It would be too complex to even begin with, I'm sure it would be a field day, but realistically there's just no way they could sue so many people in one sitting.
I wonder how many users Demonoid were ONLY downloading, not uploading? Probably hundreds of millions worldwide, and 20+ million in the USA. Doesn't seem logical.
Oh shit guys piracy's been defeated forever what are we gonna do
pirate bay is still up and about, just like any other major source people are simply too resourceful for this to have any effect
Theaters provide a significantly different experience from what can be gained by torrenting. The impact sales is reflected in DVDs, rental services, and services like Netflix, for which piracy provides an equivalent experience at zero cost.
DVDs are just pocket money after theatrical release has ended. Netflix is quite bad if you live outside US. Almost everything media related is quite bad outside US. And rental services, pff. Want money? Make a unified media service like steam where I can buy or maybe rent movies as soon as theatrical release ends. Movies are really hard to buy if you don't want to get a physical version at a store.
Wonder if they're going to go after the end users of Demonoid?
That's like going after all the ants in the planet isn't it?
This is terrible. Demonoid has so much decent content such as their massive collection of *legitimate* ebooks. The forums are great too. Why can't the US back the fuck off out of other nations business?
That's like going after all the ants in the planet isn't it?
Ants on a plane!!! Anyway, but yeah it pretty much is.
this day started off so good, with nasa doing awesome space shit, to source 2.0. But then the US order came and fucked it all up.
USA will never EVER gonna stop acting like this.
Especially when 70% of the nation are either utterly apathetic of politics or patriots who don't dare question the government.
Demonoid busted by US order
Umm, no it wasn't. Nowhere in the article does it claim the US ordered the takedown. Nice title. Now there's three pages of people raging against the US government for something the Ukranian government did on its own.
What part of the last copyright bullshit pushed by people in the US did you miss exactly?
What part of "The US Didn't actually have anything to do with this" did YOU miss? What turnip truck did you fall off of? You're condemning the entire USA for something a few people are doing, and over an issue they had no direct involvement in. This was mostly the Ukrainian government's decision.
How about better prices instead of $40 for a single fucking movie?
vote with your wallet and don't buy the product and don't pirate because then you're just stealing
goddammit why did it have to be the one site I use
oh no
Well fuck....
Oh man oh god oh man oh god oh man oh god
Yeah, just let illegal activities continue and then bitch when the government stops the illegal activities.
Misleading headline. Not once is a direct "order" mentioned in the article. Our general foreign policy is to encourage other countries to step up enforcement, and we've made the Ukraine aware of that. Just because they choose to hit this site to appease us, doesn't mean we "bullied" them into doing it. Sensationalist Headlines indeed. People need to stop twisting every fucking site shutdown into this broader, idiotic narrative of the U.S. being an evil corporate run entity that is the puppetmaster behind every anti-piracy measure taken. Other countries are helping us willingly. We're not the only country with lawmakers who're corrupt and a justice system with no respect for net neutrality.
What would you want? The government to acknowledge that "There are criminals out there and we can stop them but we won't because of some neckbeard pro-piracy argument"?
Good thing I downloaded a fucking shit load of roms- I mean err... Linux Distros before it went down. Can't find that stuff on piratebay anymore, I mean...you can. Shame though demonoid always had more obscure things I could never find seeded on piratebay

if these movie companies wanna make more money maybe they should stop making the same rehashed bullshit every year and actually put in the time and effort for a movie worth watching / buying [editline]6th August 2012[/editline] y'know, instead of chipping away at a constantly expanding piracy network
What would you want? The government to acknowledge that "There are criminals out there and we can stop them but we won't because of some neckbeard pro-piracy argument"?
you can't really stop pirates, short of placing an incorruptible police officer in every man, woman and child's room. it's one of two things for them; just business as usual with good reasons to go against the anti-piracy laws, or a game where finding genius ways of bypassing laws and barriers results in underground admiration and a sense of pride. not a whole lot of people who aren't pirates are pro-piracy. they're just pro-privacy.
Despite general opinion that Demonoid did not contravene Ukranian law, especially since it blocked all Ukranian IP addresses to avoid upsetting the locals, the site still attracted the attention of the authorities there. That, according to a source in the country’s government, is all down to the United States getting involved. A source inside the Interior Ministry has informed Kommersant that the raid on Demonoid was timed to coincide with the very first trip of Deputy Prime Minister Valery Khoroshkovsky‘s trip to the United States. On the agenda: copyright infringement. Ukraine had promised the United States that it would improve its attitude and efforts towards enforcing copyright and no doubt its Western partner will be very pleased indeed that Demonoid’s head has been presented on a platter.
Just leaving this here for all the "what does the US have to do with this?" folks
How about better prices instead of $40 for a single fucking movie?
Not sure what region of your ass you grabbed that number from. New DVDs are usually around $20 (even for bluray) and typically include special features and the ability to watch them as many times as you want. That's a justifiable price increase of about 10 dollars from the cost of viewing it in theaters.
Like I stated above, it's a worrying thought, but considering the amount of users and stuff here, I doubt it, but in a hopeful way.
They can still sue a shit ton of people. See: http://www.wired.com/threatlevel/2011/03/bittorrent/
They can still sue a shit ton of people. See: http://www.wired.com/threatlevel/2011/03/bittorrent/
It will be interesting to see how this pans out, though I do find it disgusting that some of these lawsuits are for profit, rather than doing the right thing. Chances are good they'll go after the "big" people on the site; the people who download and upload a LOT more than the average person.
I sure as hell hope they don't target their users. I have an account on there with something like 400mb downloaded. I have no clue what I downloaded since it's been years since I've accessed the site.
I had an account there, too. It'd be almost impossible to target all the users, but I'm pretty sure a lot of people thought it'd be impossible for Demonoid to get shut down. Maybe we'll get lucky and Demonoid will find a way to move itself over to another country that's less willing to appease the US, but I doubt it.
