Mediafire and Filefront are also pretty huge. You can't call Coke the biggest soft drink company because it has large competitors such as Pepsi.
Well, they were apparently also laundering money among other things.
So if this gets revoked does that mean megaupload will sue the American government for a VAST compensation?
I just want megaupload back so that icefilms on xbmc will work again
Hi, we're the Federal government, we're above the law and we can do anything we want and if you say otherwise you will be punished severely. Fed in a nutshell.
This is all about control, they want to make it look like they need more control over the internet by painting this guy to be a bad guy.
Why hasn't Youtube been taken down then? There are hundreds of full length movies on Youtube and even more music.
Taking down Youtube wouldn't help them, it would just make a very large number of people angry at them which is what they want to avoid. Taking down Megaupload was a good strategic move on their part because it wasn't as big as Youtube, but big enough to make a blip on the news and give them ammunition for their internet control agenda.
The real test will come when an honest trial for Kim Dotcom is held and then we'll see how many of the Fed's claims hold up outside of their own courts. Had they succeeded in getting Kim Dotcom out of New Zealand they would have put him in a Kangaroo court, painted him as an evil criminal mastermind and locked him away for the rest of his life.
IF their claims do hold up, there's still the matter of the way the Fed went about taking him into custody, it was sloppy, arrogant and disrespectful to the New Zealand government, you don't just barge into another country and seize it's citizens then go "This guy is bad ok bye" and I'm glad New Zealand had the guts to call em out on it.
Why did they choose Megaupload out of all the thousands of file sharing websites?
They started becoming "mainstream"? It was only a couple of months ago that Universal took down their videos off YouTube, and Megaupload sued them in return.
Edit: Couple of months? More like December 2011.

Kim Dotcom is safe under New Zealand laws. The FBI went through two judges who said hand over the data, before hitting New Zealands top judge, who also said hand over the data, then they finally agreed.
