what a load freedom stealing tripe
they've started padding poles in the UK because people walk into them on the street
In the military, we can't talk or text on the cellphone while walking.
and the rest of us aren't
Human life has an infinite inherent value
Yea, but when the person is texting and walking, if they get themselves killed then it's their own fault. The government shouldn't protect people from themselves.
Three deaths is hardly an issue large enough to warrant a law.
I disagree, this law could potentially protect others from being sued if the person was injured due to walking and texting.
Wasn't there a woman who tried to sue the state because she walked into an open manhole while texting?

That's all fine and dandy, but who's gonna pay for my poor car? Hitting things like people can do serious damage.

your insurance
your insurance
Why should it be my insurance if somebody else was at fault? Who's gonna pay the higher rates that would result from this? And this is assuming I can afford insurance at all.
if it wasn't your fault your insurance won't go up.
and also you aren't allowed to drive without insurance.
Good, now all they have to do now is stop drunk walking and every fat person will be safe
if it wasn't your fault your insurance won't go up.
I don't know what kind of magic insurance you have, but the kind I have raises your rates if they have to pay anything, regardless of who was actually at fault.

Lol you said "rear-ended hard"
Was it a "sticky situation"?

no it was a painful situation that required hospitalization.

Oh...sorry
Meanwhile in New Jersey.
Thousands of US citizens have been arrested and sent to jail because they texted while they walked.
Most of these citizens resisted arrest and got tasered.
In other news:
A 12 year old child texted his mom while he walked home. His text said "I'm walking home today, please buy some food from McDonalds."
The police stopped him and putted him in handcuffs.
"How can we make more laws to infringe on people's rights!?" Texting and operating something is one thing (vehicle, etc.) walking? really?
Leave it up to the twat state of New Jersey to (continue to) be morons.
Yes if you look at article 4 amble 6 you will clearly see the constitution lays out the right to text and walk at the same time

OR (and if you bothered to think)
it's more like jaywalking. Left up to the officer's discretion and whether or not they put themselves or someone else in harm's way
[editline]14th May 2012[/editline]
in fact the tickets they'll be giving out are jaywalking tickets
The fountain lady has won
Maybe people would go back to talking to each other.
IF I ever need to text, I make sure to check crossroads to see if there's nothing coming. I can't believe these people can't just tilt their heads a bit.
Good thing the people here in central new jersey have a little bit of common sense. But I can also say that there are still a good amount of wackos here too.
Land of the free.
We are free
Free to do what uninformed morons say we can do
I managed to ride my bike while responding one handed to a text (I was in a mad hurry and the area was totally empty)
but this is stupid
Human life has an infinite inherent value
Anything that you do has a small chance of endangering someone's life. By that idea, nothing (including doing nothing) should be permitted.

How is that related, that's just protecting morons. Its not like its taking away your freedom to walk into poles, if anything its giving you more freedom to do so.
