I'm pretty sure most people here have an account on there, I tried shutting mine down recently because I haven't used it in a long time, especially since you do stupid things as a kid. Plus it was just in case a situation like this ever happened, kind of bs they never let you shut down your account, instead they only made you inactive. With the nun movie thing though, I read the article and it sounded more like a sting than anything else.
This is quite sad, demonoid was my number one place to find abandonware and all those small ad games and such that were made back when I was a kid.
Guess the nostalgic days are over...
I was wondering why my linux distros had all stopped seeding through the Demonoid tracker.
It will be up before the end of the month.
USA are gonna pick on the wrong country some day and it's going to end bad.
I can't wait.
That's just sick.
I sure as hell never wish anything bad for another country. Just because our government is full of idiots, doesn't mean that the millions of people who live here agree with everything they do.
I wonder how many users Demonoid were ONLY downloading, not uploading? Probably hundreds of millions worldwide, and 20+ million in the USA. Doesn't seem logical.
I'm pretty sure that Demonoid and other private/semi-private torrent trackers use a ratio system, to enforce seeding for a healthy torrent
You have a ratio of how much you download vs how much you upload (if your upload is more than your download, then your ratio is larger than 0) and if it dips under a certain point (I think like 0.5) you're banned or something
I had an account there, too. It'd be almost impossible to target all the users, but I'm pretty sure a lot of people thought it'd be impossible for Demonoid to get shut down. Maybe we'll get lucky and Demonoid will find a way to move itself over to another country that's less willing to appease the US, but I doubt it.
They'll probably go after the big fish, the large uploaders and downloaders.
Well since that's the case, this is going to get really really really messy.

You get a warning at .5 and you get banned from downloading at .3, until you seed the files you already downloaded until you get a healthy ratio again, IIRC.
EDIT: I could be thinking of another torrent site, though.
Demonoid was great for linux distros but I moved to usenet for my distros
i can't believe anyone even responds to the letters sent by these bullshit lawyers
what are they gonna do, get 5200 people locked up for downloading a film if they don't pay up?
Holy tinfoil hat batman.
Why should any government allow piracy? It doesn't benefit commerce or the government itself, there's only downsides.
Some people like to sample something before they purchase it. Digital resources are infinite, so nothing is being 'taken away' when someone pirates something, per say. Products may gain support from people who'd simply wished to sample them before hand, and those who download for keeps only take away from the company if they had payed the service for the download, (which isn't ever the case).
How government bodies and companies battle piracy is usually unethical and ineffective too, and some of those methods of negating it only screw over the consumer.
I'm just going to go against most people here and say that piracy isn't bad, and companies should only use it as a reason to better themselves. I've never bought a game or digital album with any sort of digital rights management, and I never will.
Well you must not have many games.
I've never bought a game or digital album with any sort of digital rights management, and I never will.
I hope you also didn't pirate any of them, otherwise you're part of the problem why there is DRM in the first place.
Well you must not have many games.
Because I haven't bought them doesn't mean I don't have them.

The reason behind digital rights management is companies which are too stupid to realize that piracy can't be stopped, and use horrible tactics to attempt to simply slow it. Ones that don't work. If not the fault of the companies, then it is an infinite ring of causes.

Yes, one of the largest, most powerful countries in the world is going to lose and 'end badly' to another country. This makes perfect sense and you are a very logical, intelligent, perceptive individual.

That's a poor excuse to pirate something you don't own.

Dunno, if everyone was doing like him I don't think there would be many DRMs around.
Dunno, if everyone was doing like him I don't think there would be many DRMs around.
Yeah, instead there would be no AAA on PCs around.
Yeah, instead there would be no AAA on PCs around.
Because AAA = DRM?
That's a poor excuse to pirate something you don't own.
It's valid, most rights management systems are game breaking / software breaking anyway. Cracks just make peoples' life easier in that aspect. If it isn't a moral excuse for piracy, then maybe it is a realistic and practical one.
Nevermind, I got your point. (My automerge!)

You could still buy it and then download a crack.
Fuck. I uploaded a lot to Demonoid because I could actually seed.
Yeah, instead there would be no AAA on PCs around.
Or some or most companies would give up on Digital Rights Management systems? (And I'm not accounting for those who pirate something simply to have it regardless of the state of the product)

I suppose, though I'd not want to support whoever uses Digital Rights Management, even if that is a flimsy moral argument to justify what I do.
Sure would be nice for anti-west country to host all these servers, They could probably get an economic boost
I really hope they don't go after the users. I admit to using Demonoid for a game before considering how my Disc Drive is busted and I wanted to reinstall Fallout 3 (Retail edition).
I got this quote from one of the comments on the op's link, he makes some pretty good points, so I'm pretty sure any of us who has an account there won't have to worry as much.
They most likely can't go after the users. Just having an account there, even if your have a high upload ratio, isn't proof of illegal downloads.
Unless Demonoid kept logs on the server of your activity on the trackers (which I can't see it doing since it would require 100's of TB's of storage, possibly more) there is nothing they can prove. Demonoid also served up legal torrents as well, including Linux distros, opensource software/music/movies, as well as many MANY other things (such as HD Wallpaper packs, etc). Any kind of legal action taken against users without proof of WHAT they downloaded will get axed before it even makes it to court.
Also, with the recent rulings in the US that an IP Address no longer is a legal representation of a person, they don't have a leg to stand on if they were to go after users. -Anonymous
um when did u last win a war
Generally the Ukraine, Poland and other ex-soviet union countries which aren't exactly "on their feet" would gladly kiss the ass of America.
Innovation in terms of annoying shit like DRM, yeah. How would piracy facilitate any positive innovation from developers? I'm genuinely curious about why you'd think that.
Just look at Steam.
Well shit. That ruined my day.
