The bill, called the “municipal communications network and private telecommunications investment safeguards act,” has as its stated goals to: Ensure that video, telecommunications and broadband services are provided through fair competition … in order to provide the widest possible diversity of sources of information, news and entertainment to the general public Encourage the development and widespread use of technological advances in providing video, telecommunications and broadband services at competitive rates Ensure that video, telecommunications and broadband services are each provided within a consistent, comprehensive and nondiscriminatory federal, state and local government framework
ah yes because all of the local isps sure are doing that right right?????
Ironically (regarding your comment), this is an issue because it's government intervention in the market. Not a fault with capitalism, and the market is obviously not a free market if things like this can happen.
(sarcasm)
“Fascism should more appropriately be called Corporatism because it is a merger of state and corporate power” - Benito Mussolini This is why^ enjoy yer freedoms. also, what is the diffrience between normal fiber and google fiber?
I read the bill and I actually don't see anything directly bad about it. It doesnt ban google fiber, it bans coupling an ISP (google in this case) too tightly in with the local government which is not really a bad thing imho.
They just want to be able to keep doing as they always have, reluctant to change.

This has as much to do with the government as it does the corporations. If the government didn't have the power to make decisions of this nature, then corporations would have no ability to use the government in such a way.

Seems like Google's not in Kansas anymore.
Hopefully this will never be made into law. So goddamn relevant: --video--
It's funny how there's a word "oligopoly", and then there's a definition "cartel". I'm pretty sure it's something illegal. Absolutely illegal. Everywhere. You know how everyone's used to laugh at Russian legislature and law and whatnot, but hell, if our cable companies try to do anything like that even in any fairly developed town, they would get absolutely fucked in the ass by Federal Antimonopoly Service. The state is the only one allowed to fuck with internet companies. There're large cable providers that sometimes try to pull local governments on their side of the deal in trying to constitute monopoly, but that just doesn't happen. It's fucked up, how can it be that bad in USA. Weren't you guys big in antimonopoly stuff?
Because the only politicians who can afford to run are those backed by the corporations.
That's caused by political funding regulation though. The government has made it impossible to be funded by personal donors.

Corporate interest ensures that it's usually practiced if it's to their benefit.
We're paying $200/m for Telstra 100gb internet + Foxtel + Homephone
For a second I thought you meant 100Gb as a speed, but then realised you have a 100GB limit. How the fuck are US ISPs getting away with still having data caps? That's retarded.

That's retarded.
Fruxodaily is Australian, he just has a US post icon for some reason. But yeah I don't know how Telstra gets away with it. The only good thing I've heard that Telstra does is its customer service, but I can't say for sure because I've never been with them. Because they are rip-offs.
The question becomes who backed those politicians that ended up sponsoring the laws or voting for them?
the real question is why was a bill allowed to be introduced without any sponsors on it
The other ISP are already sucking the governments dick to allow their "legal monopoly"
The thing is google isn't just sucking the governments dick in this case, it's rearing its ass and letting itself be plunged. This bill kinda says, the most you can do is suck, nothing more.
