finally I can play the world's smallest violin
Touchscreens already have such little tactile feedback, why do we need this? I'd rather we somehow find out how to give touchscreens that button click feeling rather then not even touching the screen.
Smartphones aren't the only application for this.

[editline]1st June 2015[/editline]
Except they make it so you have to constantly replace your phone, which is wrong in my opinion. Phones should be becoming more modular, not creating versions that will throw everything we have in the garbage.
No you don't have to, believe it or not but plenty of people do live with old phones or without mobiles at all.
But your own hand is the best tactile feedback you could ever have, it's much more accurate than a button.
When i tap a touch screen I feel that I tapped, what I don't feel is the response from the device. On a keyboard I can press a button and know which button I pressed without looking. On a phone it's much harder.

You know exactly where you tapped your own hand without looking. This is why it's better tactile feedback than what a screen could ever be. The only part of the feedback this is missing is the "button press ends" part of the button but that can be replaced because you don't need to look at your hand. On dials there is literally no difference because usually there is no way you can tell how much a dial is dialing without looking at a scale. With this you look at the device.
Sorry for the video reply but everyone here is just acting like

I can lightly press my finger against a button and I know what button I'm on without pressing it. You can't do that on a flat touch screen. I could open music player or even call someone while my button phone was in my pocket. I can't do this with a touch screen because I can't tell where to tap or if I tapped it or not.
i want this! but i'm constantly afraid of technology popping up like this and then we never hear from it again, because it doesn't ever attain critical adoption to break through to mainstream usage
Yes, but we came from miniaturisation then we realised we wanted bigger screens, higher resolution, soon we might even have 4K smartphones if we dream hard enough. And so what, humans consume by nature, it's in our history and our nature. There are much worse things we could be doing than making products and using plastics (Although I agree that material technology is another field which needs more funding and support to solve the problems that we face in modern society)
We already have LG G3 which use quadHD screens. Its really meh btw [editline]2nd June 2015[/editline]
I have no idea what you're trying to say honestly. A flat screen offers no feel.
The Future
I've generally just shrugged google's tech off because 'It's already been done' kind of thing Like ApplePay among other things Google's video is just more consumer friendly, while a proof of concept has been out for around a year already
Cool, but the problem is, there's too much disconnect between you doing something and the action happening. You can see it, but in no way can you feel it. And when you're using your hand or fingers to do something, except you can't feel anything, you get a sense of 'floaty-ness' and unresponsiveness. Like a Kinect. Touch screens are perfect, honestly. I can see this as more of a remote control to be used from across the room, maybe, but I'd rather swipe my phone physically

You don't even need to look at anything since the sense for body positioning is one of the additional senses.
I love the concept but you probably don't know the pain of accidentally grabbing a pen or pencil instead of the specially tipped tablet pen and scribbling lines all over your expensive tablet
Since the surface of the tablet won't matter as much, just clean it. Hell, could even make it solvent-friendly. Also, don't know the pain? I currently have an old Wacom from a friend of mine who dribbled JB Weld on it while putting models together. Here's a fun fact: A damp rag will NOT remove JB Weld.
