar thing, big deal. He was a bad ass mofo, but underdeveloped IMO.
Also you ask why do they lose a fight against primitive aliens ? Because of the sheer number of them. There were probably few hundred to 1000 people there against probably few hundred thousand if not millions of aliens, with carbon enhanced bones and stuff, that are very hard to kill. Not to mention the whole connection with the planet, environmental and "planet will fight back" stuff, which is a central theme of the film.
Plus they were not an army sent to invade the planet/moon, but mercenaries that should protect the companies facilities. It was never a war or invasion, just a bunch of local conflicts and stuff. Avatar 2 might be about human invasion of Pandora, or more precisely, colonization of America :v:
I liked Colonel Quaritch for the sole reason that he reminded me of Chip Hazzard from Small Soldiers

Oh damn, when I first saw him I knew he looked familiar for some reason, but never knew why :v:
