When you honestly believe someone when they say that the only reason they are gathering assets and wealth is the ultimate goal of colonizing Mars you know you have someone very unique. Elon isn't lacking for support, but damn I wouldn't mind if his direction was followed by the rest of the world.
Unlike a lot of other people, Musk has mankind's best interest in mind: the survival of our species. If, as you said, other wealthy people began to back him up, it could accelerate this process by years, and likely make it better in the process.

He earned a good 300+ million between selling his shares in Zip2 and Paypal, and the first thing he does is spend virtually all of it on Two technology sectors that were considered untouchable. He put his money where his mouth is, when most would've just bought an island and got drunk off pina coladas for the rest of their life. I think most people want to do good for everyone. At the very least everyone has good intentions (though intention isn't always truly good) Elon is just a special mix of willpower, courage, and determination that makes it seem like he can do the impossible. It's easy to forget the others that he has worked with throughout his career that made it a reality. People like Steve Jurvetson (his Venture Capitalist(saved Tesla and SpaceX a few times with financial injections)), Tom Mueller (created the early Merlin engine in his garage as a hobby), JB Straubel(Tesla Electronics engineer), Franz von Holzhausen (designer of all the Tesla vehicles). and an uncountably large list of many others that made Elons dreams a reality. Elon is an extraordinary man, but he's still just one man. His best skill is inspiring people around him to move mountains for him.

While Gates is bringing the future to those where it hasn't arrived yet (like massively improving medical care in developing countries) Musk is dragging the most developed countries into an even more amazing future. I think it will take a few decades after their deaths to see who's strategy did more good, but both of them clearly care a lot about humanity as a whole.
Ideally, if we had more people like Musk, they wouldn't all be doing the same thing. Elon asked himself what would do the most good for humanity and he choose Internet, sustainable transport, and making us a multi-planetary species. Those are all really good things. But if we had 100 Musks and they were all doing that, it would be a waste of resources in my opinion. I like to think that if you ever get rich, you should ask yourself the same question. What three sectors do you think will best help humanity? If I had Musk money I'd probably focus on ocean health and sustainability, automated stacking aquaponics, and sustainable ocean-going transport. In that respect I'd be using my assets doing something that's not already being done and helping them get the support they need. I wouldn't compete with a person like Musk as much as I'd consider them my ally in the goal to make life better for everyone. In my opinion that's what business should be about.

And your avatar most definitely checks out.
If I had as much money as Musk, honestly I'd give him every penny. As rich as he is, the Mars project is a pretty huge undertaking even for someone of his wealth.
This guy gives me faith in humanity Never stop Elon
Refuel station monopoly on the solar systems sounds like an evil mastermind for the future
Refuel stations will pave the way for other space companies and endeavors. Hopefully, with this news of making fuel depots, other space companies such as the asteroid mining company Planetary Resources, will collaborate with SpaceX for a better future for humanity.
I believe you mean Planetary Resources - Space Exploration is SpaceX.
Whoops, didn't catch that, thanks. --too much SpaceX hype
was gonna say, the names were so close it'd be a pity if they weren't paired up :v:
Absolutely brilliant presentation, but that Q&A at the end was shambles, what the balls. I'd actually like to know a bit about waste recycling on the first Martian colony mission, but what you get from the audience is some twat talking about his experience running the turd gauntlet at burning man. Musk is dedicating himself to the preservation of humanity, he really should have a mandate to exterminate whomever he wants... starting with that guy.
Instead of attempting to launch the interplanetary ship off the planet, across space, and onto the other planet. Why not launch the interplanetary ship, keep it in space, maybe even partially construct it there, never have it land. Then have "local space" ships bring up/down fuel and people. Seems like it would have less chances of failure as your interplanetary ship is fucking huge and would have to handle so much, so you would off load most the stress to a smaller ship. There's no reason the interplanetary ship should have to suffer escape velocity out of the atmosphere and re-entry.
Musk just feels like what the ideal capitalist should be, always reinvesting the money and using the system to build a better future. Rather than the Koch brothers who just wanna die by smothering them selves with all their dirty oil money before they croak from old age.
watching through the live stream, something incredibly interesting is that musk says that the IPS in tanker form could theoretically do SSTO or suborbital flight that's really impressive
