Really they are closing down servers for games that didn't sell well/not really popular online.
They'd never touch a Battlefield game (except for Modern Combat which probably didn't do well).

I mistook Modern Combat for Battlefield 2 five years ago. One of the worst games I have ever played.

I could never get Mercs 2 working for co-op anyway. Just a bunch of connection failures.

1942 runs solely off of dedicated servers, if I remember correctly, and isn't hooked up to EA's system at all (You don't need an account, just entering a username in the options menu). That's why games like Medal of Honor: Allied Assault are still online and going.
EA couldn't shut down 1942 even if they wanted to.

The master server is still hosted by EA so they can shut the ingame browser down.

BF2 is one of the most popular PC games right now. Why the fuck would they shut it down?
They're only closing down servers that no-one plays anymore. Like who the fuck would be playing BF2:MC on the Xbox in 2010. That game was shit when it came out in 2005.

Okay, so now that EA is regularly taking down servers for games that AREN'T sports titles, I hope people really stand up and fight this colossal bullshit. LOTR: Conquest and Mercenaries 2 are fairly recent games, and shutting down their servers is just plain inexcusable.
lol I LOVED mercs 2 on PC. I never really did co-op (everyone I played with was a douche) but sad to see it go.
