Fighting games aren't shallow. Progress comes from actually getting good at a game instead of your character getting better. They are made to be competitive so they don't work as well outside of multiplayer and training mode.
i'm just gonna say that if you aren't thick skinned enough to play with other people in a game like dota where individual skills feeds a lot into whether or not you win or lose, then i suggest you don't play at all. it's a game meant for playing with other people, you're not gonna get the same experience just sitting there in a game filled with bots.
I don't really care. I've got nearly 600 hours in Fallout: New Vegas, and my steam library is 90% single player. I'm fine with playing against bots, prefer it matter of fact, and the stats on my steam account attest to that. I don't care about being skillful or having the best KDR, I just care about having fun, and if cooping with my GF against bots is more fun than playing against other people then I couldn't care less about playing against other people.
Besides, if my short stint in LoL is anything to go by, I dont want the normal experience. So if playing with bots changes that, fuck yeah.
Oh, and fuck their excuses with SFxT. Look at this shit:
This is the final round of a competitive tournament. If you're wondering why there are no characters onscreen and the camera has glitched upside-down at the top of the world, it's because Megaman just used his fly attack to fly off the screen after getting a few hits on his opponent to win by timeout because he's now invincible.
Infinite combos are impossible in this game, but not because of good design. It's because when you get 99 hits in a row, the game will drop the victim into an unhittable knockdown state on the 100th hit automatically. With that being said, the 99 hit light jab combo that consists of repeatedly pushing the same button is not technically an infinite combo. The character playing Kuro is literally counting his light jabs until he can get 98 and land a heavy attack to get more damage in. Good job, Capcom! This is the worst fighter of all time by design. You can even buy gems that increase your character's health or speed for DLC. What kind of shit is that?
You just described what makes fighters appealing for people who play em' and what doesn't for people who don't.
If only "pros" understood that..
I installed dota and tried to play against people and they all told me I was a piece of shit and didn't know anything
it was true
the interface was too confusing for me to find a tutorial if there is one
The way to make your game newbie friendly isn't making the game easier or changing the gameplay, it's giving your players a decent fucking tutorial
It's very true, but you realy should give it another try, just ignore the jerks, play and learn.
I might not be the best at the game but I could help if you want..
About the tutorial: there isn't one yet, but there'll be. They'll probably wait until all heroes are in to add it.
Wish more companies had this attitude.....like blizzard for instance.
Honestly, WoW itself is suffering from this EXACT problem. Just like what capcom said. Veteran players NEVER embrace "new" players. When I first did cataclysm heroics, I had no idea what the fuck I was doing. A good and sensible player should have calmly pointed out what I was doing wrong, and told me what I should do to correct it. Instead, I got yelled at CONSTANTLY for not knowing all the boss fights by heart, even though I warned them I was new to it. I got kicked out of more groups during those couple of months than I can count.
Just my personal experience in a matter like this.
I'm absolutely terrible at DotA-like games and am afraid to play them because of the super-pro-MLG -players that think everyone else is inferior to them.
An example: I was in League of Legends beta and decided to try it out. I didn't really know what to do and insults started flooding in. I scuffed them and kept fucking up in an attempt to learn everything myself.
Then my sister called me and told me she was in a car accident and needed a ride from the forest-road the crash happened on. I told what happened and hat I need to go to my teammates and holy shite they went insane on me. I ruined their game and was the worst person ever. I've never touched games like that since.
Strange. Once I was playing LoL, and knowing how people will go batshit insane if I just leave because I was too fucking bored of it already, I lied saying that my mom is in Hospital and it's time for me to visit her. EVERYONE (!) in my team said "Oh, okay, good luck! Cya!". I was stunned by their kindness, so I told them the truth of my lies and continued to play.
Personally I have no problems with encouraging new players as long as it doesn't go the way TF2 has where the higher skilled players are largely ignored. Hell, I welcome encouraging new players as long as it isn't done at the expense of higher skilled players.

"SFxT is the worst fighter of all time by design."
And if by some chance you missed that sentence, but you couldn't tell by the video or the fact that I was talking about a 99 hit jab combo and a forced timeout win by way of flying offscreen, then I have no idea what kind of fighters you play.
FADC = Focus attack dash cancel (SFIV)
Using a focus attack (consumes 2 meter) and dashing out of it to try restore your character's ability to use a followup attack. Basic example is Ryu using the shoryuken attack (the big uppercut that launches the opponent in the air). Normally, he'd follow them up in the air and because he's airborne and still playing the animation he can't do anything. If you, however, use a FADC immediately after connecting with the shoryuken, they go up in the air and you remain on the floor doing the focus attack (focus attacks can cancel any attack). Then, you can dash out of it and catch them in midair as they fall with any of his fireball attacks, or his ultra.
DHC = Delayed hyper combo (MvC)
This is my favorite fighter. In MvC you have a team of three fighters that can tag in and out. After you complete an ultra attack, you can cancel it by doing the ultra input for the next character in your team's queue. After the input, your character will jump off screen and the next character will appear on screen performing his ultra.
plinking = Priority linking (SFIV only..? Not sure)
Plinking is kind of hard to explain. Basically if you were to push light attack, then almost immediately after, while still holding light attack, push medium attack, the game will read those inputs as L -> L + M rather than what you would expect to be just L + M. It's some kind of input glitch that allows you to do followup combos with extra security. Sometimes it's hard to link L -> L -> L + M, but with plinking, if you land it correctly you'll do L -> (plink here) L -> L + M, and even if you mess up, you'll still get L -> L + M which will allow you to continue your combo off the L + M even though you messed up the input and should've dropped the combo.

Either you are very lucky or we're playing very different games because every community I can think of pales when compared to WoW in terms of the amount of dicks.
I bought Marvel vs Capcom 3 and at the start had no idea what I was doing. I just looked up the combos for the characters and started putting them together and experimenting. Turns out I do that 'DHC' thing all the time, I would just not give it a fancy name.

I played WoW for about a year and only ever encountered the odd asshole.
For some reason I've never expected someone from a huge company like Capcom to ever say "scrub".
...what?
Ooh, I get to explain things!
Plinking, or p-linking, is when you tap two buttons in rapid succession, kinda like a piano roll but faster. It makes it easier to chain hits, as the game recognized both button presses, but picks the one that'll link. At least, I think that's how that works.
FADC stands for Focus Attack Dash Cancel. In Street Fighter IV and its variants, you can use a focus attack to cancel out of a move, and then dash-cancel out of the focus attack, which allows you to almost immediately perform another move. Integral to most of the good combos in the game.
DHC stands for Delayed Hyper Combo. In Marvel vs. Capcom 2, 3, and maybe 1, you can cancel a Hyper Combo attack with another character's Hyper Combo attack, which switches them out. This provides a much safer way of switching out characters in the game, as the Hyper Combo provides protection against any incoming attacks while you switch.
Make sense now?

I even quoted the wrong post. Fuck it, I'm out.
i tried playing Dota. i died once and got banned instantly :S
It's like the SMNC forums
Reminds me of UT3's loading screen that says something along the lines of "You was a n00b once too"

Chaos I have no idea what realm you are/were playing, but I think I need to pack my shit and move to it.

I did go for a medium population server. Scarlet Crusade if I remember right. It's been a few months since I played though.
My RL friend who is really good at street fighter and marvel vs capcom never teaches me how to play.
We'll have a group of friends over passing the controller back and forth, winner gets to keep playing and the looser has to give it up. the friend that i mentioned earlier never looses the controller and every time its my turn i get my ass stomped and loose almost immediately to him. a few times he gave me like, 20 seconds to mess around with the controls and then he just pile drove me into the ground.
Come to think of it he's kind of a dick in fighter games.
In my personal opinion the whole "Pros hating Newbies" thing is more prevalent in Console games than it is on PC Gaming because I've ran into more "Elitist" pricks playing on Consoles rather than PCs. But with PC it really depends on what game(or mod) you're playing, for instance I played the indie game, "A Path Beyond" and that game's community was so extremely hostile to new players I just stopped playing it.
But generally yeah, it's a major problem no matter what platform you play on and most game developers don't do much to stop it.

I think he's making shit up to make hardcore gamers feel self conscious and then post on forums "I KNOW HOW TO PLINK, FADC, AND DHC! I DO IT ALL FUCKING DAY YOU FAGGOT ASSMUNCHING MOTHER-SHITTER"

I played WoW from vanilla to Cataclysm and I can safely say that WoW's community is nowhere near the level of, say, Halo or DotA. Then again, WoW has a huge population, so you're bound to get a mix of pretty much everyone, and it depends on the server and guild too. Obviously the higher-end guilds (especially pvp-oriented ones) are going to have a lot of elitists.
