• Canada may have enough geothermal potential to power the entire country - a million times over

I always knew Canada was nothing but a bunch of hot air. [editline]26th September 2011[/editline] Kidding, I was born there. You guys are pretty cool.
Sell this energy slightly cheaper than Oil and you have yourselves a green world and Canada being filthy rich. I'm okay with this.
Sell this energy slightly cheaper than Oil and you have yourselves a green world and Canada being filthy rich. I'm okay with this.
Too bad electricity isn't oil right. [editline]27th September 2011[/editline] and even then it's rather difficult to transport electricity throughout the world
heat water at high pressure make steam at ground level turn turbines generate electricity
Isn't the geothermal heat only like 60 degrees (Fahrenheit)? Which is why it's used to heat/cool buildings.

But that's also assuming this gets off the ground without anybody being assassinated. [editline]26th September 2011[/editline]
We'll do it regardless just to prove those demigod Dyson Sphere civilizations how much we're worth.
Humans can do anything other than "not make money".
My friend lives in a geothermic heated home. But, as long as the Conservatives have a majority, nothing will happen. Thanks prairies, for giving those idiots majority.
50 years from now: This just in: Scientists have confirmed that the net temperature of the earth is decreasing. We truly are killing the planet. As global temperatures drop man is left to wonder, is there anything we haven't taken?
Too bad electricity isn't oil right. [editline]27th September 2011[/editline] and even then it's rather difficult to transport electricity throughout the world
Uh, put it in a box and ship it via courier duh!!
because it is ridiculously expensive, and what if an earthquake occurs with the strength to tear the pipes apart, you have to go down a couple kilometers in the earth and fix it, not to mention routine checkups to see how structurely intact it is.
Earthquakes are very rare and weak in most parts of Canada.
...and then Canada comes along to save our asses.
Earthquakes are very rare and weak in most parts of Canada.
You still need to send maintanence to check for damage regardless.
You still need to send maintanence to check for damage regardless.
So? Earthquakes are extremely rare and weak, so the accumulated costs of maintenance will be very small. Also, every building in the area needs to be checked if an earthquake has occured, not just geothermal power facilities.

As long as Harper is in, this will never happen.
I think I saw some movie during daytime television about some mad scientist trying to use geothermal power who ended up spilling lava into New York. What was that called? I remember in one scene some guy opens his door and lava spills out

I don't know much about geothermal energy, but my main question is is it sustainable? As in, we aren't fucking anything up by doing what geothermal energy requires? If it's sustainable, then it's a fucking travesty that it's so untapped
I get a picture of the eye of Sauron above Washington DC slowly turning from the middle east towards the north. For the most part, you need to live somewhere that already has them near the surface, which tends to be a pretty small fraction of the planet.
Um, hate to be ignorant, but isn't the "large reserve of geothermal energy" that massive magma reservoir called Yellowstone Volcano? The one that could end canada's existence should it ever erupt? Followed by blocking out the sun? Somehow drilling into that doesn't really sound like a good idea :v: woops, was wrong, these are natural reserves. I'm a tool.
you know, a while ago i heard that the chernobyl disaster would have been a whole lot worse if 2 guys didn't dive into radioactive water tanks and release the water from under the reactors, because apparently if the fuel rods ended up touching all the water they'd cause a geothermal explosion the size of like 12 atom bombs
could you at least do a minuscule amount of research before posting

Here is an interesting video I saw on a new drilling technology that will make Geothermal a better option:
Just like the millions of oil wells we already have drilled... whats the problem?
On a planet-wide scale it would be more, we can't waste money on this, by the time we have enough i'm sure fusion reactions will be stable and we can have a limitless power source forever.
Isn't the geothermal heat only like 60 degrees (Fahrenheit)? Which is why it's used to heat/cool buildings.
No, geothermal heat is as hot as you drill down, increasing about 30 degrees (celcius) per kilometer. So four kilometers and you're past boiling point. There wouldn't be any point if it was just 60 degrees F, lol.
We're already your largest supplier of oil. Canada is jam-packed with energy potential.
THE EAGLE DEMANDS MORE OF THE....uhh... maple leaf?
We're already your largest supplier of oil. Canada is jam-packed with energy potential.
woah really do you have any proof (not that i doubt that)
woah really do you have any proof (not that i doubt that)
not a source but charts are pretty [editline]27th September 2011[/editline] source http://205.254.135.24/pub/oil_gas/petroleum/data_publications/company_level_imports/current/import.html [editline]27th September 2011[/editline] note it has increased significantly since 2005
woaaah i didnt know mexico was our second largest supplier its funny because most of our oil comes from the americas
The friction of the tectonic plates moving causes a FUCKTON of heat, and they will never stop moving.
Why do I remember this movie.
