I said it before in the thread about that bug and lll say it again. Quit being so paranoid you're not in danger every time you use steam.

Well that was just lame. Wouldn't be surprised if they didn't have anything to do with it at all and it was just Steam having some problems that needed to be fixed.
Oh well, let's just pretend it didn't happen and move on.

well it's been awhile and still not fixed
Well that was rather unspectacular.
well it's been awhile and still not fixed
It was first posted about eight months ago and there's been no instances of it being used on anyone. You've been bringing it up over and over again since then saying you won't play source games until it's fixed. Don't you think that's a little extreme?
I don't really see the point in doing something like this but hurray, good job, I guess they did the thing.

um
Steam was down?
You would think that, after witnessing people receive decades long prison sentences and/or fines up to 6 digits (or higher) for this sort of thing, people would learn that doing this is a silly idea.
Hope that the relevant alphabet agencies can step in and put a stop to the DDoS tantrums (and hopefully, apprehend the idiots responsible).

steamID's are numeric identifiers that identify what account is currently playing a server to the server and steam, people can't hijack your entire account just by logging in or playing a source game. the most they can do is pretend to be you on a server, and while that's a bug that still needs to be patched it's not going to end your world.
EXE writing is still a thing but it's so hard to do and the most they can do is write an exe to your disk and the chances of that even happening are in the several hundred thousand if not million. there have been no recrded cases of it happening. just don't run will_fart_for_money.exe ok?

this will never happen. alphabet agencies typically only deal with HUGE scale long-term DDoS attacks that cause six-figure costs. it's usually local authority cyber-crime units, and even then that's only if they've got a means of tracing the perpetrator. the usage of a botnet in turn creates a pretty big safety net for people who do this kind of thing.
"phantom squad"
wow so edgy so cool
their leader is Axel Shadowblade, who is a teen boy with 6 pack abs and muscles and is smart and hot and has cool hair and has a shadow blood blade that does 999999 damage and cant be blocked and u cant kill him he's already dead

what dwarden is saying is that the increasing interconnectivity of all technology means that botnets are only going to get larger and worse as anything capable of sending packets and capable of being host to a RAT is going to become a player in the DDoS game. basically how a botnet works is a large amount of interconnected machines are infected with a remote-access trojan and then their data usage is utilized to flood the target with packets, effectively choking the target with traffic.
dwarden is completely correct in that pretty much every device, every single piece of technology sold on this earth has holes. it just matters when they're found and by who. as we've seen in recent years every major company has in some way left backdoors, intentionally or not, in their devices.
it won't be long until shit like amazon echo's are used for DDoS attacks, i guarantee you.
[editline]3rd November 2016[/editline]
statistically, a member of facepunch who has read my post is currently part of a botnet and is not even aware of it. i might be part of a botnet right now and unaware of it.
one is all collective, tungsten body glowing mind.

statistically? you have some weird statistics. IoT vulnerabilities are big but there have and still are many other avenues that arent botnets for firing off DDoS attacks.
And no, the amazon echo will never be used for DDoS attacks because it can be updated

lmfao how bad at this do you have to be
I didn't even know there was a DDOS today because I got home from class, watched a bit of YouTube on my PS4, and logged in just fine
can't even ddos what a bunch of failures
i was using the echo as an example b/c i saw it on the amazon storefront, im sorry for shooting at an easy target
also im just trying to translate whatever the fuck he was saying
Awww that's adorable.
yeah
i find it hard to feel even indifferent about this because it's cute
All I can say is try harder and get caught. Pretty sure all these botnet DDoS cunts get pretty harsh legal action taken eventually. Members of Poodlecorp, Lizardsquad etc have been arrested and charged IIRC.
Just natural selection is taking its course.
Steam gets ddos'd and their servers handle it just fine while EA can't even run their login servers correctly without ddos

well so you are saying so long as i dont run a .exe I can play zombie games on csgo and l4d
Using Steam almost the entire day and all I noticed was that my friends were not receiving some messages I sent them and also a very short time of 'maintenance mode', which prevented me using some Steam services for like what ? An hour ?
At first I thought it was just some internal problem they had to fix, I didn't even think it could be ddos since it didn't seem so effective lol

Ooh, is this why I had trouble adding 1 new friend yesterday while everything else worked?
