Yeah but he wasn't blind.
Shotguns tend to be rather big and conspicuous things.
Yeah but he wasn't blind.

I know, I'd probably see it too if I was drunk. I'm just saying that's probably why he didn't decide to back the fuck off.
There are a number of fallacies I must address.
1. A shotgun at close range doesn't leave many options for nonlethal assault. Either you won't put enough pellets on target to stop the attack, or they are going to die. Doesn't matter where you hit them. If you peg them in the leg you are virtually guaranteed to shred a major artery, causing them to bleed out.
There is simply no way for an ambulance to get there fast enough to save anyone from that kind of wound.
2. How do you know she didn't aim for the arm/leg? Does the article specify?
3. Lots of people give cops shit after a fatal shooting saying stuff like "Why didn't you shoot them in the legs/arms/etc? Why didn't you shoot the gun out of their hand?" You simply can't expect anyone, regardless of their training to do so. It is a little known fact, but the concept of shoot to maim does not actually exist within law enforcement. When a police officer fires his/her gun with anything other than a special nonlethal round they are shooting to kill. That is what they're expected to do. They are professionals and if they are not expected to make that decision in that kind of scenario I don't know how you can realistically expect a civilian to do so.
4. If she did aim for the arm or the leg, that's not actually a good thing. This goes back to my earlier statement that if you're going to use a gun in your self-defense, be ready to actually take a life. That is why the police are expected to shoot to kill or not shoot at all.
And before you ask, I know this because I'm trying to get into law enforcement in the distant future. I have read books written by police officers, I have done ride-alongs, I have talked to active and retired officers, I have taken classes in administration of justice and a paralegal class.
So whatever you respond don't dare claim I don't know what I'm talking about.
I'm not too sure about the first one.
ALTHOUGH
I never brought up the police "shot to maim" thing. I am in full aggreeance. It's difficult enough for me as is to fire at a larger mass with a handgun, more or less a smaller mass like a leg.
I know in this case it's sort of futile, but as I stated before, she was in the right, I just would hope she would have tried to cripple, not kill. I am all for killing in the name of self preservation. Although, I no doubt expect it to be a massive burden on the soul. I honestly say it should be a last resort. which I am uncertain or not if it was in this case.
fuck, at least you actually address points
unlike this moron.
Yes, because blowing off his legs is better than killing him instantly. His life will be much better in a wheel chair.

What stress could you possibly have been under that even comes close to the stress a woman at home by herself feels while someone is breaking in?
I've had a person threaten me with guns once before. It is a scary experience, but I still had my thought processes. Now, I wasn't in the same position as that women, she was in a more terrified state.
now, have you?

Oh in that case, yes, the alcohol would have no doubt impaired his judgment.
Also Trotsky, sorry if I came off rude earlier. While it is true that you didn't quite make the shoot to maim argument (in a way you did in a way you didn't) that's just an argument I've heard a lot in regard to police shootings. Sometimes I ramble off and try to cover avenues that the argument can go in.
Sort of like heading it off at the pass if you will.
If it hasn't been posted yet, here's the full, uninterrupted 911 call. It paints a clearer picture. I heard this a few days ago on the radio and was floored.

Ugh...
As if you didn't get the message before.
oh shut up, the reporting in this article is so skeleton.
The title of the thread is also a tad misleading.
You don't fucking seem to understand this ONE basic concept:
There is IN FACT a middle ground. It's not kill or be killed. You can wound people. And I don't think severely wounded people are a threat.
So the idea you're getting at is that people for home defense should use Riot ammo (rubber tipped bullets, beanbag rounds etc)?
Well...TBH that's not a bad idea for non-lethal home protection if it's just the one person. If it's a group though HOHO get out the buckshot.

No, but now that you mention it...
I don't think armies invade homes too often.
What? HE THREW A TABLE AND SHE SHOT HIM!
As terrible as it is, she had every right to shoot him.
oh shut up, the reporting in this article is so skeleton.
And yet I understood it from the beginning...
The only misleading thing is the title, but who bothers with those anyways.

What I'm thinking is that perhaps she DID aim to cripple, seeing as she even said that she didn't want to kill him and positively freaked after she did. But I don't think old ladies would have a very good aim when they're so panicked and and terrified. But who knows? At the end of the day, one criminal is dead who probably would not be had he not been drunk, and a woman will regret what she did the rest of her life most likely. But I think the woman should not be seen as a murderer because of her actions. She did what any average, panicked person would (Personally, I would've shot at the man too if I was placed into that situation, but probably wouldn't pay too much attention to where I was shooting). Her goal was to stop him and that meant to shoot him.
I feel sorry for her, honestly. :(

No, I agreed before, you just nitpicked my point.
Generally speaking you shouldn't hold it against someone if they change their opinion in your favor.
