We'd have better luck with a long space gun that doesn't accelerate so fast that human bodies can't handle it, but eventually allows the ship to reach speeds necessary to enter orbit.
Maybe if instead of instantaneous application of accelerating force, we could have a device that somehow slowly applies accelerating force over a larger timeframe. Rather than expend all of the launch fuel at once for the acceleration, we can store it onboard, and utilize it slowly over time to build acceleration. We can call it...a "rocket".
55 minutes to go.

45minutes.

I'll watch this after the presentation - don't want to spoil it for myself. Currently wearing my SpaceX polo shirt.

This is amazing. I can't wait for the talk.

The solar arrays remind me of old sailing ships. Kind of Poetic that we sailed to the new world and now we sail to new worlds.
Hopefully when they get to Mars in a few years, Then they will capture some images of the surface and film from the surface. This is how Mars really look like: notice the difference.
Isn't that all part of mars/NASA conspiracy theories? The rovers have calibration color sheets to calculate white balance that they photograph every time they take images, so they can adjust for conditions. It's like people just pop the already calibrated pictures in photoshop and auto-color correct and think that's how it is supposed to look. [t]http://www.museum4kids.net/images/2004 Pix/Opportunity/1-04 Rover Sundial.jpg[/t] [t]http://www.nasa.gov/images/content/621283main_pia15284-43_946-710.jpg[/t] Dust has now covered the calibration panels, so it's no longer accurate, but they have existing color profiles to use from when the panels were clean and it was early in the mission. You get the same effect if you take a photo of a sandstorm in the middle east and auto-color correct it. Looks much less red, and more foggy but it is not accurate, since the original picture was what the color balance during the storm actually was. [t]http://s13.postimg.org/k75psb2xj/sandstorm.jpg[/t]
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solar_sail already done
Yeah I know of those. I was speaking more in regards to the look of it. It's got a hull on the bottom and sails on top. Sort of like a ship. Not just some tubular space station with symmetrical solar sails/panels around it. It's a familiar shape. Probably on purpose.
I'm curious to see Dr. Zubrin and the rest of the Mars Society have to say about this. I mean, they (along with other groups) have been cultivating, simulating and planning a manned Mars mission for ages.
189 watching.. that can't be right, YT.
About 2 mins to go.. Apparently they aren't letting people in yet.
That would make it the biggest rocket ever made, in height, and diameter.

Any second now, Musk...
The ITS video was amazing, hopefully we get to see one fly sooner rather than later.
Any second now, Musk...
We forgot to convert to Mars time.
We forgot to convert to Mars time.
You mean Musk time. It could start anywhere from right now to three or four fiscal quarters from now.
Do you have some conspiracy blogpost source to go with those nonsensical edited photos?
i'm pretty sure you could search on google by typing "mars real color" pretty cool images here's a picture notice the clouds in the sky.

funny, the music sounds a lot like this

People are being let in now so should be starting soon. [editline]27th September 2016[/editline] Stream is live!
Show's on!!! Pucker your orifices.
5-10 minutes.

Like, how does adjusting contrast make any sense? Do they mean to imply that human eyes will have less dynamic range while on the surface of Mars?
Are we going on the FP space chat group again? It's always fun to hear your guys opinions.
Darn, I've got a college class during the duration of the talk; I'll have to catch up on it after.
55,000+ viewers in 15mins.
55,000+ viewers in 15mins.
woohoo!
