Well take it this way, I'm czech, can speak English, French and German as well as understand Slovak. Russian.. not that much, but it's still a smaller gap then between lets just say, German and English. Its totally possible for him to know all these launguages if he was doing some buisneses in Eastern Europe.

The rest of the languages are from the same "branch" so not so hard to learn to understand them if you already speak one of them. It's like saying I'm a genious cause I can understand Swedish, Danish, German and English. Including my own language Norwegian. And Im pretty sure I could learn to understand Icelandic in a short time as well seeing Icelandic is just old norse language. The languages are just similar in many ways.
