Fine, let's put it in less offensive terms. We shouldn't be punished for using less gas. Same point.
And yet you are. That diesel Mondeo may get 65 to a gallon on the highway, but good luck getting a 0-60 time not on galactic timescales out of it.
No you're right, I just realised we don't drive everywhere in the UK.
Question? Do you drive all across America? If not then that point is null and void.
I'm sure there are people in the UK who go on long commutes, but there are also many people in the US who do the same. My Dad, for instance, spent 7 years commuting back and forth between Philadelphia, PA and NYC, New York, just to get to and come home from work. That's nearly 200 miles a day, and close to 1,400 miles in just a week. If he worked every single day for those seven years, commuting back and forth would land him with a distance traveled of over 500,000 miles. Like him, there are many people who commute great distances just to get to school, work, and home.
Also,
America's infrastructure isn't built like the UK. We rely on vehicles and not on public transit. I commute 50 miles a day for work. I doubt many people do that in the UK.

No, by that logic, European gas should be the same cheap-ass $3.50 that you yanks whine about paying.
Not everyone pays 3.50 a gallon here, Some people pay 100 a week for gas, 100 dollars they don't have.
No, by that logic, European gas should be the same cheap-ass $3.50 that you yanks whine about paying.
first dont call us yanks were americans and second stop offending america
do you know people fight overseas terrorism and for our freedoms? with osama bin landin dead we almost killed all terrorists so please stop being so hateful towards america
Not everyone pays 3.50 a gallon here, Some people pay 100 a week for gas, 100 dollars they don't have.
Well, that same person driving that same distance in Europe would be paying $200 a week for gas. Just 'cause we have other options doesn't mean that our gas should be twice the fuckin' price is what I'm getting at. 3.50 per gallon is nothing.
Well, that same person driving that same distance in Europe would be paying $200 a week for gas. Just 'cause we have other options doesn't mean that our gas should be twice the fuckin' price is what I'm getting at. 3.50 per gallon is nothing.
It is to me, try traveling from south to north Florida every week for a living, that's 700 a month in gas, which is impossible to pay.
Isn't most of that taxes though?
In regards to UK prices that is.
... like for your healthcare and stuff??
........... that you guys are always bragging about??
It is to me, try traveling from south to north Florida every week for a living, that's 700 a month in gas, which is impossible to pay.
And half that distance here is the same amount of money. Your point is?
should have picked a smaller country
Yeah it's my fault I was born a US citizen because my parents lived and fucked there.
If it makes us feel any better, people in Qatar are paying 1.25USD a gallon
And half that distance here is the same amount of money. Your point is?
My point is, you think we just bitch cause gas is expensive, well most Americans get payed like shit. Half their money is put to gas and bills, hardly any money can be used for important stuff like food. No American has the money to spend 500-700 a month simply on gas for their car.
aka, can we please audit the oil companies
And half that distance here is the same amount of money. Your point is?
Different people are used to different things in different countries around the world. That's the point. Not everyone (Whether they're in the UK, Europe, or the USA) wants to spend money they don't have on gas that's expensive as hell. Can we just stop arguing about who pays more and who has to spend less? There's no reason for any of this.
Yeah it's my fault I was born a US citizen because my parents lived and fucked there.
NO, DUMMY
He means you should build a time machine out of your toaster then go back in time and ask the founding fathers to make the country a little bit smaller. Duh.

My dad spends at least a hundred dollars every week on gas for his Honda, from driving all across Hillsborough county in Florida, going hospital-to-hospital for his job. Mileage per day is often in excess of 70 miles.
In my commute to my college ten miles away, I'm slowly loosing money because I currently don't have a job. $20 a week in gas, bought from the cheapest places. I accelerate like a senile old man in order to get the most gas mileage out of my Toyota.
My point is, you think we just bitch cause gas is expensive, well most Americans get payed like shit. And my point is, 7.7 dollars per gallon is a ridiculous price that just seems all the more stupid when we hear you guys whine when it reached 3 dollars per gallon. When looking at european prices, 3.5 dollars per gallon would be a bloody god-send, and seeing you people whimper about it is nearly offensive. I do see your point more clearly now you bring your low payrates in, too, despite how everything is about 20% cheaper. Doesn't make up for 40% lower pay, or whatever it is.
And half that distance here is the same amount of money. Your point is?
One is more likely to encounter someone driving large distances in America than in Europe.
One is more likely to encounter someone driving large distances in America than in Europe.
Still doesn't explain why the European prices need to be twice as high, though. It explains why even a low price as 3.50 is a problem, but not why ours is nearing 8.
It's well up over 4 bucks a gallon here in Portland (ME), but over the state line in NH I'm told it's $3.80.
Holy fuck man, you live in Portland? Never thought I would find another FPer from Maine.

We whine cause no one in this country is putting attention in to this. Oil will soon be scarce, and gas will be impossible to get. I have to bike to the store cause my car has no gas, till I get money to put in to it, it's a sitting duck. 3.50 a gallon is the generic price, my city hit 4.00 today, I see it as 6.00 a gallon.

i dont know what "i hate america" boat you got on to because last time i checked the last "i hat america" boat set sail when communists wanted to attack capitalism in the cold war
you know whats offensive? you,r attitude towards america
if you dont like america dont live there
Good. Perhaps now we will start to use less gasoline, and learn to use it more efficiently.
Good. Perhaps now we will start to use less gasoline, and learn to use it more efficiently.
That's funny. This is just another fluctuation and will probably go back down in a couple months or so.
Still doesn't explain why the European prices need to be twice as high, though. It explains why even a low price as 3.50 is a problem, but not why ours is nearing 8.
Less need to drive long distances, less need for gas, low demand jacks up prices.
Or it could be taxes i guess. Socialism isn't free
Dear Americans. Shut the fuck up unless you're paying $7.77 per gallon. Love, Europe.
Are you forgetting that some countries in Europe are the size of fucking Connecticut?
Riller, you should know that the dollar and euro is different. Our country is running out of money, and jobs are paying less and less every year. Our country is trillions in debt and we still throw money willy nilly.
The lesson to be learned from that is that we need to improve public transit, if anything.
Not enough people per square mile to make it worth it on a national level.
We can manage maybe a large scale rail system for long distance travel, but at the end of the day we are far, FAR, too spread out for public transportation to even remotely cover the country for day to day purposes. There simply isn't enough in the way of tax dollars per area to permit the necessary upkeep.
We need superior electric cars and more nuclear/renewable energy.

Some quick wiki-reading for these numbers.
UK duty rate for the road fuels unleaded petrol, diesel, biodiesel and bioethanol is GB£0.5795 per litre (£2.63 per imperial gallon or £2.19 per U.S. gallon).
The going rate for buying GBP (last time I checked is 1.5??) giving me a price of 3.37 Dollars per gallon in tax
Meaning that we pay less for a gallon of gas in most parts of the US than someone in the UK pays in TAXES on each gallon.
I assume that money goes to health care programs and public transportation, something the US isnt much into.
