How long has he had various cancers anyways?
Ok, name one person whose career was ruined because of Roger Ebert.
I'm sure those actors are crying themselves to sleep knowing that he didn't like their movie.
Kevin Smith after Red State.
I found out while working out at the gym two hours ago.
Roger Ebert was a great man and a great reviewer, and anybody that comes into this thread to make a "lol deserved it for not calling vidya "art"" joke, are horrible people.
Rest In Peace Roger.
He tore apart movies that didn't even deserve it. Think about how shitty the actors felt, the hundreds or even thousands of people that worked on it felt after reading one of his reviews where he trashes a project that was worked on for two or three or maybe even four years. Think of the directors he's discouraged, there's more than a handful out there.
If you make a movie you're going to have to expect to be criticized.
That's the point of fucking REVIEWERS.
SO YOU KNOW IF THE MOVIE IS GOOD OR NOT
Kevin Smith after Red State.
lol dude kevin smith is still making movies you dummy
if you can't handle criticism then don't get into art.
Kevin Smith after Red State.
Kevin Smith still has a career, and even if he didn't it still wouldn't be Roger Ebert's fault.

He specifically cited Roger Ebert for saying "fuck you" to the press and that he is done with film making after Clerks 3.
Red State was shot well. The dialog was great. The plot was unique. Yet Roger Ebert had to go out and say "the worst film in the history of the Cannes Film Festival".
There's a difference between a review and a trash piece.

sorry that kevin smith is such a baby then
Also I forgot to mention why Roger Ebert got all pissy with Kevin Smith, he tweeted
"Realized whole system’s upside down"
“So we let a bunch of people see it for free & they shit all over it Meanwhile, people who’d REALLY like to see the flick for free are made to pay? Bullshit: from now on, any flick I’m ever involved with, I conduct critics screenings thusly: you wanna see it early to review it? Fine: pay like you would if you saw it next week.”
Convince me that wasn't Roger Ebert targeting someone. No better than a gossip "journalist" trashing a celebrity that didn't give them what they want.

Why would he do that unless he legitimately thought it was the worst film in the history of the festival?

oh nevermind you posted a bullshit reason

kevin smith should have stopped making movies after clerks

lol i guess if unleashing a sick burn in response to a whiny rant is "getting pissy" then you'd be right
sorry that kevin smith is such a baby then
Okay well when you actually spend 3-4 years working on something and some asshole targets your project and shits all over it, you can call people "babies".
Until then, shut the fuck up.
I know how exhausting and discouraging and demeaning it is to read through comments saying that you're doing your job wrong. That your vision is flawed. That you're a worthless piece of shit and that you've just wasted 4 years of your life creating something.
This is making me sad. He shared so many of my opinions on movies and he was so warmly sarcastic. He really pulled through, wow.

you have no proof that kevin smith was targeted in any way
and even if he was, kevin's still a baby.

Well sorry, but that's the point of movie critics: to criticise. Obviously not using the words "worthless piece of shit", but considering Ebert didn't that's a kind of moot point.

if you make something, expect fucking criticism
why can't you get this through your head?
or do you think that just because you worked hard on something you deserve praise and a pat on the back?

Oh, I have no proof that Kevin Smith was targeted besides the fact that all his movies have been previously praised by the majority of critics, then all of a sudden he targets a few bad ones that TRASHED his film, he comes out with Red State after saying "pay for my movie like everyone else"
Red State gets TRASHED by nearly every critic in the industry.
Also I should mention, Roger Ebert re-reviewed the movie and gave it 3 and a half stars.

Maybe it was a bad movie.

Criticism is fine, treating people who criticize things professionally? I'm not a fan.
Criticism is fine. Trashing something for personal reasons or for the sake of being "edgy" is not fine.
Have some goddamn respect is all I'm saying.
"THIS IS THE WORST MOVIE EVER MADE AND I HOPE KEVIN SMITH NEVER MAKES ANOTHER TERRIBLE FILM EVER AGAIN" despite the actual movie being quite good in terms of acting/cinematography/writing is bullshit.
[editline]5th April 2013[/editline]
Maybe it was a bad movie.
It received 3 and a half stars by the same guy who said it was the "WORST MOVIE IN THE HISTORY OF CANNES"
Shut up.

What would he stand to gain from giving dishonest reviews? Other than a severance package?
Good riddance Roger Ebert, you fat miserable cunt.
You criticized movies mercilessly when you couldn't even make a good film yourself.
Ask him. Oh wait, he's fucking dead.
Ask him. Oh wait, he's fucking dead.
Well if you can't think of a motive for the grand red state conspiracy, then I guess we'll just have to throw that idea away.
Well if you can't think of a motive for the grand red state conspiracy, then I guess we'll just have to throw that idea away.
I already gave a motive. Roger Ebert threw a fit over Kevin Smith forcing critics to pay like everyone else. He trashed it. The public demanded a re-review, it got a 3 1/2 out of 5 stars.
Doesn't sound too bad for the "WORST MOVIE IN THE HISTORY OF CANNES" does it?

lol roger ebert didn't throw a fit, this is what he had to say about kevin smith's 5-year old level rant:
Kevin Smith thinks critics should have had to pay to see "Cop Out." But Kev, then they would REALLY have hated it.
Well I think that clears that up.
roger ebert didn't even review red state

Conveniently Red State was the first movie to come out after Cop Out and after Kevin Smith said "you guys pay for the movie like the rest of everyone else"
Uh yes he did, he called it the worst film to ever be shown at Cannes and when it was re-reviewed, it was given a 3.5 out of 5 stars
I'm done arguing with you. Facepunch has shown itself to be pretty fucking retarded when it comes to arguments and debates in the past so I'm not going to further waste my time.
