This Laser Reportedly Can Instantly, Remotely Scan You For Drugs or Explosives

another device for TSA to handle
I wonder how this ends up to
Then lock yourself in your home if you don't want people to "invade" your space in a public area.
This is a dumb, lazy, and irresponsible view if you have ANY respect for your privacy, in "public" space or not.
Better a little laser scan than some hairy dude looking at my junk and taking pictures.
You can opt to get groped by the TSA then. Fuck that shit. I'll take a laser being shot at me over someone touching me.
Is no one reading? I don't give a shit about this in the airports, it's the other uses of a portable particle detector that bother me. Jesus.
So because it's not someone sticking their fingers into you, it's less invasive? I'm being probed either way, it's not less invasive, it's just less obvious.
not everyone wants to be touched by other people
not everyone wants to be touched by other people
At least not until they buy me dinner.
I think this device is just way too invasive, and they can pretty much put one on every corner of the street and scan for any illegal substances. Hello police state!
Also, imagine that I legally smoke some weed here in The Netherlands and then take a trip to the USA a few hours later. Instant trouble.
It wouldn't scan your chemical makeup for THC, silly.
yeah the only thing this does is scan the outside of your person, lasers are not x-rays, this is not a big fucking deal(though I honestly doubt its effectiveness because the source is awful)
not everyone wants to be touched by other people
So by saying no to a form of security i'm saying yes to the other? Uh, no.
I'm saying both methods are bad and this one is JUST as invasive. I don't think they have any right to check my body with a machine like this unless I consent to it. the potential for this machine is huge and I honestly am so baffled by some of you just going "oh well at least i'm not getting touched, progress". No, this isn't progress in anyway where we actually get closer to fixing the problem.

I hope the source is wrong because
“The small, inconspicuous machine is attached to a computer running a program that will show the information in real time, from trace amounts of cocaine on your dollar bills to gunpowder residue on your shoes. Forget trying to sneak a bottle of water past security—they will be able to tell what you had for breakfast in an instant while you're walking down the hallway.”
wow! sensationalist bullshit in SH! have you ever taken a fucking physics class(or maybe it's just due to you being a brony)? this is described as a laser based device and a laser based device isn't going to scan the innards of anything

"I HOPE THIS IS WRONG" must mean "WOW I BOUGHT INTO THIS SHIT".
Fuck sakes. Having a fear of an oppresive government in this time period is not a difficult thought, and with technology moving the way it is, the arm chair experts of FP really don't know a lot. Neither do i, but at least I admit it.

Word, I severely dislike the idea of this. Sure, stick in airports, that's fine, but don't stick this shit on the street or anywhere else that isn't some sort of place of national security/importance. I don't like the idea of some box hooked up to a cop whose probably bored enough to arrest a person just because they may have handled something that isn't in their possession anymore.
Yeah, this will definitely be abused somewhere down the line.

the detection of the spectroscopy signature of C4/prohibited substances would not be enough for an arrest in the US, but probable cause for a search(assuming this top-layer scan is not considered a search, but that'd have to be settled in the SCOTUS).

you don't need to be an expert to understand basic physics you tool!!
I shouldn't be liable to have my entire body searched at any second for anything the moment I step off my own property which is just about impossible for the majority of the populace: job, groceries, etc.

Thus why I added "reportedly" in the title.
A laser being pointed at you in an airport isn't anything close to "invading peoples privacy"
All over the US they have radiation and chemical detectors in public spaces..i don't see the big freaking deal. They're not going to spend all the money on putting these things up to catch a bunch of kids with weed. Which is what most of you are clearly worried about....
It is a freaking laser and people are being overly dramatic.

That's not the point, the point is the fact it's going to be abused way farther then what was probably originally intended. Besides, I definitely don't like the fact it allows for any government police/security official to search without visual proof and serious evidence someone was involved in anything.
It may not be felt now, but there's definitely something bad brewing here, no matter what anyone says. Shit like this leads to the negative eventually for the general populace in major cities, and it won't be very pretty.

What the fuck is up with this logic? If somebody walks past one of these and it detects explosives on them, a search is ordered, and an explosive device is found that was going to be used by them in a terrorist attack or some really angsty kid to kill people at his school, etc, etc, would you be complaining? I don't think I would be.
If I walked past the damn thing, odds are nothing would happen, and I'd walk on never having known that I was even scanned in the first place (and if I did... so what? I don't care - I'm clean, I have nothing to worry about). If something weird did happen and it said I had explosives on me (even though I didn't) I'd, for the sake of not getting shot dead, or freaking everybody out, consent to a deeper scan (but I wouldn't want people sticking their fingers up my butt - x-ray me, use an ultrasound scanner on me or something, but I really don't want somebody feeling around in my colon for bombs to be honest. I'd feel slightly violated by that kind of a search).
How the fuck is a tool used to detect drugs or bombs going to be 'abused' in any way, shape or form? Oh no, terrorist attacks were stopped! Oh woe is us, our freedoms are being violated!
This is cool but i'm imagining police driving down a high street and just shining it at everyone and finding what drugs they can find because arresting someone for having a bit of weed is a lot easier than stopping a burglary or something

Imagine if they installed these things into festival entrances
no fun allowed

Well it has to penetrate things to a certain degree.
Otherwise this device is only going to catch this guy:

A stoner that hates all "breaches of security" because they may or may not affect his ability to smoke weed.
Never seen that before!
You know what else can do all that?

The GT-200 or Sniffex.
This amazing antenna screwed onto nothing but a plastic box can sense anything without any source of power. You can also place in "cards" to sense different molecules.
It's so amazing that countless third-world countries have bought thousands of them. Fucking idiots.

Stereotype harder.
I just think it's funny that the land of the free has just about the least freedom of any civilized country on this planet.
Oh those deadly stoners, they've gotta be on the look out for the cops cause of all those dead bodies those stoners smoked.
stoners are dangerous right? they deserve to be fucked over right?
Some of them are.. I was at this stoners house and he pulled out a butterfly knife scared the shit out of me then I'm like "hey dude can I have that knife?" and he is like sure.
snbip
What if you place the explosives / drugs in tinfoil bags?
Explosives go for it, drugs fuck off

Oh my, now the police will know I secretly eat cornflakes for breakfast :(
Look I don't think you understand how this works. It's like a spectrometer, not some magic laser that can see what you have in your stomach
They're not going to arrest you for trace amounts of stuff. Everyone has trace amounts of pretty much everything on them. If you have gunpowder residue on your shoes in any large amount there is probably a reason for concern. If you've been to a club or something, the drug residue on you would be much less than if you actually had a bag of the stuff on you. They're not going to arrest everyone this thing beeps at, it is to tell them who to investigate, the same way a policeman would investigate you if you had blood on your clothes. By your logic, the eyes of a policeman are an invasion of your privacy...
Can't wait until it mistakes a bottle of Coca-Cola for Anthrax, Chalk for Cocaine and a Lego Brick for C4.
