Where is there even left to take the genre these days? I think pure FPS have pretty much long since reached their potential, and there isn't really anywhere to go without depending on story or branching out to other genres.
It's been about 5-6 years since Episode 2 came out. Half-Life 2 came out 6 years after Half-Life 1 did.
If all we get is an Episode 3 that's roughly the same size as the other episodes, I will be several disappointed. If we get both an Episode 3 and Half-Life 3, I will be satisfied.
It's not about quantity, it's about quality.
Having sex once a week is much more enjoyable than having sex twice a day.
Every day Half Life 3 doesn't come out, that's more and more fans who were not around long enough to finish the story arc.
Honestly if I were on my deathbed right now, I'd be thinking "god damn it, I never got married to my fiancee or had kids. I never got to see the end of Game of Thrones or Breaking Bad. They never finished up The X-Files and I never got to find out who the fuck the GMan is in Half Life"

Speak for yourself :v:
i want episode 3, they stated episode 3, i've been expecting episode 3, give me episode 3
the problem i have is that since they've improved on source so much, they've dramatically changed their production pipeline and episode 3 most likely -wont- look like the rest of the hl2 series
so you've got hl and its spinoffs which look like hl,
hl2 and the episodics (save 3) which look like hl2 and the episodics
and when hl2 ep3 comes out, it's going to look like l4d
great.
and when hl2 ep3 comes out, it's going to look like l4d
great.
so.. it'll look better..?
HL3 is dead to me now.
Yeah, to be honest I don't really care for HL3. Maybe it because HL/HL2 were games that you had to experience at launch to fully appreciate how much new stuff they brought to the table, but neither game really interested me that much. I'd rather Valve come out with a new Day of Defeat than HL3

Valve's been so under wraps with their work lately, who's to say they're not bringing a plethora of new things to the table with the new Half-Life game? Source has been needing some revamps, maybe they're doing just that to prepare for the next installment.
Of course, I could be overhyping myself...but it's still a valid theory.

No offense, but you must suck at sex.
Why can't you have quality sex, twice a day?
It's a stillborn, it's impossible to get this much hype and not disappoint fans who waited years for the game.
watch
it revolutionizes gaming like HL1 and HL2 did, its called game of the decade, like hl2 did

he means you'll appreciate it more if you do it less
or something
it will look like a 2008 game in 2016
think about that
Are you really getting to the point of judging a Valve's games by graphics?
or it trips on itself, spaghetti and shit flies everywhere
dnf 2: back in action
lol
except DNF was insanely different
how do people still say this shit
yeah ive judged their graphical infidelity for the past 4 years now im not stopping until it stops being a brush-based engine with tools from the stone age
the damned thing feels like its gonna crumble in on itself anytime you edit something
Source engine hasn't been the same source engine since day one.. They have modified it signifantly and if they didn't update it it'll still be up to terms to modern engines. It's extremely well made.
And yeah okay I can agree that it's going to be a bit outdated but haven't you heard of Souce Engine 2?
because what if the people at valve are lying
shocker i know
you cant lie if you havent said a single goddamn thing at all
because what if the people at valve are lying
shocker i know
that or i just like saying dnf because its famous for taking forever, i could say prey or some other dev-hell game, but its not as extreme
valve doesn't have to change engines every 2 years so they've got that going for them
Haven't Valve said they're not working on Episode 3 because nobody really knows what to do? That's why Gabe jokes about it all the time, it's not just him taunting the fanbase, Valve literally aren't sure on how to make the next part of the Half-Life franchise. Maybe it's just them covering it up, I don't know, but I doubt Episode 3 will be out until they give us way more information on Source 2.

Being brush based gives it amazing versatility, even if it is a pain for newcomers to get into.
Aside from that, there's a strong rumour that Valve are working on a Source 2.

Pretty sure Valve confirmed they were working on Source 2.
Gabe confirmed Source Engine 2.
Its likely to be that Half-Life will be the opening title for the new engine. However, a new Half-Life game has not be confirmed.
HL3 is dead to me now.
Right ok sure, so when it comes out you're not going to be excited in the least? Wow you're so cool. You're going to flip your shit just like the rest of us are.
I don't understand why people are saying the HL series is "dead" and blame it on hype. There has been no hype. Valve has barely even been transparent enough to confirm its existence and a new engine to boot. Unless I missed something, everything else has been made up by third party news sites or people getting their own damn selves worked up about nothing. Anyone who ever gave a damn about Valve should know to be skeptical of non-official news and that speculating about whatever Valve is doing is a waste of time.
I'm sorry, complaining about whatever the upcoming Half Life project is on the basis of hype is pretty bitchy. I'm not saying you still have to be interested if you ever were, but don't act like you've been strung along and let down. Besides that, you'll probably all buy it when it comes out anyway.

The one thing that spawned all this hype was that at some point Valve said there was going to be an Episode 3. And at some point they said there was going to be a Half-Life 3. That's all you need. If Valve had never said that these things were going to happen, there would be no hype.
And it's hard not to be disappointed when we're still waiting for the once-promised conclusion to a game that came out nearly 10 years ago. Not even an often-promised conclusion. Just once. So we kept waiting while they seemed to forget. But I have a hard time believing Valve will let the 10th anniversary come and go next year without SOME kind of special announcement or even a release. If they do, I'll probably just start ignoring the Half-Life series as much as they have.
At this rate I expect Left 4 Dead 3 to come out sooner.
E3 is on monday
there is still hope...

I don't really have a problem with how long the game is taking, but boy if they announced a Left 4 Dead 3 before Episode 3...

Yeah, except HL2 came out 6 years after HL1. It's been 6 years and we've yet to hear anything about the game.

I don't think Valve have a booth at this year's E3.
I believe there is a lot more to the Half-life universe than we've been shown in the last few games. Valve just wants to present that experience in the best way they can possibly create. Which, unfortunately means we have to wait a long time.
They obviously realized the wasted potential on making the next part of Half-life in the source engine and in the episodic type of medium. So, they start brain-storming and thinking "Oh! That is something we've got to have in the next project! Oh but the source engine can't handle that... hmm... guess we have to make a new engine. This is gonna take a while..."
I would put money down that when Valve finally shows their top secret project, everyone will flip their lids. It's gonna be awesome.
Also, I wouldn't be surprised if the first multiplayer game to be released on Source Engine 2 is Day of Defeat. I think I heard Gabe mention that somewhere in some video...

yeah but for HL3/ep3 to be DNF it'd have to be raped by a studio change / engine change shit 4 times and broken promises and orphan tears
its just a bad imo considering all of the neglect
watch

This is my prediction aswell, I'm pretty sure what happened was Episode 3 grew out of it's proportions and became too ambitious for an episodic release, so there was an internal decision
to scrap the whole thing and start working on an entire new Half-Life game that will conclude the Episode and start a whole new story (perhaps).
I'm sure that during the early development of EP3, Gabe saw the possibility for something bigger, and they're now aiming to revolutionize the genre again like they did with HL1 and HL2.
All of this tech they've utilized on their games post-EP2 has been experimentation for HL3 I bet.
