if the character has a good reason for being iron (wo)man and its actually a good continuation then who cares
but i wish they made a new hero with her rather than replacing a original marvel hero. can you imagine the backlash if a white woman played black panther
Call her Snow Bunny
wow, i can't tell if this is a real comic or horribly written author-insert fanart from tumblr
was someone actually paid to write this horrible dialogue?
The writer is some half bit author who is being paid too much and the the illustrator did the art work for Bee and Puppycat. Hellcat and Squirrel Girl are the twin posterchildren for the stuff Marvel isn't getting quite right, in both the artwork and writing categories.
Seems like more catering to people that don't even read comics.
Quoted from a friend:
I feel as if the empowering message of a young impoverished black girl making her way through college would work better if she didn't just try and copy the white guy's stuff.
What a surprise
Another strong black woman with a silly..sorry..cultural hairstyle
Whoever saw this coming
haha i get it
Iron Man is Fe male
I'm not huge into comics but isn't it a pretty common thing for comic books to have another person take on the mantle of a character? As long as they're still likeable and it doesn't turn into a shitfest where they go on about mansplaining (see previously posted wonder woman comic) it seems fine to me
My guess to the reason(s) why they're doing this all willy nilly is that they're so unsure the new characters would sell enough being a unique IP that they have to ride off of the popularity of pre-established characters to give these new comics any chance of selling even in passable numbers. Because rather then rely on good story and having characters that are complex and well written and not flat pandering self-inserts, they can rely on brand recognition to sell comics.
In short, making unique IP's is too difficult and high risk for the current people at Marvel to be comfortable with.
Something always bugs me about these kinds of announcements. Makes it feel like it's progressive purely for the sake of pandering
I'm fine with the character, I guess
Instead of making Iron Man a black woman, they should have kept him as a white man, but hes very autistic and has his high intellect exploited by his family for fortune and he only became a super hero because his power suit protects him from the outside world and gives him the confidence to go outside.
Then they'd have a type of superhero and commentary nobody has ever done before
I bought the first issue of Civil War II, now that I've read this I'm regretting giving Marvel my money, rip $9 I guess.
Marvel ought to take a page from DC's book.
They put Wesley Willis into DC as a super hero with all-sight (which hurts him if he uses it), power over flies and is technically Wonder Woman's half brother. No trying to fit a mantle, no overtly convenient backstory that makes him a carbon copy of another hero, it's literally Wesley as a super hero and it's great representation.

Simply "filling the boots" is just a cheap business tactic that fails more than it works. More original characters are better than just swapping the person who wears the suit and always will be.
Holy shit, I need to read that comic asap.
One more point, if your hero wears form fitting metal suits with lots of moving parts, hoop earrings and afros are pretty dumb. The character should have short hair because they're putting themselves in armor all the time
It just always irks me, astronauts keep short hair usually
What bothers me about these sort of situations is that they can fill whatever marks they are trying to hit with a new character, but instead seem to hinge on the success of an older character's name and title. Sam Wilson and Laura Kinney becoming [black] Captain America and [female] Wolverine, respectively; for instance, is less contrived than a brand new character assuming the title because of the author's willing it to be so. Reason being, they're established and they earn the mantle they now bear. Furthermore, the changes wouldn't be so bad if the writers themselves didn't make an effort to point it out so much. Their changes come across more political than dramatic or entertaining.
I'd think as a writer, they would jump at the chance to define new characters rather than living in an older character's shadow.
Why black? Why not asian?

Also, what that guy above me said.
This is so fucking stupid.
Serious suggestion if anyones looking to get into mainstream comics, go DC. They dont pull this shit.

They do, just to a lesser degree and they don't use it as a selling point as much.
That being said, I'm quite curious about the comics industry and what it actually takes to get an original character printed.

Filled in by Amadeus Cho as Hulk.
Though, the more tinfoil reason is to make sure no one reads it as "Asian kid conforms to nerdy tech role" stereotype.
They do, just to a lesser degree and they don't use it as a selling point as much.
Not really.
At the very least, when they do, they dont do it to look hip and cool and randomly replace a big name. Like, whatshisface, Duke Thomas? The black dude in Batman Rebirth? He's not replacing Batman or Robin, he's gonna be his own dude. Cyborg went from Teen Titan to Justice Leaguer. All of the Green Lanterns coexist because its inherently a corps. of dudes.
Wally West [black] and Wally West [white] both coexist now.

But how are we supposed to appreciate how black she is if she doesn't dress as ethnic as possible?

It's not sustainable. Gimmicks provide a boost in readership for a very short period of time but tend to result in a long-term loss if the readers aren't satisfied. And arbitrarily replacing characters is a very good way of ensuring that will happen.
Modern Marvel is honestly a pretty big fucking disgrace with only a handful of good or even passable comics. Its evident that editorial is clearly forcing stupid bullshit to squeeze out as much money as possible. All they've done for the past 3 or so years is drum up outrage and anger from their fans in an attempt to get them to buy more comics from bile fascination, killing off or replacing established heroes and replacing them with minorities of some kind, which they then spin as being hip, cool, and sure to anger those dang dirty racist sexists, and even when its not, its still poorly thought out and makes little sense.
Jane Foster as Thor? Doesnt make a lick of sense at all, she's worthy because... Cancer i guess? Dont get me started on the awful writing.
Falcon as Captain America? Sure, he has decades of history with Cap, and while taking up the mantle may make some sense from that point if view, you're sacrifice the history he has as his own superhero so he can take up the mantle of another one. Especially when he's still Falcon, he's just got a Red, White, and Blue color scheme now.
Miles as Spider-Man? In the context of the Ultimate Universe, cool, it works, they brought him over to 616 and have him be in the traditional Spidey status quo, so Peter Parker can actually have some sort of growth. Sure, that works.
X-23 as Wolverine? Again, it works, related closely to Wolverine, always associated because clone, Wolverine died, she takes up mantle, it makes sense.
Then you got shit like this, making Iceman from X-Men gay despite his previous like, 4 decades of womanizing (dont forget insinuating bisexuals dont exist by having Jean Grey call him "full gay"), their attempts to drum up anger sales by saying the same crowd who hated Jane would hate Amadeus as Hulk, rehashing the Civil War idea just to coincide with the movie, completely butchering the Cosmic universe, and bloating the main universe with alternate universe runaways. Dont forget how they're going to relaunch every book annually so they can get those sweet sweet #1 sales boosts even though time has shown that doing this is leading to diminishing returns.
Tom Brevoort, Axel Alonso, Ike Perlmutter, Brian Michael Fucking Bendis, they're all killing this company and i just cant stand it anymore.

[editline]6th July 2016[/editline]
Add onto that, what Brevoort said isnt even true, DC's been kicking their ass in sales if im not mistaken, and blew them out of the water with DC Rebirth (DC Rebirth #1 and Batman Rebirth #1 are still in the top 10 sales wise despite coming out like a month and a half ago)
I can't wait until people realize how silly it is to pander towards audiences who don't necessarily even read your comics and just continue making neat things without needing the urge to tick enough boxes when designing characters or rebooting them for no reason
if this is pandering doesn't that mean the original iron man was also pandering, just to rich white men instead

Ironman is supposed to be smart and rich right? :v:

Yeah I agree that it's very short-sighted of them to constantly rely on gimmicks like the one posted in the OP to boost or at least sustain readership. They aren't thinking of the long term effects these gimmicks will have on their overall sales numbers.
if this is pandering doesn't that mean the original iron man was also pandering, just to rich white men instead
No.

Does anyone else see it as really fucking patronizing to make the reintroduced female/minority characters objectively better than their original counterparts? As if the writer felt the need to show that a female/minority can be better than a male/white person just to unnecessarily counter stereotypes? Which only causes the lack of personality similar to a stereotype to end up defining the character because the writer is walking on egg shells trying not to portray them in a bad light. It's retarded.
Hahahahahahaha.
How the hell is she going to fit all that bushy hair in an Iron helmet?
Well this is fucking stupid
Not really. Marvel heroes die and are replaced by others on a fairly regular basis. Having a new Iron Man/Woman isn't so bad.

No, its stupid. Just because Marvel does stupid shit a lot doesnt make it not stupid.
