The US held back in the middle east, infantry patrols winning hearts and minds and courageous restraint. If America went all out with civilian killings and steam rolling they might have been more successful.
There hasn't really been a proper military engagement with two equally powerful sides since the second world war. I would shudder to think at the absolute carnage that would happen if such a thing happened with today's technology.
But it won't happen here, so don't worry about it.
